Could cellphones cause cancer

There has been a debate going on for the longest time already, where certain quarters claim that cellphones (and smartphones, of course) could be involved in the rise of cancer cases, since they might just be as carcinogenic as the pesticide DDT or gasoline engine exhaust – and that is the stand that the World Health Organization panel took after reviewing dozens of published studies.

“Limited” scientific evidence points to the radiofrequency energy that is released by cellphones being involved in an increased risk of glioma and acoustic neuroma (which are both cancers). The findings are not definitive, but it really depends on which side of the divide you stand on.

Doom is now playable on your web browser

Doom browser

Fans of the first person shooter that revolutionized the gaming industry, Doom, will be please to know that they can still play the game on their current computers. And they won’t have to worry about running DOS emulators or getting Windows to work in compatibility modes: a developer named Alon Zakai has managed to port the game over to the web browser.

The game’s source code was compiled to JavaScript from C using Emscripten and Clang and optimized with Closure Compiler. If you’d like to find out more about the technical details etc, just head over to the project’s web page and you can get the source code from here. If you have no interest in finding out what happened behind the scenes, you can just play the game right here. It requires Firefox or Safari to run though.

With games like Doom now playable on the browser, I wonder what other games will make the transition in the future?

Facebook for Android looking for beta testers
(updated)

Facebook logoUsers of the official Facebook app for Android will know that the app isn’t exactly the best Facebook experience you can get on a mobile device. Half the time, surfing the mobile version of the website on a web browser is usually better than with the official app. Fortunately Facebook isn’t just leaving the app alone and are working on improving it.

They’ve just announced that they will be offering a private beta version of the Facebook 1.6 app to participants who are willing to play guinea pigs to the new app. Facebook 1.6 for Android brings new features such as the ability to like comments, Pages support, video uploads, and tons of bug fixes. Hopefully it also increases the overall speed of the app which is pretty slow in comparison to third party apps like Friendcaster.

If you’re interested in signing up for the beta, fill up this questionnaire and you might be one of the chosen ones to take part in the beta test. If you do get into the beta test, let us know whether the new version is a major improvement over the current one.

Update (18.44 PT): as of now, it seems like the form has been closed. We’ll keep you posted if a new beta signup appears again.

T-Mobile Will Ride HSPA+ to 672Mbps. Possibly
Beyond

hspa-evolution

At a time when 4G LTE is gaining mindshare, T-Mobile will continue to invest and evolve HSPA+ (T-Mobile calls it ?4G? too), an incumbent wireless standard that T-Mobile thinks can provide users with the speed they need, in a more cost-effective way. We met with Katherine Barnes in San Diego. She is the Director of T-Mobile?s Product Realization group, and the slide above is part of a larger PowerPoint presentation about T-Mobile. However,  this HSPA+ portion caught my attention.

Vitra Chairless

Chairless is a seating device for the modern nomad. This sturdy strap of fabric allows its user to sit down in a relaxed manner ? but with neither seat nor backrest. It is thus a solution par excellence for times when chairs are in short supply: lunch in the park, while waiting in a crowded airport, a picnic on the lawn, sitting down at a concert, reading on the beach and on countless other occasions. Chairless is so light and compact that you can carry it with you wherever you go. I love it.

Corsair Obsidian 650D Computer Case

The Obsidian 650D is Corsairs second attempt at a mid-tower case and the third case in the Obsidian line that started with the 800D almost two years ago. The 650D was created in response to the two biggest complaints about the 800D, which were price and size. Priced at $199 and now in a mid-tower design both issues have been addressed. At the same time the 650D has retained many of the same great features and aesthetics that made the Obsidian 800D so popular. While evaluating the Obsidian 650D Benchmark Reviews will see if it is worth of the Obsidian moniker it has inherited or if many of the features its older brother had have been lost in the transition to a smaller size.
