Water saving gadget roundup

Ecokettle8

Given that hosepipe bans and water conservation are the way of the future, and summer is pressing down hot upon us, we're revisiting water conservation gadgets.  Here's a really small and clever place to start: with the EcoKettle.  I was lucky enough to get one from the lovely folks at Toastess and absolutely love it.  Minimalist packaging, clean and easy design, pleasant to use.  It's cordless, meaning it has a base that it sits in while boiling, but you can easily move the carafe around.  The cord wraps nicely into the base so it isn't dangling about to trip over.  The best part, though, is that it has two compartments: you fill one with up to 1.5 liters of water, and then press a button on top to release as much water into the second chamber as you'd like to boil.  Only want one cup?  Then only release one cup.  Only that one cup gets boiled.  Saves power and water.  At £40 it's a bit expensive for how simple it is; I hope it takes off and hits mainstream so that all kettles end up being made this way.  The technology is so simple that we could've had kettles like this 50 years ago - but sometimes the simplest, most elegant solution takes half a century to think of.  Bravo, EcoKettle!

More ways to cope with the looming water crisis after the jump.

Flashphone Mplat F4K

Flashphone Mplat F4KEver thought of carrying a Bluetooth dongle, flash memory drive, and a personal communicator device running on VoIP software in a single gadget? The FlashPhone Mplat F4K allows you to carry your Skype or SIP phone anywhere, enabling you to make wireless calls by hooking it up to your Bluetooth headset. The flash drive is able to store the softphone software and can save chat histories where space permits. The 128MB version retails for $39.90. Pity the Mplat F4K comes in really awful colors. The Mplat F4K has a very strong resemblance to the iPod Shuffle and could fool those who don't know better.

Ideazon Fang USB Gamepad Review

Everything USB just did a very thorough review on Ideazon's new gamepad - the Fang. They pretty much agree that the Fang is the best gaming device in Ideazon's three-device lineup. It is notable, not for expanding and adding functionality to their devices, but taking it away. Finally Ideazon has taken away the mediocre keyboard function of their gaming weapons and left the gamer to set up their own desktop with an excellent gamepad like the Fang and the keyboard of their choice for everyday computer work.

The slimming fever has spilled over from cellphones to digital audio players. MobiBlu's new US2 (Ultra Slim 2) measures less than 1cm thin that puts it in the iPod nano class. Certain design elements look inspired from the Motorola RAZR, and the US2 is constructed from plastic and polished aluminum with a laser-etched control panel. Unconventional ergonomics in Echery mousepad

Unconventional ergonomics in Echery mousepad
We all have come to accept the fact that mousepads come in nothing other than the flat, hard surface that we know and love. Echery from Korea has turned that convention upside down by offering a mousepad that is mounted on the desk. The pad's designers claim that using it will remove any unnecessary fatigue in the shoulder and wrist. This theory could prove to be a very personal thing, as a lot of it depends on the user him/herself. It could be deduced that most people will find the use of this mousepad off-putting due to its bizarre nature. Needless to say, you can't really place a mouse on it in a stationary position without having it slide off the pad.
