Ubuntu introduces HUD control system

Ubuntu must have taken a look at their application menus and decided that something needs to be done about the situation – and hence, took that out, replacing it instead with a HUD control system. This HUD control will replace the aforementioned menus with a panel where one is able to write the command that you want carried out, and I am sure that voice control advocates would say (naturally, do you expect them to write?) that writing is far more inefficient compared to speaking out a command. Well, this “head-up display” (HUD) box in the Ubuntu operating system will take some getting used to at first, and at least it is nothing like Facebook’s Timeline feature which will be compulsory for everyone soon, as the developers of the Linux-based software will offer the HUD as an option at first, letting one “hide” their menu bars. Hopefully they will continue to provide such an option down the road. (more…)

BMW looks at touch sensitive smart fabrics

BMW is one of the German automakers that have stirred the hearts while keeping pulses racing with their range of vehicles. Of course, they have had their fair share of misses, but those are rare and few in between amidst all the hits. It is still the yuppie vehicle to purchase in many countries regardless of the continent that you are on, and their motto of it being the “Ultimate Driving Machine” certainly holds true for many of us (unless, of course, you are able to afford one of those super exotic brands). Well, BMW intends to push their claim as the ultimate driving machine even further by developing a new interface technology that will see action in its futuristic looking cars, calling it ?Smart Fabrics.? Kinect and Windows Phone team up for holographic
game engine

video details and more

The future of 3D holograms might be nearer than we think, although we will not be playing any form of 3D chess anytime soon ala Star Wars. This particular Kinect hack and a Windows Phone have resulted in a pseudo-holographic effect, where a demonstration of it relies on a simple game engine to get the job done. The Kinect is able to “see” the position of the viewer, while the 3D engine will adjust the image accordingly in order to deliver an illusion of an actual 3D object. The 3D engine will be able to support anaglyph 3D (red/cyan glasses) in order to experience a superior effect in real life. A windows Phone 7 application will control the app as well as the helicopter, as the phone’s built-in accelerometers get to work while you enjoy your five minutes of fun.

Lytro talks up other smartphone manufacturers

It seems that the top brass over at Lytro are willing to work with smartphone manufacturers directly in order to deliver its light-field photography technology into future handsets. An interview with PCWorld saw Lytro chairman Charles Chi claiming that the company is well positioned to build and market products under its own branding, although admitting that the smartphone ecosystem is “very complex” and “very different.” According to Chi, “For us to compete in there, we’d have to be a very different kind of company. So if we were to enter that space, it would definitely be through a partnership and a co-development of the technology, and ultimately some kind of licensing with the appropriate partner.” (more…)

HP to make webOS open source by fall 2012

HP announced that they would make webOS open source by the time fall 2012 rolls around, which is not something that the tech industry envisioned. After all, most folks thought that HP would have taken the more “normal” route of selling the operating system, or at least, send it back to the drawing board if they intend to pursue this course. We are pleased to say that Enyo 2.0 was released today, and the Enyo logo that you see here is HP’s app framework for webOS. You need not fret as Enyo is 100% browser-independent, so regardless of whether you are with the Safari, Chrome, or Firefox camps, you can still access the entire gamut of webOS apps from the browser itself.

Just about anyone connected to the Internet will be able to access such apps, and indirectly, it might just see a sudden increase in popularity and value of the webOS platform, regardless of whether one is accessing those apps from a tablet, desktop, notebook, netbook or smartphone. Do you think that webOS’ future is a bright one with this step taken? [Press Release]
