Emporia RL1: a straightforward phone for todays
world

Emporia RL1

Emporia and Vodafone have just announced the release of a stylish-looking feature phone that’s meant to be the “most straightforward mobile phone in the world” ? which is possible, considering how incredibly complex most devices are nowadays, (though I refuse to believe any phone could be as simple as this but I digress.) The RL1 lets you text, make calls, store numbers, set alarms, birthday reminders, and solve your mathematical problems with a calculator. Other than that it does nothing else; which somehow reminds me of the Bluchip BC5i except that the BC5i doesn’t pretend to market itself as a cool, simple phone ? it gets straight to the point.

While the RL1 is a pretty decent feature phone with a talk time of 3 hours, the worst part about it is its price tag. The phone costs $99 (£60) on Vodafone’s monthly pay as you go plan. Who would’ve thought simplicity would be this pricey?

MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition shown off in 30
minute video

MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition

If you can’t get enough of MeeGo and want to see what the latest version of the operating system is like, you’re in luck. Amanda of mysinablog.com has shot an informative half-an-hour long video about MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition. In the video, she goes in depth into pretty much everything you wanted to know about it. While it’s an unfinished build of the operating system, and it is the developer edition, so it won’t be the as the version that regular consumers will be getting their hands on but it should be a pretty accurate representation of what to expect when it is released. The video shows her running the build of MeeGo on a Nokia N900, which is starting to show its age, judging by the slow response it seems to be exhibiting. Grab some popcorn and drinks ? it’s going to take awhile.

Google gets rid of APIs for Translate and other
services

CodeWhile this piece of news might not directly affect you, it looks like some of your favorite websites or web services might be affected by Google’s latest announcement. On the official Google Code blog, they announced that at the end this year, they will be getting rid of some of their APIs (Application Programming Interface). In case you weren’t aware of what an API is, it is a collection of code that’s already written for developers to use. Companies like Google provide APIs to the public so that they can easily implement them into their own apps, websites and services.

iOS 5 rumored to have improved notification
system and widget support

Apple logoWhile we may or may not see the next generation iPhone being unveiled at this year’s WWDC, we’re more or less confirmed to see the next version of Mac OS X at the event. The other big reveal rumored to be at the event will be the iOS 5, the upcoming version of mobile platform Apple designed for its iOS devices (the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad).

Some new rumors have sprouted up concerning iOS 5, and these features are basically what people want to see in the operating system. With Apple tight-lipped as usual, we won’t know until the big reveal at WWDC, but iOS 5 is expected to have a revamped notification system and widget support. Now we all know that iOS’ current notification system is one of the most disliked features of the operating system. An update to the system would definitely be a long time coming, let’s see what Apple has in store for us on that front. As for widget support, it doesn’t seem very likely ? but hey, anything can happen. Then there are also rumors of Nuance technology (Text to Speech) being fully integrated into the operating system.

What features would you like to see in iOS 5?
