Skype for Android hacked, does video on other
Android handsets

Skype for Android’s latest release apparently supports only a bunch of other handsets – the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro and the Google Nexus S. Trust the ever enterprising spirit of mankind to hack said version to include video call support on all the other non-listed Android-powered smartphones. The particular version that we’re referring to was released with the Samsung Galaxy S2 in mind, although the performance will not be limited to just that particular smartphone. While it remains too early to perform exhaustive testing for other models, the APK (installation file for Android phones) has been touted to work on the HTC EVO 4G, alongside the HTC Thunderbolt with some measure of success.

Needless to say, only if your Android-powered smartphone has a front facing camera should you bother yourself with this version of Skype, and make sure that there is a decent processor hiding underneath the hood as well.

HTC Eternity has a 4.7-inch display and 1.5GHz
processor

Just when you figured out that the Samsung Infuse 4G with its 4.5″ display was more than what your eyes could take, or at least, is the epitome in displays on a Windows Phone 7-powered smartphone, along comes the HTC Eternity that reportedly packs an even larger display – we are looking at (pun not intended) at a 4.7″ Super LCD display at 480 x 800 resolution, with additional rumors swirling around, pointing towards a single-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, an 8-megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 720p video capture ability, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, up to 16GB of internal memory, 512MB RAM, 14.4Mbps HSPA support, 1650mAh battery and Windows Phone 7 Mango as the operating system of choice.

No idea on whether HTC Eternity is ever going to make it Stateside – hopefully, it won’t live up to its namesake and take an eternity to. While the Eternity’s display isn’t the largest out there as it is eclipsed by the Acer Iconia Smart’s 4.8″ display, that doesn’t mean the Eternity is anything to laugh at. What do you think is the sweet spot for a smartphone display?

Opera updates two Android mobile browsers

Opera has not one, but two mobile browsers for Android-powered device owners to choose from, so it is nice to know that Opera decided to roll out upgrades for both – notching the version numbers to Opera Mini 6.1 and Opera Mobile 11.1. They are both ready for action over at the Android Market, with support for Google voice search thrown in alongside Google AutoComplete and Intelligent domain suggest. Those ought to make your search process faster, including when entering a URL, while providing alternative sites to check out just in case you were bored of flipping channels, deciding to surf random websites instead.

Opera Mobile 11.1 will throw in additional features that the company dubs “experimental support” for Adobe Flash on tablets running Android 3.x Honeycomb. Apart from that, expect to find support for HTML5, with the rendering engine given a bump to Opera Presto 2.8.149.

Sprint Galaxy Tab to receive Android 2.3
Gingerbread update

The original Samsung Galaxy Tab was meant to be an iPad killer, but unfortunately, it must have gotten its identity and purpose mixed up along the way because it was nowhere near such status after arriving on the market. Well, considering the larger Galaxy Tab 10.1 has already been released, surely there is quite a number of original Galaxy Tab owners who have made the upgrade switch. For those who have remained blindly loyal, here’s some good news – your Sprint Galaxy Tab will be receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update very soon, where it will be known as build number EF17, sporting HD Bluetooth support as well.

Touted to arrive this coming July 5th, the update will be made available via Google OTA (Over The Air). This update will be spread out across a 4-day period for those who are eligible Sprint customers, based on your status with the Google servers. We would have liked to see a direct download link as well too, but beggars can’t be choosers, no?

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac 2.1 gets
PlayBook support

Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind the BlackBerry, has just announced that their latest BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac which is in version 2.1, will now be able to support PlayBooks when it comes to media synchronization. Previously, you were able to copy files over to the PlayBook over USB or Wi-Fi from a Mac, but with this new version, you can rely on Desktop Manager directly to synchronize the entire bunch of music, photos, and videos with iTunes and iPhoto over USB.

Among the changes found in the change log include Tablet Support, where you are able to “Sync and import your media files with the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet”, in addition to general fixes and improvements to features. Can’t wait? Why not point your browser here and pick up the new version?

crop up

Don’t you just hate it whenever you send your car to the mechanic to have him fix up a particular problem, that driving home after that, you discover another issue has risen? That’s more or less the case with the HTC EVO 4G, having received an update from Sprint which fixed the Netflix and other issues, although said update has caused frustration to users of voice search and Vlingo Virtual Assistant. Problems plaguing various software and issues that arrive with the recent Gingerbread 2.3.3 Software (version 4.24.651.1) update for the HTC EVO 4G will encompass the following – Vlingo Virtual Assistant, Stock RSS widget, voice search, Google Voice-to-text, random apps reloading, issues, compass, Yahoo email and broken folder links.

Solar Cross electric bicycle

Getting around on a bicycle is already a green and healthy pursuit, but how do you make it greener? You can’t actually, but you can add more oomph to a bicycle with the help of an electric engine so that you can tackle those killer uphill slopes without breaking too much of a sweat. Terry Hope, a Canadian inventor has come up with the Solar Cross electric bicycle, receiving its juice from the sun (obviously) as well as the rider’s hard work.

Using a stock 18-speed Specialized FSR mountain bike, Hope mounted a couple of solar panels over the front wheel, while a 24-volt 1-horsepower motor, a 5000 mah (milli Ampere hour) lithium-ion polymer (LIPO) main battery, two 5000 mah LIPO booster packs wired in series, and a 24-volt controller are also packed into its body.

Another Sharp Galapagos tablet goes through the
FCC

Sharp has sent yet another Galapagos tablet over to the FCC for them to prod and poke the device, making sure it is worthy and ready to hit the US market when the time is ripe to do so. This Galapagos tablet is also known as the EB-W71LJ-H if you happen to have a fetish for model numbers, and if one were to look at Sharp’s naming convention to date, it would most probably come with a 7″ display, making it the ideal go-between model as there are already 5″ and 10″ models from the Galapagos line which we already know.

Test results have also revealed the presence of a 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi radio, but apart from that, other details are as scant as hair on Kojak’s noggin’. This is because Sharp specifically put in a request to the FCC to keep their trade secrets under lock and key – for now. Perhaps sometime down the road, additional details will be revealed, but for now, you just have to sit tight and wait for a leak or an official announcement.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 receives FCC approval

One of the reasons the HTC Flyer comes in a 7″ form factor is because HTC wanted it to be small enough to hold in one hand without inducing any cramps in the long run, not to mention slipping the Flyer into your jacket pocket in a jiffy. Well, 10″ tablets are nice to look at, but try carrying it with just one hand all day long? Samsung explores the middle ground between the two with their Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 which has just passed FCC testing, where it is known as the A3L-GTP7300, sporting a 3G emblem to boot.

Initial reports of this tablet tout the Galaxy Tab 8.9 to ship with Android 3.X Honeycomb right out of the box, accompanied by a Tegra 2 dual-core processor, an 8.9″ display at 1280 × 900 resolution, 1GB RAM, a 3-megapixel rear camera alongside a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and a choice of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities.

Google+, kindly meet privacy issues

There’s a snafu with the recently released Google+, where potential problems have already been spotted concerning the issue of privacy. Google’s latest attempt at social networking allows you to categorize people you know into different circles, letting you share with friends what you do not want your family to know – however, there is a feature which allows you to reshare what someone else has posted. Logically speaking, the resharing ability allows the original post to go beyond the “circle of trust”, as Gaylord Focker would put it.

The loophole was first spotted by the eagle eyed folks over at the Financial Times, but it is nice to know that such a loophole was discovered so early into the game, considering Google+ is still in limited trial, with users finding some rough edges in the process.

Google stated that “we’re actively listening to feedback from our testers. Prior to launching the product, we may make adjustments to the system in response to this feedback.”
