BionX Conversion System for Bikes

BionX Conversion System for Bikes

Batteries aren't exactly featherweight, and that results in rather heavy electric bikes that are in the market. The BionX conversion system helps solve that dilemma, as it can be fitted onto any bike and has a maximum weight of 15 pounds. This is made possible by replacing the rear hub with a seven pound, 350 watt gearless and brushless motor while the battery pack is fastened to the frame. Its The lithium-manganese battery will charge within 3 hours and has a maximum range of 70 miles, greatly assisted by regenerative braking. Perfect for those who love tackling hills, since going up consumes a whole lot of power while down hill is a great way to charge itself.

Violence at GTA IV Launch

Violence at GTA IV Launch

I'm an avid video gamer, but it is incidences such as the ones described below that make me hopping mad as they bring nothing but disrepute to the world of video gaming. Apparently a man was stabbed while waiting to pick up the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV, while muggers shattered the jaw of a teen who just picked up a fresh copy. Thankfully, the stabbed victim did not give up his ghost as unlike a video game, you don't have extra lives in the real world. For crying out loud, it is only a video game and you can hardly get any decent resale value from game stores for it. I suppose in a small way the type of game does have a bearing on how the target demographic acts - you don't hear incidences of stabbing and jaw-smashing when a new Pokemon title or Mario Kart Wii was launched.

WiFi Detecting Watch

WiFi Detecting Watch

Just in case your WiFi detecting pen and WiFi detecting shirt malfunctions one day, you can always rely on the WiFi detecting watch without having to bust open your notebook in search for that elusive hotspot (cheapo - just get an unlimited data connection on 3G). At least this will also tell you the time, and all it takes to detect a signal strength (numbered 0 to 8) is a push of the button. The WiFi detector watch will retail for $24.99 from ThinkGeek. Strange, it has been around for quite some time now, but we failed to pick it up on our radar.

New Nokia Concepts Wow

New Nokia Concepts Wow

Nokia showed off several concept handsets at its first ever "Design Event" in Central London at their new Studio, with the "People First" concept being more on the software side, showing a list of people you communicate with based on your last interaction with said person. Sounds like a more organized call log than anything else to me, so it makes me wonder why would something like that take 3 to 5 years to be released? Up next is the "Zero Waste Charger" attempts to reduce power consumption with methods such as a built-in charger timer that activates the device only when it needs juice, but otherwise won't be a power vampire. As for the "Wears in, not out" concept, this does take some brain cells to decipher as the press release mentioned :-

"As more services become available on our mobile devices this concept explores how people could potentially upgrade their devices digitally rather than physically in the future, giving people an additional choice on how they use and update their mobile phones."

Sony SRSZX1 2.0 Speaker System

Sony SRSZX1 2.0 Speaker System

Sony's SRSZX1 2.0 Speaker System targets the average desktop computer that does not need tubthumping bass, but claims to entertain people with "an enriched sound range and fuller bass sound reproduction". Meant for casual use where PC gaming, audio and DVD playback are concerned. It comes in an aluminum finish and is accompanied by a compact wireless remote controller. Technological advances include Mobius Duct technology which 'minimizes wind noise', Turbo Shift technology for extended bass range and a Sigma-Type magnetic circuit for upgraded sound reproduction. There is no word on pricing, but it shouldn't be too expensive.

iPhone Solar Star Edition from Goldstriker

iPhone Solar Star Edition from Goldstriker

Goldstriker definitely knows how to beautify the iPhone as well as a plethora of other gadgets, and the Solar Star edition is their latest attempt. Featured on both the front bezel and Apple's rear logo are 24 carat gold plating, while the rest of the case has the luxurious Balloon White paint found on a Lamborghini Gallardo. This white-and-gold color scheme is pleasant to the eye and looks good to the touch, and comes with updated firmware 1.1.4 as well as is unlocked for worldwide GSM use. You get 16GB of flash memory inside, but the £749.95 ($1,477) price tag will definitely put most people off. I'd rather save that dough for a 3G iPhone, and Apple's original design isn't bad to begin with but this over-blinged version isn't suitable in this day and age where consumers' pockets are being squeezed even for the basic necessities in life.

Maplin Portable Video Recorder

Maplin Portable Video Recorder

Maplin has just rolled out its own portable video recorder that allows you to watch your own recorded home movies instantly without connecting to a TV, all for £179.99. Features include :-

Sounds pretty pricey when converted to dollars, considering it doesn't even do high definition like the DXG-569V HD camcorder at a fraction of the price.

Samsung SyncMaster 245BW Widescreen LCD Monitor

We have spent a lot of time at Benchmark Reviews talking about video cards recently - and with good reason. The discrete graphics segment of the market is currently afire with many outstanding price-to-performance options. When we looked at the offerings from the two biggest players, the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=154 Itemid=72) and A (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=147 Itemid=72)TI/AMD HD 3870 (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=147 Itemid=72), we saw that game performance even when scaled to high resolution was simply outstanding. This begs the question; why with such low-cost entrance into owning cards capable of high-rez gaming, most users are still running a display of 19 or less?Monitors are arguably the most important component for users, getting more usage than any other component of a PC. The only reasonable answer would have to be cost, as until recently displays above the 19 mark have been prohibitively expensive. That's where the SAMSUNG SyncMaster 245BW enters the scene as very attractively priced 24 widescreen LCD monitor.

Come to Makers Faire, Build Gadgets and More!

If you haven’t heard of Maker’s Faire before, check out details here (don’t worry, I’ll wait for you before continuing).  I tried describing it on the phone to a friend earlier today, I said “it’s like a big county fair except instead of people throwing small items at smaller targets, you see them building flamethrowers [...]
