Sony store strategy is paying off

Phil Molyneux

Phil Molyneux

We had an opportunity to talk to Phil Molyneux (President and Chief Operating Officer, Sony Electronics Inc) in San Francisco, and we discussed about Sony’s efforts to change its overall user experience, including the store experience. As Phil Molyneux would put it, the Sony stores have to be the “Wonderland of Sony” that are not only there to provide a wonderful taste of Sony’s products, but they should also be a place where people buy products, come back to learn how to “get more” from them, and eventually get great support if needed.

With that in mind, Sony has remodeled a few stores (last Spring) and worked hard to refine this new model.  Almost 6 months later, the investment is starting to generate solid dividends and Sony is ready to expand the concept. (more…)

New Google barJust when we were getting used to the black horizontal bar on top of all our Google services, it looks like the company has something new in store for us. Today on the Official Google Blog, they announced that they will be rolling out a brand new Google bar across all their services. Instead of having a black bar that takes up valuable screen real estate, they’ve decided to get rid of it.

Photo retouch rating system tells you how much a
photo has been shopped

Photo retouchIt’s common knowledge that almost all photographs of celebrities you see in magazines have been edited in one way or another. From minor retouches like the removal of wrinkles and blemishes all the way to the emphasis on various body parts ? but we’ll never know how much retouching has been done unless we’ve seen the original image or we’re the ones doing it in the first place. Well, a bunch of researchers at New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College have proposed a new system to solve the problem.

Kindle Fire gets Cyanogen Mod 7

Kindle Fire CM7Cyanogen Mod 7 (CM) is one of the most popular Android custom ROMs around and it’s available on a large number of devices ? both phones and tablets. Well, if you own an Amazon Kindle Fire we’ve got some good news for you ? the device has recently been added to the list of devices that support CM7. As usual, the CM7 build is still in its early stages, but if you’re not a fan of the Amazon UI that’s plastered over the Kindle Fire and you want an enhanced version of regular Android Gingerbread ? this custom ROM is for you.

At the moment, quite a number of features aren’t working properly i.e. touchscreen, and you’ll lose your integrated Amazon features if you install the ROM, but important features like WiFi are available, which should make the tablet pretty usable. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to give your Kindle Fire a makeover, head over to XDA-developers for more details. Remember to back up your tablet  before attempting anything risky, and make sure you know what you’re doing beforehand.

Microsoft working on iPad version of Office

There are whispers going around that the software giant known as Microsoft will be working on an iPad version of their Office productivity software. This makes perfect sense if it is true, considering how the iPad currently captures around 80% of the tablet market, and with so many millions of office drones out there who own an iPad or the iPad 2, they too, use Microsoft Office – translating to a potential windfall for Microsoft in the long run if it is executed properly. It is also a somewhat similar situation as that of Microsoft making money off each Android handset sold, never mind that their Windows Phone devices are not exactly the best selling handsets around. Samsung Wave 3 smartphone announced

Samsung’s range of Galaxy S2 smartphones might be the biggest seller for them at the moment simply for the fact that they’re pretty much solid pieces of hardware that run just fine, but that does not mean they do not have other interests lying around. Having announced the commercial availability of their flagship 4? Wave 3 smartphone, this handset will be released in France first, followed by Germany, Italy, Russia and other global markets later this year. Continuing in the heritage of the Wave series in terms of style, the Samsung Wave 3 will come with a unique 9.9mm full metal case made out of anodized brushed aluminum. (more…)
