Amazon Kindle 3G joins the price war

Is there a price war brewing among e-book reader manufacturers? Perhaps, what with the new Nook Simple Touch Reader being introduced today at a $139 price point, so what is Amazon supposed to do? They decided to hit back, and hit back hard – the Amazon Kindle 3G is now on offer at $164, dropping from the original $190 price point, letting you enjoy both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity that the new Nook lacks. Of course, this new version is cheaper because it comes with advertisements, but that is a small price to pay since you can spare the time to let those ads pass, right?

BlackBerry 7 OS leaks out

Operating system and hardware leaks tend to happen more and more often these days, although we have no idea where those ninjas come from – shooting a blurry image here and there, capturing a screenshot of a page, you name it. Well, the BlackBerry platform is not exempt either, and the latest leak will involve the BlackBerry 7 OS – perfect, considering how RIM announced that they will give BlackBerry 6.1 a miss on future devices.

Porsche Electric Boxster E debuts, not up for
sale just yet

It doesn’t matter if you’re a multi-billionaire with more than enough cash to sustain another 10 generations of descendants – all the money in the world still can’t let you drive home the Porsche Electric Boxster E yet even though it has debuted at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum in Berlin. The three electric test Boxsters will feature one model that comes with an all-wheel drive in the form of an electric motor on the front and rear axle, while the remaining two are rear-wheel drive machines. According to Porsche, the dual-motor Boxster E is capable of delivering Boxster S levels of driving dynamics, and that includes a 5.5-second 0-to-62 sprint with a limited top speed of 124 mph – gah, that’s nothing for a supercar, but then again with something like this, you would be more prone to cruise down the hottest night spots instead of zipping by in a jiffy to show the world that you’ve “arrived”.

Windows Phone Mango details announced by
Microsoft

Nokia has taken note of Microsoft’s announcement concerning the new Windows Phone 7 (better known as Mango – what is it with all these fruity names?) that will be demonstrated on several Nokia handsets. You might find yourself taking some time to get used to the “Nokia with Windows Phone” branding – after all, it isn’t as natural as HTC’s partnership with Google right from the get go.

Nokia has this to say about their strategic partnership, “Today Microsoft has announced the key new ingredients of the latest ‘Mango’ release of the Windows Phone operating system. This is the software that will be used on the first Nokia with Windows Phone device, and so should be of keen interest to Nokia-watchers everywhere.”

NHK develops flexible OLED display

NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, is currently making leaps and advances on the development of thin, flexible displays – keeping their fingers crossed that a roll-up TV is on the cards sometime down the road. This is a task that NHK has been working on for several years now, and their latest prototype of the flexible OLED screen will be paraded at an open-day event at its R&D center in Tokyo this week, with reporters getting first dibs in a preview earlier. What makes the prototype of today different from the one which was displayed a couple of years ago would be the inclusion of a more reliable manufacturing process.

Gigabyte ECO600 wireless laser mouse arrives at
the FCC

Wireless mice need to run on batteries, and until today, we have yet to see a kinetically powered wireless mouse. Perhaps manufacturers out there should take notice – after all, when you are enraged by all the bad news that you read online as well as piling paperwork that never ends on your desk, what better way than to vent all those frustrations by shaking your mouse vigorously with both hands, imagining it to be the neck of the most despised politician you can think of? Not to mention all the movement of the mouse when you work might just help generate some power, but we guess such technology isn’t that efficient just yet for it to run on kinetic power alone. The next best thing? Get a long lasting battery inside – and that is exactly what Gigabyte has done with their ECO600 wireless laser mouse.

PSP System Software Update 6.39 PSP guides users
through PSN password change

Sony has just introduced its latest system software update for the PSP, numbering version 6.39. This update will help guide you PSP owners through the PlayStation Network (PSN) password change process, while bringing along the fringe benefits of system software stability alongside improvement in some features.

This is good news, considering the recent PS3 firmware release helped fixed serious security issues, so it makes perfect sense for Sony to look out for their PSP fanbase as well – after all, there are a few dozen million PSP handheld consoles that do connect to PSN as well.

Just make sure your PSP is fully charged so that the entire password change process will be as smooth as possible – after all, you do not want to end up with a device that dies on you while you’re at a crucial point in your password change process, only to start all over again, do you?

Tom Clancys Ghost Recon Online free-to-play game
announced

Well, is the free bandwagon gathering steam today or what? First we have the Halo: Reach demo being made available for nuts, and now we have word of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online free-to-play game being announced. This is Ubisoft’s first foray into the free-to-play game market, where the game will hope to bridge the hardcore console games and the free-to-play online games markets, where the latter really seems to be hitting it big in Asia.

Ubisoft’s testing of such waters is definitely something of a surprise, considering most of the typical games these days on consoles cost considerably more. Guess in this case, Ubisoft wants to offer more perceived value as you can always play online for free, but when it comes to virtual goods, that’s where they will ring up the cash registers.

Opera mini browser rolls out for the iPad

The iPad will finally be getting another third-party browser in the form of the Opera mini browser 6.0, which would make it the biggest brand name third-party browser at the moment. Not only that, the iPhone 4 app has also received an update that now supports Apple’s Retina Display – expect better looking images on your smartphone then if you decide to make the upgrade/switch.

One of Opera’s biggest benefit would be its speed, where it has the ability to reduce the size of web pages in order for your device to load said page faster. In addition, tabbed browsing is also thrown into the mix as well as a new user interface. If you’re interested, Opera mini browser 6.0 can be downloaded for free in the App Store, weighing in at a 3.4MB download that will play nice with iOS devices which run on iOS 3.0 or later.
