Motorola Droid HD spotted

Is there a new Motorola Droid model that we are not aware of? Perhaps, if this leaked Flickr photo is anything to go by. As you can see above, the image says, “..using a motorola (sic) DROID HD”. Some might discount this to be a prankster who was just messing around with EXIF tags, but going through other photos from the same Flickr user also showed that several images posted were shot using the DROID 3. Not only that, all of the photos were geo-tagged from within Motorola?s offices in Libertyville, IL, which is just off of Motorola Parkway.

No idea on what the Droid HD is yet at the moment, as it could be the new Bionic model or a totally different redesign. Some might even say it is pointing towards a large HD display, while several commenters with a sense of humor have called it “Huge Delay” or “Heavily Delayed”. What do you think?

Get invited to Google+

If you’re a Google+ user already, you are now able to share your invites without having to jump through loopholes and perform tricks as some might have figured out and shared with the online community earlier today. All you need to do as a logged in user would be to refresh and you ought to be able to see an invite option to the right of your stream there and then.

Originally, the tip involved asking a current Google+ user to share a post with you, who obviously is a non-Google+ user. Once you clicked on the ?Learn more about Google+? button in the email you receive, you will be sent to a page to sign-up for Google+.

Guess there is now a more straightforward manner to jump aboard the Google+ bandwagon. Have you done so already, and how has your live changed for the better (or worse)?

Acer slide tablet to go in Q4 2011

There are whispers going around that Acer is preparing to roll out a slide tablet form factor in time for the mad holiday shopping season – that means Q4 of 2011 is going to be a very interesting time for folks to check out what is going to be placed on store shelves. Unnamed sources (as usual) within the supply chain mentioned to DigiTimes that said Acer device will feature a 10″ touchscreen display with an ARM-based chipset, where contract manufacturer Compal will handle the manufacturing. Apart from that, no further details concerning the tablet are available, and that only opens wide the door to additional speculation.

We are targeting an Android 3.1 Honeycomb release to go alongside the slide tablet, after all, it wouldn’t make sense to release something which is archaic, leaving users frustrated in the process. A slide tablet would definitely change the way the tablets are looked upon, but through my experience with slider handsets, moving parts tend to fail after some time – especially with constant, rough use, so a slide tablet will no doubt be more fragile than a regular one.

Free iPhone 3GS coming your way

When it comes to Apple products, rumors are never too far away, constantly swirling around the Internet while sowing seeds of discord and confusion. Well, it is more or less confirmed that there will be a next generation iPhone coming your way (Apple won’t kill their goose which lays golden eggs, would they?), although speculation remains as to whether it will be known as the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5. Still, an analyst believes that Apple might just sell the iPhone 3GS for free with contract when the next generation model comes around. If you decide to go off-contract, that might mean the smartphone would retail for around $350 to $400, while the iPhone 4 might see a drop to $100 – or $500 sans subsidies.

Might this move actually result in the 3GS being the budget iPhone? Even though the iPhone 3GS is said to be able to work with iOS 5, that does not mean all features of the updated operating system will be supported, so those who opt for the iPhone 3GS might end up being disappointed if they expect longer support from Apple in the future.

Hybrid Cycle Pit charging station from ULVAC

ULVAC wants more of the world to go green – at least for folks living in Japan. This has caused them to work on a battery charging system which caters for power-assisted bicycles, where it is made possible by integrating a small wind power generator and a solar power generator alongside a battery charger in Japan. ULVAC will be installed at the power-assisted bicycle charging station, where it will be known as the ?Hybrid Cycle Pit,? located right beside the baseball field in Chigasaki City Park. Chigasaki City intends to unveil the charging station for public use from July 10, 2011 onwards.

Nokia C5-00 smartphone updated on the quiet

Nokia’s C5-00 smartphone has just received an update, where it is now known as the Nokia C5-00 5MP. Those who are extremely familiar with technical jargon surrounding handsets would know by now that the 5MP suffix is a dead giveaway concerning the camera’s resolution. Suffice to say, the Nokia C5-00 5MP will come with a 5.0-megapixel EDoF (enhanced depth of field) camera, which is superior to its earlier 3.2-megapixel version. The camera isn’t the only enhancement thrown into the mix though, as you will get an internal storage boost from 50MB to 270MB, while the RAM amount has also doubled to 256MB.

Coming in a candybar form factor, the 2.2″ display at 240 x 320 pixels, integrated GPS and a built-in stereo FM radio were retained. Guess it took slightly more than a year for a quiet update to roll out, considering the original C5-00 was introduced in March last year. Expect to see the C5-00 5MP later this summer, where it is tipped to retail for around £120 ($192) prior to taxes.

Phased array radar help to improve tornado
prediction times

The trouble with tornadoes is this – they are difficult to predict. Sure, we do have the relevant tools in place at the moment to figure out generally just where and when tornadoes are going to strike, but won’t it be better if such systems could be more accurate in their prediciton? The phased array radar comes in handy here, where it comprises of a fixed, flat antenna that is composed of thousands of transceiver elements which send and receive pulses simultaneously. The relative delays between the pulses will help shape the direction of the beam radiating from the array, where this electronically steered beam will then scan the whole sky in under 60 seconds, with the agility that allows forecasters to redirect it to focus on specific areas instantly.

Basically, it is touted to give “forecasters information almost like a movie, as opposed to taking snapshots of the atmosphere” – according to Doug Forsyth who leads radar research at the NSSL (National Severe Storms Laboratory) anyways.

MSI CX480 arrives in the mainstream market

MSI doesn’t only churn out motherboards and licensed video cards, but they do notebooks too just in case you did not notice. Their latest CX series notebooks has received a new addition in the form of the 14″ CX480, where it will mainly focus on its battery life. MSI claims that the CX480 will be able to give you up to 8.5 hours of juice on a single charge, while you can also reap the benefit of MSI’s in-house fast charging which will power up the notebook in half the time normally required, while an external battery indicator lets you check out just how much juice the CX480 has left without the need to boot up. Netbooks have been able to achieve such battery life in the past, but bear in mind that those are not full fledged notebooks like the CX480, so if it works as claimed, it would be quite an achievement.

MSI is also proud to claim that the CX480 has a startup time that is half as long as other notebooks, although we are not too sure just what kind of benchmarks MSI relies on to come to that conclusion. All hot-running components underneath the hood are also said to be transported to the upper left part and away from the palm rest, helping keep things running cool at all times.

Delkin 64GB SDXC memory card is fastest in the
world

We are rather wary when a particular manufacturer claims that their handset is the thinnest in the world, or in this case, Delkin with their 64GB SDXC UHS-I memory card which is touted to be the “fastest in the world”. The new 64GB 633X rated card was specially built for streaming HD and 3D video applications, where it is able to hit speeds of up to 45MB/s and read at speeds up to 95MB/s, effectively eliminating any pause when it comes to the recording process which users tend to experience with slower cards.

Well, 64GB of storage space translates to around 8 hours of high definition video, and if you are one who prefers to snap photos, that would mean over 17,000 images instead. As SDXC memory cards make use of an exFAT format, they will not play nice with older, non-SDXC devices or operating systems, so you have been forewarned.

HP might license webOS out, Samsung in the
picture

HP, the largest manufacturer of personal computers in the world is currently talking to different parties about licensing their webOS mobile software, according to Chief Executive Officer Leo Apotheker. He mentioned that ?we are talking to a number of companies. I can share with you that a number of companies have expressed interest. We are continuing our conversations.?

This is an interesting development, as it would provide hardware manufacturers with an alternative to Google’s Android and Windows from Microsoft. The licensing of webOS might just help strengthen software operations as PC sales see a slump.

There is no timeframe on when webOS partners will need to be announced, but Samsung is said to be in talks with HP already according to industry insides, although Apotheker has declined to confirm that. Imagine future Galaxy Tab models that run on either webOS or Android – now that would certainly be interesting! Would it be possible to have a dual boot option as well?
