WordPress Deems its Like Button a Success

posts-i-like

For many of us, the ?Like? button is mostly associated with Facebook but two years ago WordPress.com decided to take the plunge and launched its own ?Like? button system. The button effectively allowed readers to like a post that they are interested in and the reader?s “gravatar” (Globally Recognized Avatar) would subsequently be added to groups of other users that share the same taste. The system was launched in the aspirations of readers having the ability to foray through other bloggers and their blogs.

graph

The graph above shows that users are getting on board with the idea recently. You will able to see that the idea has taken its own sweet time in getting some traction and currently the feature is seeing more than 800,000 clicks a week. But as off the ending of last year, people were beginning to catch on at a faster rate. This information comes from a post on WordPress.com?s blog. There are a few possibilities we could venture as to why the company has seen the immense success of the ?Like? feature. It could be because some users relate it to Facebook since it is just below the Facebook ?share? link or it could just be the more logical one that WordPress users are finding the feature useful.

like and share

Now in another development, WordPress has announced that as opposed to the ?Like? button only being on every individual blog post, it will also be featured to all your content with configurable settings so you can adjust your preferences pertaining to the button as and how you see fit. By editing your ?Like? options, you have the choice of allowing people to click the button on your home page, blog posts, and individual pictures within slideshows. Liking a post is a method that WordPress has implemented to allow users to mark items that will show up on your profile under a ?Posts I Like? section. So the next time you ?Like? something on WordPress, do check your profile page for a list of posts and other elements that you have liked since it gives you easy access to them if you need to have a second look after. Just don?t go thinking that it?s going to be appearing on your Facebook profile page as well unless you?ve clicked the ?Share? button.

Apple Stores Update Kids Area From iMacs to iPads

apple_store_ipads_kids_imore

In the kid?s section of an Apple Store, it used to be a low-wooden table, orb-like chairs and the shiny iMacs filled with entertain for the little ones instead of having them rushing around the store and possibly wreaking havoc. Now Apple has implemented a slight change by replacing the iMacs at the tables with app-centric iPads. Allegedly, the company believes that small children instinctively get the concept of touch-based navigation and go to town with it. If that is in fact true, it comes as no surprise that Apple would make the switch from the point-and-click mouse interface to what is now the more intuitive way of navigation. The folks over at iMore managed to grab a picture of what the ?Enfants? table now looks like.

Proof of concept shows apps running side-by-side
on an iPad

video details and more

Due to the nature of iOS and the iPad, apps cannot run side-by-side simultaneously. In fact many consider Apple?s ?multitasking? on iOS as not true multitasking that one can expect on a full fledged computer. Will Apple change this in the future? Who knows? However in the meantime we certainly wouldn?t mind taking a look at concepts, and this particular concept features an iPad that allows for apps to run side-by-side.

Put together by iOS developer, Kyle Howells, this particular proof of concept is a tweaked version of his CardSwitcher jailbreak app that allows users to use up to four apps at the same time. Of course this means that users would require a jailbroken iPad in order to achieve this effect, but it certainly looks promising. Unfortunately it is currently only used for testing and there?s no word if Kyle Howells will put it up for download. In any case we certainly hope that Apple is watching and perhaps one day we could see something similar in future builds of iOS. Until then, check out the video above for a demonstration of the concept in action.

DIY wooden cellphone kit is put together with
parts worth $150

While this DIY wooden phone by MIT PhD student David Mellis is in no way a smartphone by today?s standards, it looks like it has no problems getting the job done as far as placing calls are concerned. Let?s not forget how unique this phone looks and is guaranteed to draw attention to your device wherever you go, plus given that it doesn?t look expensive, no one will try to steal it from you either!

This phone is a 9-volt powered device and features a 1.8? 160×128 TFT LCD display and is made from parts worth $150. It will work regular sized SIM cards on any GSM network and is fully functional – at least as functional as feature (or ?dumb?) phones are concerned. Granted that there are feature phones as cheap, if not cheaper than this wooden DIY handset, it certainly is a pretty novel idea not to mention a pretty unique looking one as well. The goal was not to create a phone to sell, but to ?explore and expand the limits? of DIY, so perhaps we may very well start seeing DIY cellphone kits n hobbyist shops one day.

Pre-ordering Torchlight 2 will give gamers
bonuses in the form of beta keys or a free game

Yes, we know that Torchlight 2 has yet to see an official release date, but if you were planning on playing the game anyway, it seems that there is now an added incentive for you to place a pre-order for Runic Games? upcoming action RPG. It seems that there is an offer going on now on Perfect World Entertainment and Steam where if you pre-order the game from either source, you will be able to either get your hands on a beta key to the Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter MMORPG, or you will be able to receive a free copy of the first Torchlight.

Depending on your needs, it would seem that if you were planning on playing the game anyway, both options sure sounds like a win-win scenario. For those who might be more interested in the Neverwinter MMO, you will have to place your order via Perfect World Entertainment, but for those who are curious and who have yet to play through the original Torchlight game, then pre-ordering from Steam will net you a free copy of the game that will be instantly available for download.

smallest stylus

If you?re in the market for a stylus that?s not too expensive and does not require you to stash in your bag or pocket, perhaps you?d like to meet the MicroStylus. Dubbed the world?s smallest stylus, based on the photos and its design we?re finding it hard to disagree with them! Hotel Bel-Air introduces the iPad in their hotel
rooms for guests to place room service orders

The Hotel Bel-Air might be considered to be an old establishment dating back to 1946, but that doesn?t mean that the hotel hasn?t caught up with the times. HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE rumored for a 10th
May release

Perhaps Verizon slipped up by announcing the Droid Incredible 4G LTE a tad early on their DroidDoes website, but unfortunately apart from its price we have to wonder when exactly will we be able to get our hands on it? Assuming PhoneDog?s sources are to be believed, the upcoming Droid Incredible 4G LTE is slated for a release on Verizon?s network come 10th of May. While no price was mentioned, we can safely assume that it will be sticking to its $299.99 price tag (on a new two-year contract) that was listed on the DroidDoes website.

In case you might have forgotten about the Droid Incredible 4G LTE amidst all the smartphone launches, the device is rumored to feature a 4? 960×540 display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor on board with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, an 8MP rear-facing camera capable of 1080p Full HD video capture and will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream. Will this rumor pan out? We guess we only have a couple of weeks to wait and see, but until then we suggest you try not to get your hopes up too much.

Additional Nikon D600 rumors surface

A couple of days ago we reported on a certain Nikon D600 DSLR camera. This particular camera is rumored to be an affordable full frame DSLR but unfortunately at that time, details of the camera were not known. While the details and existence of the camera have yet to be officially confirmed, it seems that the rumors are back and this time with additional details regarding the D600. As far as price is concerned, the rumors are suggesting that it could be priced at $1,500, a pretty affordable figure for a full frame DSLR camera.

It will also reportedly feature a 24MP camera, an internal AF motor which means that it will only be compatible with AF-S lenses, HD video capture capabilities, and is expected to be announced by Photokina 2012, which means that an official announcement should be arriving before September. It has also been said that a low-priced f/4 lens will be announced alongside the D600. We?ll maintain our skepticism for now until more concrete proof can be gathered, but we are definitely interested at the possibility of a full frame DSLR which could cost $1,500.
