Native Gmail app rumored to make an appearance on
iOS

GmailEver since the iPhone was introduced back in 2007, there hasn’t been a native Gmail app for iOS devices. Sure you can configure the default email client or access it from Safari, but it didn’t provide the same experience like the official Gmail app for Android does. But it looks like we’ll be finally getting the app on iOS. According to rumors online Google has already submitted the app for review so if it gets approved by Apple, we should see it on the App Store soon.

The official Gmail app could bring features like push notifications, one-click starring of messages, Priority Inbox, deep searching functionality, improved threading and more ? the features that we’ve come to know and love using Gmail for. No word of when we’ll be seeing the app, but we’ll be sure to let you know when it launches.

Display companies fined for price fixing

South Korea has fined 10 LCD manufacturers for price fixing, or consorting to artificially increase price of their goods. This usually works by agreeing on an artificial floor price, thus nullifying the normal market forces that tends to push LCD prices lower (because the competition is supposedly so ferocious). This worked because between them, all 10 companies held about 80% of the LCD market.

CPU Overclocking Record Broken, But

andre-yang

The AMD FX-8150 was recently used to break a world record in terms of overcloking, but Andre Yang has gone beyond the previous record (8.429GHz) by reaching 8.46151GHz, however he did so by disabling 6 of the 8 cores in order to lower the overall temperature. Depending on how you look at it, this is either smart  or cheating. At the very least, we would say that the results can’t really be compared. On the other hand, maybe the world record was just about GHz…

In any case, this is merely an exercise which won’t be useful for most people as it requires special cooling using liquid gas etc. I even wonder if such feats are really influencing hardcore modders who will care more about actual real-world performance. In any case, this is sure going to spark some controversy over whether or not the record was actually broken. What do you think?

Nokia Lumia 800 unboxed

Nokia Lumia 800 boxWe’re going to have to wait until 2012 before we can get our hands on Nokia’s first Windows Phone device, the Lumia 800. And to give us a taste of things to come, the folks over at the official Windows Phone blog posted an unboxing photo gallery showing us what we can expect once we get the wrapping taken off the box.

Judging by the photographs, we get a simple, minimalist box that’s not too complicated or full of unnecessary stuff. We get the phone, the documents in an envelope, a protective sleeve, charger/data cable, power plug and a pair of headphones. While this is far from actually having the phone, it’s a lot better than nothing at all. Let’s hope Nokia sticks with its ‘early 2012′ schedule. Check out more photographs at the source link.

Google Wallet demonstrations coming to a city
near you

Google WalletIf you’ve been reading this tech blog, I’m pretty sure you would heard of Google Wallet by now but most of you probably have yet to experience using it. After all, it’s only for the Sprint Samsung Nexus S at the moment, which means there aren’t a lot of people with Google Wallets. But if you’re keen on giving it a shot to see what the fuss is all about, Google will be hosting Google Wallet trial runs in states across the country.

From October until December, Google will be travelling to various merchant locations in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles for half-day events to give demonstrations with Google Wallet. In fact you’ll even get $10 towards your purchase when you tap and pay using one of the Samsung Nexus S demo phones. Sounds like a great way to introduce the service to the masses. Check out the full tour schedule over at the source link.

Google now lets you block targeted ads

Google adsIf you’ve always wondered about why certain ads get displayed on your screen whenever you’re performing a Google search you’re in luck. Google has recently decided to be more transparent about its ad targeting services and now gives users a way to find out why a specific ad is being shown to them. Mac Pro: Could Apple Kill It

mac pro

Rumors are swirling about the possible death of the Mac Pro, the desktop Mac that is not really getting a lot of love from the buyers, or from Apple itself if you think about it. It is the line that is the slowest to receive updates, and when they do, it’s not all that exciting anyway.  The reason is simple: most of Apple computer sales  are made of laptops, then iMacs probably come in second leaving the Mac pro a distant third.

While this may be true, the Mac Pro business is supposedly still growing and setting new records, just at a much slower pace than its portable counterparts, so can Apple kill the Mac pro to focus on other computers? It “can” because the only ones who would really care are the professional types who use it to handle design on huge files etc. In my opinion, even the semi-pro or small business designer can work on an iMac now, but if your company depends on the Mac Pro because you require a ton of memory or a huge graphics card, life may suck soon.

In the end, things could go both ways. Apple can certainly afford to keep this line, but it would benefit greatly from removing it as it can focus relatively scarce human resources to other, more juicy, products. How would you feel if the Mac Pro was going to the grave?

Shadowgun works with a PS3 controller on a Galaxy
S2 [hack]

SHADOWGUNWe’ve previously seen Shadowgun played on a “TV console” thanks to the help of an Acer Iconia tablet and an Xbox 360 controller, and now some folks have managed take it up a notch by making it run on a Samsung Galaxy S2 (Shadowgun is designed for Tegra devices) with a PlayStation 3 controller wirelessly over Bluetooth. Obviously root access is needed to get it to work, but judging by the demonstration video ? the game runs very well on the Galaxy S2 as well. The PS3 controller is a bit buggy over Bluetooth (it sends extra keystrokes for some reason) but it’s something that you can get used to.
