ARM-Based Pegatron Netbook Protoype

ARM-Based Pegatron Netbook Protoype

Pegatron, a spin-off from ASUS, has been showing a Netbook powered an ARM processor around. This particular model uses an ARM Cortex-A8 design found in a host of gadgets, including the Palm Pre (same design, but not the exact same chip). Running at a 1Ghz frequency, it is capable of playing 720p video and run basic 3D applications. While Android isn't ready for Netbooks yet, this Pegatron runs Ubuntu (Linux) just fine.

According to Pegatron, the battery life ranges from 4.5 to 8 hours on a 2-Cell battery, which might sound like a lot, except that we have no idea about what it was doing. Was the display on? What is doing anything? Because Nvidia claims that its ARM platform can run for *days* while decoding audio, so we'll need some kind of common benchmark here. With this category of Netbooks, the display will be the primary power drain anyway.

Still, the idea is gathering strength: quite a few people are pushing it, including Qualcomm, NVIDIA and Texas Instrument. Now the question is: can Linux Arm-laptops overcome the rejection that awaited their Intel-based counterparts? Without a significant change in the software+application line up, we doubt it. Averatec N3400 13 Aluminum Notebook

Averatec N3400 13? Aluminum Notebook

We don't usually associate aluminum and cheap, but the Averatec N3400 has caught our attention, as 13.3" is seen by many as the sweet spot between comfort and portability, and at 3.8lbs, this computer is on the light side, for this category. It looks like the outer shell is made of aluminum, but the rest of the casing seems quite "normal". However, for $799 or so, here's what you get:

  • Intel T3400 2.16Ghz (a CULV would have been cooler)
  • 13.3" 1280x1024 with 1.3MP webcam
  • 3GB DDR 2m 800Mhz (8GB max)
  • 250GB hdd, DVD drive
  • 3x USB, 3.5mm audio in/out, VGA
  • Multi-format card reader
  • WiFi-N, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet

Now, we wonder how good the battery life is and if it has a backlit keyboard option.

iPhone SDK 3.1 Beta 3 available with
augmented-reality friendly API

Apple has made its SDK 3.1b3 available to developers. Today's news is that Apple is making a video API available so that developers can retrieve the video feed from the internal camera to build augmented reality apps. The last time we checked, AcrossAir is already doing this, but it might get easier, who knows. If you wonder what Augmented Reality is, check this demo of AcrossAir.

Interestingly enough, Apple has not approve existing augmented reality apps, may be because they want everyone using the same API. Here’s another example:

Kindle is Great No Matter What

Ok. I gave in and bought a Kindle. The price went down to $299.00 free shipping and no tax. Had to buy it. It's sort of funny because I was reading Steve Martin's book in hardback when my Kindle arrived, and so I finished that before I even looked at the kindle. Born Standing Up is the Steve Martin Book I read. Really good.
Anyway I am very happy with the Kindle. It is a slick little gadget that will read to you or play music while you're reading. It also has a wireless connection through Sprint and it works great. I love the darn thing. I have been reading the New Yorker and the New York Times on it. I have yet to read a book on it, but I know it will be a good experience. The newspaper and magazine comes to me while I sleep and is there whenever I want it. No piles of paper to recycle.
People do not realize that the Kindle is still sort of an experiment. It even has a Browser on it that is an experiment. I wouldn't use it unless I didn't have my iPhone close, but it does work if you need it. There are some things that don't have the digital rights that are needed to be on an electronic reader, so when people complain about an article or a cartoon or whatever that is not on the Kindle version, it's because that person or company wont authorize it for digital media. Simple as that. There are many Publishers and people who are still living in the dark ages. This is the future. Amazon is a pioneer. I believe it will work and both the consumer and the suppliers of content will benefit.
Everyone had a hernia over Amazon taking back 1984 and Animal Farm. Amazon noticed that someone put those titles up for sale and yet they did not have the rights for electronic publishing, so they refunded everyone and pulled them off their Kindles. This was bad, however, if you were a smart person, you would have downloaded the books to your computer and you would still have them. Things can be saved and uploaded to and from your Kindle by your laptop or desktop, so this makes Kindle even better. You can upload stuff to it and also e-mail stuff to it (for $.15 a file if you e-mail it). So this was a mountain made out of a mole hill as usual, by all the whiners in our lives. Kindle is great, and I highly recommend it. It will add more fun to your life.
