TDK Boomboxes to bring you back to the 80s

TDK Boombox

If you were a kid growing up in the late 70s and 80s, you would have been part of the boombox generation, and probably owned one or two yourself. Well boomboxes aren’t too common anymore, due to the fact that people stopped listening to cassettes and blasting music out in public is considered more of a nuisance than anything. Well TDK has plans to bring you back into that era with their upcoming Boomboxes. Coming in 2 speaker and 3 speaker variants, TDK’s new Boomboxes have been designed to look retro as well as provide warm and vibrant music, just like how it was delivered back then. But instead of reading cassette tapes, these music players will play your music from USB drives, and MP3 players and iPhones with its built-in auxiliary ports. There’s even a port for musicians to plug in their guitars or microphones in the event that they would like to kick out the jams on the streets. No prices have been announced for the Boomboxes, but you can expect them to go on sale this April.

Amazon might be introducing mobile phone payment
system

Amazon logoAmazon has been reported as exploring the possibility of starting a new mobile payment system that makes use of near field communication (NFC) technology. While this tip off comes from folks who do not wish to be named (due to confidentiality reasons), it doesn’t seem too farfetched at all. NFC usage is growing in the country and many other companies have been reported to be experimenting with the technology as well, it makes sense that Amazon would be looking to take advantage of it as well ? after all they are one of the largest online merchants around. If Amazon does introduce an NFC payment system, it will be within the next 3 to 5 months. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted.

Kinect Games By Rare Only Using 10-15% of Its
Power

Microsoft Kinect

After winning a BAFTA award for Kinect Sports, Rare, developers of the Banjo Kazooie and and Perfect Dark video game franchises, and most recently the masterminds of the Xbox 360‘s Avatars and Kinect unveiled that they are only tapping 10-15% of Kinect’s technical abilities. This is a most interesting tidbit because Kinect, although still in its infancy has yet to get any hardcore games that aren’t targeted at the casual gamer. Imagine what kind of games we’d be playing if developers pushed Kinect to use 50 or even 80% of its potential. We want to see games like Call of Duty with Kinect integration while using a standard game controller pad. If Rare says the potential is “virtually limitless” then where are the games to back up that claim? Show us games that really take full advantage of Kinect. If this June’s E3 comes and goes without so much as a hardcore Kinect game that really shows off what the camera sensor is capable of, we’ll be greatly disappointed. Look at Sony and its Move combo in SOCOM 4 – it’s not kidding around.

Adobe Acrobat phishing scam surfaces again

Adobe Acrobat Reader phishing scamCloudmark, a security provider has just posted about a new phishing scam trying to pass off as an Adobe Acrobat website. It arrives in the form of an email telling users to upgrade their version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to the full version of Adobe Acrobat. When they click on the link in the email, it brings them to a site with the name “adobe” in the domain name, giving it some “credibility”. There on the site, users are asked to provide personal information such as their contact details and credit card information. While the scam has surfaced previously in the past, each time it comes forward, it claims some new victims, and usually those few victims are enough for the scammers to make a profit. There’s nothing that users can do about it, except to be wary of the sort of links they click and sites they visit, and an upgrade to a browser that has anti-phishing features wouldn’t hurt. Adobe has even alerted users about such scams before, so you can read their blog for more details.

Ford starts building digital children crash
dummies

Ford logoFord announced that they have officially started work on building a digital human child, complete with its internal organs, skeleton structure and brain, all in the name of safety research. Car safety testing has been going on for years now, with the use of adult crash test dummies, which is fine when testing a car’s safety towards adults, but we all know that adults aren’t the only ones in cars all the time ? there’s children too. And while adult dummies can give relevant feedback about how a crash affects an adult, it’s not going to have the same impact on a child. And with the new digital child crash dummy, Ford hopes to find out how things differ, and what they can do to make things better. Since data about children isn’t as readily available as it is for adults, Ford will be working with Tianjin University of Science and Technology that works with Tianjin Children’s Hospital to get information about human kids. Ford will be basing their model on data obtained from MRIs, and CAT scans provided by volunteers. With these models, more accurate testing can be done and hopefully in the future, cars will be as safe as they are for kids as they are for adults.
