DIY real-life third-person viewpoint

When it comes to gaming, not everybody enjoys the first-person view and end up choosing the third-person view when given the choice. Of course, we don?t have that option when it comes to real-life, or do we? Some smart person out there has decided to come up with a DIY solution to achieve just that. Once it?s set up, you?ll literally be able to see yourself moving along from a third-person?s viewpoint. Of course, you?ll probably feel disoriented and run into a lamppost or two, but it shouldn?t take you too long to unlearn your decades-old habit. The instructions have been posted online, so you?ll be able start 2011 with a brand new view of the world.

Monster AirTalk Bluetooth car kit jumps through
FCC hoops

Bluetooth car kits aren’t exactly the thing that will light up your eyes when you think about gizmos and gadgets, but they do play a rather important, albeit unobtrusive role in saving lives on the road. After all, driving while holding a smartphone or cell phone to your ear is considered a crime in many states already, what more it makes perfect sense to go hands-free if you treasure your life as well as that of other road users. Monster, the name behind what some might say overpriced AV cables, is currently dipping their toes into the automotive Bluetooth accessory market. Just recently, they sent their Monster AirTalk Bluetooth car kit to the FCC, and it has been approved so to speak. While FCC documents did not reveal anything more about the AirTalk device apart from the image seen above, at least you see a rectangular form factor that will most likely be attached to a vehicle?s visor. Monster did not release any word on its pricing or availability though, so we will just have to sit this one out until something official is released.

Asus O!Play Mini launched

Asus has expanded their O!Play media player range with the O!Play Mini, and unlike its larger brethren like the O!Play HD2, the Mini will not sport any USB 3.0 connectivity, although it will still be able to output video at 1080p. A solitary USB 2.0 connector and a multi-media card reader that plays nice with SD, MMC, Memory Stick, and XD card formats. At the back of the device lies an HDMI 1.3 port that will be able to support 7.1 audio in Dolby Digital AC3, DTS 2.0+, True HD and DTS-HD sound, with an RCA port thrown in for good measure. Fret not when it comes to support for popular media files, since the pretty extensive list includes MP4, MOV, XVID, AVI, ASF, WMV, MKV as well as audio support for FLAC files. Slated to hit the US market early next year, it will retail for around $90 thereabouts, but don’t take our word for it until something official is unveiled. The lack of USB 3.0 is disappointing, since more and more media intensive devices are moving towards that direction, so it makes sense to have a far superior connectivity standard built-in to prolong the device’s shelf life.

Nintendo 3DS pre-orders available at GameStop

Looking forward to receiving the Nintendo 3DS in your next logical console upgrade path? Well, you will be pleased as punch to know that GameStop has just opened up pre-orders for the device, and do it in the store itself – that means you can’t do so online. Depending on the store you’re at, the people behind the counter are asking for either $25 or $50 deposits, and a search for “3DS” on GameStop.com will redirect you to a page where you are able to sign up for updates about the system. We suppose the final pricing details as well as launch colors and available software will be released to the frothing masses at Nintendo’s January 19 event in New York City.

Easyglider steam iron concept could make life
easier

Of course, anything that is conceptual often involves technology that is beyond reach at the moment, and we have the Philips Easyglider this time around. This innovative steam iron concept was developed by Studio NAMIC, and needless to say, it will deliver a gamut of improvements over the current steam irons that you see in the market. Apart from being extremely lightweight, this was designed to be extremely ergonomic in nature thanks to its sleek base that is a snap to operate, and even easier to carry and store. The iron will feature a new gripping method that helps prevent Repetitive strain injury (RSI) – strange, and we thought that only heavy computer users suffered from RSI primarily, looks like housewives are not exempt either. This new gripping method will make room for ambidextrous use, so lefties out there can let out a big smile. As for the central button, it is placed behind the fingers, where the steam controller can be activated by squeezing it against the core of the iron like a trigger. This action results in a better control of the amount of steam that is generated by the iron which will oscillate continuously between the minimum and maximum squeezing pressure on the button. No idea on whether technology will catch up with this idea in due time, but it ought to make housework a whole lot easier.

Acer beTouch E140 smartphone arrives at the FCC

The Acer beTouch E140 smartphone was announced earlier this month, and to see it arrive at the FCC certainly means one thing – it is being readied for a commercial release Stateside, that is, if carriers want to bring it to the market. Appearing on the FCC, the Android 2.2-powered device will sport a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen and a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor. Retailing for 200 Euros a pop, it seems to be marketed towards the entry level Android smartphone segment, so we might just see an increase in Android device ownership as it becomes more accessible across a broad market. If you were gunning for an Android device, would you go for a tablet or a smartphone?

Archos 70b looks into pre-orders

The Archos 70b that visited the FCC earlier this month is finally available for pre-order, and this e-book reader won’t really break the bank either. It seems to cater towards the entry-level market, boasting a 7-inch WVGA touchscrene display, 4GB of internal memory to hold all of your favorite digital tomes, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity that helps you surf the Internet as well as download your e-books – no 3G support here, so you might just have to live it out in public places with Wi-Fi networks or at home instead. An SD memory card slot is there for future expansion purposes, powered by a 10-hour battery life. Would you fork out ?99.99 for this? Well, it is expected to hit the market in Q1 next year, which is three months at the very latest. We don’t forsee this making a huge splash in the e-book reader market anytime soon, but it might be a good primer for those who are getting started.
