At Nokia World 2011, Nokia showed that it can think out of the box with a very interesting prototype demonstration. Called the “Nokia kinetic device”, it features a flexible display that gives users a brand new way to interact with a mobile device. Instead of the usual touchscreen tapping, swiping, and pinching, the Nokia kinetic device works by being twisted, bent, bowed and tapped. A very interesting concept if you ask me, though it’s definitely not something that could replace traditional touchscreens, though it would do a good job in complementing them.

We all learn a new thing every single day – and for today, did you know that wind turbines are able to garble up radar systems? Yes, that is right – with wind turbines in the vicinity, air traffic control can be an extremely stressful job since all the figures and images you see would be jumbled up. Dr. Dorothy Robyn, deputy under secretary of defense in the US, recently mentioned that wind turbines do pose an unacceptable risk to national security and military training in select areas. This has caused Cambridge Consultants to see an opportunity – and the company that delivered Bluetooth technology as well as the first GSM videophone decided to solve this dilemma using a 3D holographic radar which is smart enough to tell the difference between aircraft and wind turbines, regardless of size.

Do you use iPhoto a whole lot? If the answer is in the affirmative, then you might be pleased to know that Apple has just released an update to their iPhoto software, bumping up the version number to 9.2.1 in the process. This update will handle all issues concerning iPhoto’s rather erratic behavior of quitting unexpectedly, and if you want to make that update, just do it via the Software Update over your Mac. It seems that the “quitting unexpectedly” issue happens only on Macs with the 3ivxVideoCodec plug-in installed, so version 9.2.1 will put an end to this.

Remember all the furore back then that Napster created, not to mention all the other copycats that supported downloading music and other files from multiple sources at once? Well, I guess the digital music scene is never quite far from controversy at all times, where the FCC has just decided to slap a $10,000 fine on unlicensed radio station Pirate Cat which is run by Dan “Monkey Man” Roberts. It seems that this radio cafe operation ran a “broadcast station without a license issued by the FCC on 87.9 MHz in San Francisco, California,” at least according to the FCC’s Forfeiture Order.

It does seem as though it is updating time over at Apple, where there is now an EFI firmware update for the MacBook Air (mid-2011 release) and the Mac Mini, where these new updates will be known as version 2.2 and 1.4, respectively. It really depends on how you like to receive your updates – via the Software Update route or to make direct download? The choice is yours. Basically, the update for the MacBook Air will fix a bunch of issues that include a more stable Lion Recovery process from an Internet connection, while making sure issues with Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance on MacBook Air (mid 2011) models are also solved. The update weighs in at 4MB, so it should be a pretty quick one.

Now here is a special gift which you can get for your geekette – if there is such a word, which would be the FlashHarp USB necklace, merging both fashion and technology in one fell swoop. Basically, this will not only function as a lovely accessory to look at, it is also a USB flash drive for you to stash away data wherever you go, and functions as a working, playable harmonica to boot – makes me wonder whether Davy Jones would have preferred to stash this away under his tentacled beard instead of a crummy key, no?

Are you still wondering whether Nokia did the right thing by rolling out the Nokia Lumia range – the Lumia 710 and Lumia 800, at Nokia World 2011? I would think so, it is Nokia’s best chance to date to get out of their current doldrums, and what better way than to partner with Microsoft (although Android would have been better, heh!)? Gamers will definitely pause to take notice that both Windows Phone smartphones will be able to interact with the Xbox 360 directly. At the Xbox 360 demo desk, an Xbox and an Xbox 360 Kinect has been loaded with the Kinectimals game, while the Nokia Lumia 710 can be used to create and personalize a virtual animal. Once you are done with your selection, you can then purchase a bunch of items from the games store within the game, and you’re good to go, playing with your new digital pet straight from the Nokia Lumia handset or to transfer it over to your TV screen via the Xbox 360.

Now this is a rather interesting twist – Yahoo! Maps is being powered by Nokia, who would have thought? I guess there were clues to such a partnership already, as Nokia and Yahoo! did join forces last year to create an alliance which leverages each others? strengths in email, instant messaging, maps and navigation services. Yahoo! will now make the switch to using the Nokia Maps platform, where a gradual rollout across the globe is happening, starting with folks living Stateside and in Canada first.

Here is yet another screenshot of Google’s very own Music Download Store that might just confirm that such a virtual store is already on its way to the market, and will most probably be up within the next couple of weeks. To put it in a nutshell, folks who want to access music.google.com directly from their Android phones will be met by the screen that you see on the right, where the Google Music Beta Android app will be advertised among others. It does seem as though this page is not static as Google is most likely working on it even as you read this, where the ?Learn more? link did not work earlier, although it now redirects one to this page. Apart from that, the ?Shop millions of songs in Android Market? link is still inactive, but the source code points toward https://market.android.com/music.
When you click on the ?Get Android App? link, it will redirect you to the Google Music Beta app that is currently in a limited free trial phase, and you are still unable to purchase music from within the Android Market. We do hope to see it hit live sooner rather than later though – how about you?
