Wii U name might be rebranded

The Bard once said, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet – and while I agree with that statement in a general manner, surely a console name like the Nintendo Wii U would affect a small minority out there that would only purchase a console based on the coolness level of its name? Word on the street from a Nintendo insider has it that the Japanese company is considering a rebadging of their upcoming Wii U console, and might just call it something else. Right now, we will just have to make do with the Wii U as a frame of reference, and the Japanese gaming company certainly needs a hit in the next console, so perhaps maximizing its chances by giving it a decent name which appeals to the masses might just do the trick? Should Nintendo rename their upcoming console, what would you like to have Nintendo call it?

Reprogrammable magnetic fluids lets you feel
virtual keyboard physically

A virtual keyboard is just that – technically speaking, you are not supposed to be able to feel the keys when your fingers glide all over them as you type in the necessary characters to form that long Word document, right? Not so if Apple has their way, perhaps some time down the road. It seems that Apple did apply for a patent which details a system that employs coded magnets and ferrofluids, resulting in haptic feedback on a touchscreen or virtual keyboard. For example, a coded magnet could be activated when a proximity sensor detects a finger approaching a touchpad or other surface that is full well capable of detecting a touch. Within a certain closeness, the proximity sensor?s output will kick start a coded magnet located beneath the portion of the surface that is about to be impacted. This coded magnet will then draw ferrofluid to it, which means the upper portion of the surface will rise. I do hope that the technology is fast enough to accommodate all of you speed typists out there, otherwise it would be a really awkward situation.

Apple drops a gear, overtakes Samsung as largest
smartphone vendor in the world

Apple logoStrategy Analytics’ latest report shows that Apple has taken the coveted top spot by overtaking Samsung of South Korea, effectively transforming Cupertino to become the world?s largest smartphone vendor in terms of volume. In fact, Apple managed to touch 23.9% of the global smartphone market share in Q4 last year, just edging past Samsung?s 23.5% share. Apart from that, Apple managed to ship 37 million units in Q4, which is neck to neck with the figure that Samsung bandied around – 36.5 million units. (more…)

According to Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, ?while Apple took the top spot in smartphones on a quarterly basis, Samsung became the market leader in annual terms for the first time with 20% global share during 2011.? When you take a closer look at Apple?s annual share, it stood at 19%. It would really be interesting to see just whether Apple be able to retain pole position for a long period of time, or is this going to be just a one-off situation.

US blogger given life sentence in Ethiopian
prison

The Federal High Court in Ethiopia has dropped a life sentence on expatriate journalist and blogger Elias Kifle. Kifle’s occupation is the editor of the Washington D.C.-based blog, Ethiopian Review, where he was sentenced without being present at the courtroom. While there were whispers going around earlier that he could very well be handed down the death penalty which is the maximum for his alleged crime of “political terrorism” in Ethiopia, I am quite sure that he and his family heaved a collective sigh of relief with the new sentence. Kifle is not the only person to be found guilty, as other defendants were also in the same boat as Kifle (although with differing sentences). (more…)

BlackBerry Porsche Design P9531 is CDMA version
of P9981

There is a leaked roadmap somewhere out there that holds information concerning a CDMA version of the P9981, where it goes around with the moniker BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9531. This unique device will feature a 1.2GHz processor as well as an 8GB internal memory that can be further expanded to 32GB, making this exactly the same as that of the Porsche Design P’9981′s innards. Needless to say, those who own a Porsche in the garage and ride with Verizon and/or Sprint will be able to smile, knowing that there is yet another avenue for you to blow a couple of thousand dollars on a new BlackBerry smartphone with a design that is similar in branding to that of your ride. Surely you are better off with more prudent purchases, but then again, buying something exotic is more a matter of the heart compared to that of the brain.

Microsoft looks at Kinect laptop

Microsoft’s involvement in the motion controlled gaming market comes in the form of the Kinect, and they intend to bring things up another notch with the Kinect laptop. The Daily in the UK managed to take a gander at a couple of prototype devices from ASUS which are powered by the Windows 8 operating system, boasting Kinect sensors that are located at the top of the display, while a set of LEDs will run along the bottom, although it will be nothing quite like KITT from Knight Rider. No idea on how the device will see action exactly, but a Microsoft source did confirm that the devices were official prototypes of upcoming laptops that will run on a Kinect sensor. (more…)

Qualcomm owns a game studio, will release
flagship title annually

Who would have thought that a company like Qualcomm would actually own a game studio? And here I was, under my comfortable coconut shell, thinking that processors were the staple of Qualcomm’s products. Mobile gamers could be familiar with the GameCommand video game portal, where it rolled out earlier this month, and will enable Android device owners to choose an entire bunch of titles which have been optimized for the slew of devices running on Snapdragon chips and Adreno GPUs.
