Samsung SCH-i405 spotted in a leak

The Samsung SCH-i405 is a QWERTY slider smartphone that does seem to look like the Epic 4G Galaxy S variant over at Sprint, but bear in mind that this smartphone will actually be arriving on Verizon Wireless’ CDMA network instead. It will more or less fall short of the Epic’s 4G capabilities, but at least it has been spotted in the wild – which means it will be coming real soon. Specifications are still quite hard to come by, but this is more or less the first Android-powered slider from Samsung that will be arriving on Verizon Wireless.

It won’t be a high end model though, since the suggested specifications do point towards a solitary 1GHz processor with a WVGA display. Bear in mind that the Samsung SCH-i405 has already picked up its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certifications, although it hasn’t gained approval from the FCC just yet (which ought to be happening real soon, too).

BestBuy.com halts MacBook Air shipping, refresh
is imminent

Here is the clearest sign yet that Apple’s MacBook Air will be getting a refresh – after all, online retailer BestBuy.com has already halted shipment of its MacBook Air models as you can see above. This is compounded by rumors in recent months that newer MacBook Airs coupled with Sandy Bridge processors are already on the way (and subsequently, all new notebooks too will run on the Sandy Bridge platform). In fact, all four of the current MacBook Air models are now unavailable for shipping.

Best Buy has already begun to place ?DUMMY SKUs? in their system before a refresh arrives, and while they are normally not informed of the precise release date until later on, you cannot say that they are unaware of incoming new hardware. In the same vein, the ?not available for shipping? stance functions just like that.

Fujitsu TH40/D tablet delayed

We brought you news last month that the Fujitsu TH40/D tablet will be arriving sometime in Q3 this year, but it seems that another delay is on the cards. According to Fujitsu, the convertible TH40/D tablet that will be powered by the Windows 7 operating system will experience a delay instead of the initial late June release date in the Land of the Rising Sun. All right, so we do know that said convertible tablet is not going to arrive anytime soon, but will there be any follow up – say, a future release date so that we can re-mark our calendars? Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding no, so we will just have to sit tight and wait for an official word from Fujitsu sometime down the road.

PossessedHand is pure robotics genius, not
supernatural

Don’t expect to see Ecto 1 pull up in front of your driveway just yet with the PossessedHand, as this is an extremely clever mesh of robotics and prosthetics development thanks to Japanese researchers from the Tokyo University who are collaborating with Sony Corporation. This is an external forearm device that can pave the way for independent finger and wrist movement. Why is it called the PossessedHand? Well, that is because it can be strapped to the wrist in the same way as that of a blood pressure cuff, and fine tuned to the individual who is wearing it. Tiny doses of electricity are sent to the muscles in the forearm which control movement, where it will be able to be “taught” to send pre-programmed signals which replicate the movements of normal wrist and finger movements, including the plucking of the strings of a musical instrument.

Hypermilling concept car does 1325 mpg on diesel

The world runs on black gold – there is no denying it. Once the price of oil skyrockets, inflation will hit countries hard, no matter how prosperous you are. In fact, steadily rising gas prices have already caused many of us to learn how to make the necessary adjustments in our lives, slowly cutting down on small luxuries even as companies look to find new ways of trimming their expenditure in an attempt to balance the account books. Well, we can always look to renewable sources of energy to help us move around, or work out an even more efficient solution. This is where the hypermilling concept car comes in, where it is capable of traveling up to 1,325 miles on a single gallon of diesel. Is that an achievement or what?

BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 makes
appearance in CelleBrite system

BlackBerry might be on the decline when it comes to their smartphone market share, but that doesn’t mean the Canadian company is going to raise the white flag anytime soon. No sir, they are still very much in the game, and intend to make a splash with a couple more new models known as the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 as spotted in the CelleBrite system. CelleBrite can function as a collaborative POS (Point Of Sales) system, but it also offers the capability to allow transfer of contacts to and from wireless devices.
Several carriers already use it in their stores, and what you see above is actually a screenshot of CelleBrite that was spotted by an anonymous reader, touting the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and BlackBerry Torch 9850 which has already been loaded into Sprint’s CelleBrite system.

Lenovo ready to launch 2 more tablets

Lenovo has a couple of tablets that will join the increasingly crowded tablet market in the coming weeks, sending a note to members of its affiliate program that informs them that the IdeaPad K1 Android tablet will be announced sometime later this month (that is just a few more days left) or in early July. This might not come across as a surprise for some, since product listings for the tablet have already started showing up all over the place in recent weeks.

Apart from that, the affiliate newsletter also mentioned a ThinkPad Tablet that will be announced this coming Tuesday (June 28th). No idea on whether this will be the similar ThinkPad Android tablet that we heard about earlier this year, or could it actually be a spanking new convertible slate PC that is powered by the Windows platform? As with any other news piece, it makes perfect sense to be patient and wait for an official announcement that ought to happen sometime next week.

DARPA XC2V prototype completed

DARPA’s XC2V is a crowd-sourced military vehicle that has just seen its fully functional prototype getting the final touches before it is ready for action. Taking less than 14 weeks to built from ground up via the “FLYPMODE” concept from Local Motors, it shares a common chassis that can perform both combat resupply and medical evacuation missions. Of course, the XC2V is not armed in any way at the moment, but is fully operational just in case any of the Decepticons happen to pass by earth and want to perform a number on our planet.

DARPA has not commented on cost at the moment, but we more or less suspect that it is cheaper compared to all the governmental red tape that such projects normally have to go through. Isn’t it amazing when you rely on the crowd sourcing model, things get done a whole lot faster (and probably cheaper)?

Nokia N950 spliced open by the FCC, has
12-megapixel camera

Are you the extremely curious type? If you have answered in the affirmative, then might we suggest you check out what the FCC has on offer at the moment? We are talking about one of the most recent Nokia releases, which is the Nokia N950, where it has been split wide open so that you are able to check out the innards. This official disassembly won’t come with any fear-inducing alien DNA effect that will cause a massive mutation in you (Green Lantern, anyone?), but at least you now know for sure the parts that Nokia has crammed in. It seems to carry the BL-4D battery that has less capacity than the N9, coupled with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor.

This is a a pleasant surprise, since Nokia’s N950 information page mentioned that it and the N9 came with similar image quality – rolling out 8-megapixel images. Guess the N950 is capable of so much more if the right kind of firmware is introduced. Why do you think Nokia decided to keep the resolution down by 4-megapixels?
