A man in the UK named Trevor Prideaux who spent his life working with the aid of a prosthetic left forearm recently found a way to make it more useful: by building a smartphone dock into it. While the dock won’t give the phone HDMI output, laptop capabilities or even charge the phone ? it does hold the smartphone in place, which makes it easier for a man like him to use and store when unneeded.
With touchscreen phones taking precedent over feature phones in today’s world, a dock like this could help out physically-challenged folk who would otherwise have trouble operating such large devices with only one hand. I can’t say for sure if this is the first time it’s ever been done, but it does make you wonder why it’s not very common ? perhaps this will kickstart a trend? Users will probably have to stay loyal to a single phone though, since it won’t be cheap to refashion a new arm dock each time they use a different model.

Remember today’s earlier reports about the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 update not arriving until next year? Well, it looks like those rumors were on the spot because RIM has come forward with a statement confirming its release date. The Blackberry PlayBook OS 2.0 update will be released to customers in February 2012. To add to the bad news, the BlackBerry Messenger app won’t be making it to the update, corroborating with reports about RIM having trouble bringing BBM to the PlayBook. However, use of BBM through BlackBerry Bridge is still available.

While Sprint’s 4G is still on WiMAX and its LTE network is yet to launch, the carrier has already announced what comes next ? LTE Advanced. At the 4G World conference in Chicago today, Sprint mentioned that it will be rolling out its LTE Advanced network in the first half of 2013. The network will be making use of the 800MHz spectrum and is touted to have speeds up to six-times faster than the current crop of LTE available.
LTE Advanced will be capable of reaching peak rates of 1GBps in hotspots and 100Mbps with mobile devices, which means that it will qualify as an official 4G standard ? something that carriers haven’t been able to do today, despite their loose usage of the term. If things go according to plan, Sprint could be the first carrier in the country to offer 4G again ? just like it achieved with “4G” with WiMAX. However, two years is a long time, so we’ll just have to wait and see. How many of you are excited for LTE Advanced’s arrival?

It looks like Nokia has more to announce than just Windows Phone devices at Nokia World 2011 tomorrow. It looks like the company will be unveiling a new Symbian device at the event as well. The folks over at engadget managed to catch some Nokia reps unpacking some boxes containing an unnamed Nokia device. The model number of the device has been covered up, but judging by its looks and tagline, it is speculated to be the Nokia 303 ? a low-end 240 6th Edition Touch-and-Type device.
Not much is known about it except for its QWERTY keyboard, it carries WiFi and 3G connectivity, has social functions and will come in at least two colors ? red and gray. The presence of the WhatsApp icon also suggests that the phone is going to come with the app. While the phone should be announced tomorrow, don’t expect to see it on this side of the world. After all, Nokia has clearly stated in the past that it won’t be releasing Symbain phones in the US anymore, but then again I doubt a lot of people here are pining for one anyway. Stay tuned for more details from Nokia World 2011 tomorrow.

Most smartphones use a form of Slide to Unlock to go from the lock screen to the main menu. The feature was (I think) introduced in the original iPhone, and it’s not clear if there was prior work. In any case, Apple has been awarded the patent, which has been filed in 2005. Now that the patent has been officially awarded to Apple, the company may use it to go after folks who have been using something similar, namely score of Android phones, to pick the juicy part of the market.
