Consumer Reports has recently announced that the Verizon iPhone 4 didn’t make their list of recommended phones. Why? The same reason as before ? the whole antenna-gate issue that made the AT&T iPhone 4 famous when it was released. The Verizon iPhone 4 is also prone to drop calls in certain areas, according to Consumer Reports. Here’s what they had to say: ?The Verizon iPhone 4 closely resembles the original AT&T iPhone 4 in many positive respects, including offering great multimedia functionality, a sharp screen, and the best MP3 player we?ve seen on a phone?Unfortunately, it also shares with its sibling the possibility of compromised performance in low-signal conditions when used without a bumper or case.? But regardless of what they said about the first iPhone 4, that didn’t stop it from being the one of the hottest selling phones in the world. What do you think of the whole iPhone 4 reception issue? Blown out of proportion or something very real?

We previously reported an unconfirmed tip about HTC releasing Gingerbread (Android 2.3) for the Desire family, but now we have confirmation. According to an official statement HTC released to the folks at SlashGear, the Desire family and the Incredible S will be receiving the Gingerbread update sometime in Q2 this year. Here’s what they were quoted saying, “We are excited to announce that the Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S will receive the Gingerbread update in Q2.” As for the non-Desire HTC phones, it’s uncertain whether they will be receiving the updates as well, but let’s hope they do or we’ll have a whole legion of unhappy HTC customers.

Great news HTC Aria users ? AT&T has kept their promises and the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Aria phones on their network is now live. The update will require HTC Sync for complete and will put the device through a hard reset, so make sure you have all your apps, texts and whatever you have stored on your phone backed up before you proceed with anything. If you own a HTC Aria on AT&T, you can head over to the official HTC website to grab the update and read the instructions on what to do. While AT&T has been strict on their Android users by disabling features such as app sideloading at least they haven’t been too shabby with the Android updates. HTC Aria users, let us know how the update works out in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy S users in the states must be green with envy now ? according to some reports online, somebody at Samsung Germany stated that the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (the version of the Galaxy S that’s been sold everywhere except the states, currently on Android 2.2) will be receiving the Gingerbread update this March. It these statements turn out to be the truth, the Samsung Galaxy S will be one of the first phones to officially receive the Gingerbread update with the other 2 phones before it being the flagship Google phones (Nexus S and Nexus One). It comes as no surprise that the Galaxy S phone will get the update, but seeing the pitiful state of the Galaxy S phones in the US (some are still stuck on 2.1), we wonder if we’ll be going through the same delays that we did waiting for Froyo?

Who said you had to use a smartphone with the Skype app if you wanted to use Skype on a phone? Thanks to Skype’s new Skype To Go service, Skype users can now make international calls at regular Skype rates on a regular phone. All you have to do is register the international number you would like to call, and Skype will generate a local number for you to call. You can then call those registered numbers and you will be billed at Skype rates, using your Skype credit. The best part of this service is that you’ll be able to use any phone to use the service. Skype gives you 9 Skype To Go numbers for free and is currently available to users in 18 countries. Head over to the Skype To Go site for more details.

As we’re heading into a well deserved week-end, we would like to look back at last week’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) – the world’s biggest wireless tradeshow. It has been the busiest one that we’ve seen, and one of the most interesting as well. The synergy between handset makers and chip makers has never been so strong and we can tell that the industry is reaching a comfortable cruise speed when it comes to smartphone innovation. Samsung, NVIDIA, LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Qualcomm, Palm, Microsoft, Blackberry, Intel, Nokia, HTC and Google were remarkable, here’s why.

The CEO of the email company, OtherInBox, Joshua Baer, has recently proposed a new email standard that he hopes will take off. The idea is that emails should carry a new header that lets the in-box that the email is only valid until, and expires after a certain date. When the expiry date has passed, the email client/service should automatically delete the expired email. This concept will help users to automatically clean their inboxes by removing emails such as coupons and invitations that have gone past their due dates. It could even be applied to notifications of group activities, shipping notices or even system alerts (that become irrelevant after a certain time period). A pretty clever idea, since I’m one of those people who can’t be bothered going through old messages just to delete expired coupons. The only problem with this proposal is that it is a standard, and he’ll need to get everyone on board or at least the major email client/service players if he wants it to be successful. What do you think of self-deleting emails?

Ever wanted an image projector in your own house but didn’t want to spend money on one? Well the good news is you can have one up and running in just a few minutes, and it’s not even complicated. One light source, an image to project, and a glass lens to focus the light. The creator of this projector only used parts and objects he found lying around the house, and there’s a good chance you’ll have all the necessary parts in your house as well. The instructions have been posted online on instructables, and if you need a last minute projector for that last minute home meeting, well, you can’t really go wrong with it.

In addition to the driving controls, you are treated to a mini fridge, strobe lights and even a smoke machine.
