Netflix lost 800,000 subscribers in Q3 2011

Netflix logoIf you’ve ever wondered about whether the majority of consumers were in favor of Netflix’s decisions made this year, you don’t have to wonder anymore. Netflix announced its Q3 2011 earnings report today, and things aren’t looking too bright for the DVD rental/video on demand company. The recently announced report showed a net loss of 800,000 subscribers since last quarter, even though it was up 42% compared to Q3 2010. The explosive growth that the company has been experiencing over the past two years has finally come to a halt.

This goes to show what a huge impact a few bad decisions can do to a company. Stock prices have declined around 27% in hours after trading, falling well below $100 a share, showing the market’s unhappiness with the company. While the company is far from collapsing, it had better get back in shape before it’s too late. Was Netflix’s Q3 2011 report in line with what you expected?

Verizon testing family shared data plans

Verizon shared dataEarlier this year Verizon first mentioned its plans of introducing family shared data plans and since then we haven’t heard much about it. But it looks like Verizon might be getting ready to roll it out in the near future. The folks over at Droid-Life were tipped off by a reader noticed something in his data usage stats after dialing #DATA on his Verizon line. In the incoming text showing his data usage, it specifically says “SHARED: INDIVIDUAL” as opposed to a text just showing data usage without mentioning the word “shared” anywhere.

This text suggests that Verizon could possibly be testing its shared data plans that were promised earlier, and that the service might be ready for the public to use. Then again, it could have just been an isolated incident and doesn’t mean anything. Either way, keep your eyes peeled. Anyone on a shared Verizon family plan getting the same result after dialing #DATA?

HTC announces partnership with Dropbox

HTC DropboxHTC has officially announced that it is now partners with Dropbox and will be enhancing the cloud storage experience for its new Android users. According to a post on its Facebook page, all new HTC Android phones will come with Dropbox installed, and instead of the free 2GB that new users normally get, they will automatically be bumped up to 5GB so they don’t have to worry too much about not having enough space in their accounts.

Dropbox is definitely one of the most useful apps you can find on any smartphone and computer so I’m sure a lot of people can appreciate the extra free storage, though I don’t think it’s going to be a dealbreaker when it comes to getting an HTC Android phone VS another manufacturer. No word on whether this promotion affects current Android HTC users, but keep those fingers crossed.

Google+ to expand its reach

Google+If there’s one advantage Google+ has over Facebook, it would be a whole suite of Google web products and services to link with. It looks like Google has finally realized this and has been slowly implementing Google+ features into its other services. Last week it was announced that Google Reader will be undergoing some changes to bring closer integration with Google+ and it’s not going to be the last Google product to do so.

Unnamed Motorola tablet visits the FCC

Motorola tabletThere have always been rumors about Motorola releasing a successor to its XOOM Android tablet, with some leaked photos of the tablet surfacing. However, it looks like one of those tablets is one step closer to going on sale at retail outlets. An unnamed Motorola tablet has just passed through the FCC though the listing doesn’t offer anything new about the device and here’s what we know so far:

It’s going to be feature either a 8″ or 10″ (1280 x 800) display, it should have a dual-core processor of 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 16/32/64 GB of storage, WiFi, and Bluetooth support. No mention of 3G or 4G mobile broadband but that could change or there could be multiple versions of the tablet. After all, this tablet might be the first of many to pay a visit to the FCC. Motorola XOOM users are only starting to get the 4G LTE upgrade now, so it’ll be interesting to see what Motorola will be offering to compete with its previous tablet. Preloaded Ice Cream Sandwich, perhaps?
