Samsung Galaxy Camera debuts at IFA 2012

It looks as though the rumor mills were correct, Samsung was indeed working on an Android-powered camera, culminating in the Samsung Galaxy Camera (glad to see them keep things short and sweet in terms of the naming convention, unlike the Nikon Coolpix S800c where folks who do not follow the news won’t even know that it is Android-powered), with the Galaxy name being retained to indicate that it runs on the Android operating system. Carrying the tagline, “Camera, Reborn”, the Samsung Galaxy Camera puts to shame some of the newer smartphones as it packs the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, while delivering Wi-Fi connectivity. We have a photo gallery of the Galaxy Camera’s announcement and on-stage action right after the break. (more…)

egos Samsung Galaxy S3 case comes with USB flash
drive

ego has just introduced their Hybrid Series USB design into their latest Samsung Galaxy S3 case, where it will come with the added advantage of carrying around additional storage in the form of a 4GB, 8GB or 16 GB USB flash drive. Fashionistas will obviously be pleased to see that this unique Galaxy S3 case comes in seven different color options, with matching slide-in USB drives to boot. It makes it harder to forget leaving the all important USB flash drive behind whenever you are in a hurry, and it is also a whole lot more difficult to lose it since the color alone would remind you that it ought to be embedded into your Galaxy S3′s case when it is not in use.

The USB case itself is touted to deliver superior protective and scratch resistant qualities, all the while without compromising on access to the slew of ports and controls on your Galaxy S3. White is the standard issue color, although there are blue, pink, yellow, light green, red and black options as well. You can mix and match the case and USB flash drive colors though if you are feeling more adventurous. The 4GB, 8GB and 16GB cases will retail for $34.95, $39.95 and $49.95, respectively.

Archos GamePad gaming tablet released

Archos has just announced their first gaming tablet known as the Archos GamePad, where it will merge physical gaming controls for that old school touch alongside a full Android-powered tablet, delivering an experience that Archos hopes you have never enjoyed before. Despite its name, the GamePad is not just all about play, as it will also be a viable light working device alternative as you can access email, the Internet, as well as a slew of applications through the Archos GamePad itself. On the outside, you will see a 7″ capacitive touchscreen display complete with physical control buttons and analog sticks. Being a Google certified tablet, you can fully access Google Play without missing a beat.

Underneath the hood lies a dual-core 1.5GHz processor that works in tandem with the Mali 400MP quad-core GPU. Apart from that, the Archos GamePad will be equipped with automatic game recognition and mapping tools, where these patented technology will make sure you can enjoy control compatibility with every new and advanced Android game that rolls out. We are informed that over a 1,000 Android games out now will play nice with the Archos GamePad’s physical controls, back catalog titles that originally didn?t support physical controls included.

What do you think of the form factor, is it a wee bit too thin to be comfortable enough to hold for hours of intensive gaming on end?

Samsung ATIV S announced

Yesterday, we looked at the possibility of the ‘ATIV‘ name being used for devices from Samsung that ran on the Windows Phone 8 platform, and here we are today with the official word that Samsung had just introduced their first Windows Phone 8 device, calling it the Samsung ATIV S. This will (hopefully) be the first of many other Windows Phone 8-powered hardware, where Samsung claims it is “a superphone that?s equal parts powerhouse and head turner.” Do you think that they are correct? On the outside, you see an extremely slim 8.7mm brushed aluminum chassis that encases a generous 4.8? HD Super AMOLED display which is backed by Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for that added bit of toughness.

Underneath the hood, you will find a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera at the back and a 1.9-megapixel camera up in front – making us think that this could be the Galaxy Note 2 just for a moment. Available in 16GB or 32GB capacities, you can further expand on that thanks to a microSD memory card slot. To make sure the Samsung ATIV S can last throughout the working day, it is equipped with a 2300mAh battery that should last the distance for the average user, although power users would still do well to carry their charger around.

New USB chargers from AT&T are green enough yet

AT&T logoSo, you are one who tries to make a difference in the world by making the right kind of consumer and lifestyle choices with an eco-friendly slant all the time? Well, if that is the case, then you might be interested in what AT&T has in store for you – new USB chargers that are made out of post-consumer plastics, meaning that these wall and car chargers have housings constructed from a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled plastic in order to help you make a more conscious-friendly decision when it comes to your purchases. These new wall chargers will also sip on minimal juice when plugged in, and are Energy Star 5 rated while exceeding California?s Energy Commission 2013 efficiency standards.

AT&T does seem to be getting bigger on being green, where over the course of last year, the telco company introduced accessory packaging made from up to 30% plant-based materials, as well as kicking off a consumer-focused sustainability website known as EcoSpace. Not only that, they also launched a trade-in device recycling program that results in an eco-rating system concerning the slew of new AT&T-branded postpaid handset devices. [Press Release]

Skype turns 9 today

Skype logoHow far have we come since the invention of the telephone (which was obviously preceded by other kinds of long distance communication tools such as smoke signals and messenger pigeons), and fast forward to today, we are able to keep in touch with folks from halfway across the world in different time zones, at the touch of a button. Skype, the VoIP software of choice for millions of people around the world, has just turned 9 today, and where they are now (after being purchased by Microsoft in October last year) is certainly heads and shoulders above what was originally conceived way back in 2003.

How has the use of Skype impacted you in the past 9 years when it came to communication with your family and friends, near and far alike? Have you since moved on to other VoIP programs or IMs, only to return to Skype, and why? Or are you a true blue Skype loyalist who has never taken a look elsewhere?

Samsung Series 5 Ultra laptop, hands-on

Samsung’s Series 5 Ultra is the first generation of Samsung laptop to get an integrated 13.3″ touch screen optimized for Windows 8. The design language and overall build quality of this Series 5 Ultra reminds us of the 15″ Series 9. The body is made of aluminum, and the design is slick and very rigid. It’s not as thin as the Series 9, but it is in a different price range as well: $799 to $849. (more…)
