Alcatel OT-C701, OT-E201, OT-E221, OT-E207

Heading towards Christmas Alcatel has launched a range of very reasonably priced Pay as You Go mobiles which look to be aimed at the mass market. Here I'm reviewing hte OT-C701 - a lovely looking mid-priced phone. And for good measure a few more of[...]

Sprint Will Unlock

Sprint will unlock its phones

Sprint agrees to unlock its phones for California customers to settle a class-action lawsuit, but being a CDMA carrier, Sprint does not have a SIM card that user can pop in and out. Sprint customers could theoretically use their phones on similar networks like Verizon, if Verizon agrees. However, there is still a termination fee if users are still under a service contract.

It is more exciting to think about the ramifications of this settlement, for GSM carriers like T-Mobile and Cingular, whose phone have a SIM card that can be replaced easily by users. AT&T recently came under fire from iPhone users and a similar class-action suit is already at least in the preparation stage.

I think customers should be able to unlock their phones at will. As long as they pay for their service or if they pay the termination fee, they should be in control of their device.

Automating my home

So a couple weeks ago I bought a house.  Its my first house and I'm very excited about it.  To make it mine, as a gadget lover, there's only one thing to do.  And that's turn my house into a 21st century gadget!  It was always the simple things in Star Trek that I really appreciated.  The communicators.  The voice automation.  I want my rooms in my house to be alive!  And its doable.  I'm not sure to what degree yet, but the technology is there and reasonably priced.  I'm looking into setting up home automation.  I have a spare PC that's relatively powerful for this application (P4 2.6 gHz, 512 mb RAM) so could easily be put to the task of running my home.  Not that a PC is even required but would make it even more fun.

So of course now I have to start looking at my options.  Right now, the HA technology that looks most promising is ZWave.  I need to research more to figure out if that's the best one.  X10 is out.  I'm not using old tech for my high tech home!

First, though, I need to pick an OS.  My spare pc currently runs WinXP and I pretty much stripped it of any extraneous software already.  The problem is I haven't found any Home Automation software available for XP.  I'm sure it exists but I just haven't found it.

Then there's the other option, the one that has me intrigued at the moment.  Running Ubuntu with LinuxMCE, an OS project designed specifically for this application.  I watched a 30 minute demo last night and was very impressed.  However it doesn't yet support voice control.

If I found an XP solution that support voice control I might have to go with it.  But if I can't find anything better than LinuxMCE, then I may be running my home on Linux.  I'll keep the Daily Gadget updated with my progress!

Marantz CR201 CD Player

Marantz CR201 CD Player

If you still haven not converted your CD collection to MP3 files, and if you can afford it, this Marantz CR201 CD player might look very good in the living room or bedroom. It is a nice mirror surface that opens to reveal the CD drive. Just underneath the shiny surface, there’s a primitive display that shows basic information. It’s not easy to trust a flat-speaker, but it is likely that the sound is actually pretty decent. Finally this player has a USB port to play files from a USB drive. Marantz CR201 page (Japanese)

Boynq iPod alarm clock. At least that's what we
think it is.

wake-up-boynq.jpgI'm finding this picture hugely confusing. I get that it's an alarm clock. I get that it's made by Boynq. I get that it features an FM radio, line-in and out and works with every dockable iPod (including the iPhone). What I don't get is what that thing is in the top right hand corner. Is that the alarm from a different angle?

By Shane McGlaunBang & Olufsen, the purveyor of high priced audio products, announced its latest MP3 player today called the BeoSound 6. Rabbit Strobe Lights for The Osaka Police

Rabbit Strobe Lights for The Osaka Police

This sounds surreal, but in Japan everything is possible: According to Gizmodo Japan, the Osaka Police is equipping some police cars with rabbit-shaped strobe lights. Note that only the patrol cars around schools will get this. Video in the full post.
