BlackBerry concept phone peeks at a potential
QWERTY slider

There is nothing quite like a concept for you to let your imagination run wild, right? After all, you need not be bogged down by details such as physical limitations or a shorter battery life due to the number of features you threw into the mix. Well, here is a rendering of a concept phone by someone who figured out that RIM might actually want to consider when it comes to churning out a BlackBerry 10 QWERTY slider. The whole idea of this concept is to maximize the display area. When the concept phone is closed, the bezel looks extremely narrow, although it does not really break new ground in terms of hardware design.

Slide it open, and your eyes (and obviously, fingers) will be treated to a new-style angled keyboard for a greater ergonomic user experience. After all, this angled keyboard was picked up as a patent by RIM earlier this year. What do you think of the overall design – is the keyboard too flat for your liking at first glance? I do hope that RIM nails their next BlackBerry device correctly with the mass market, as the company really needs a shot in the arm at this point in time and in the immediate future.

LG Spectrum user manual updated, has Ice Cream
Sandwich references

Hmmm, I guess the age old adage that “better late than never” can be safely applied to the LG Spectrum. After all, we have already spotted leaked renders of the LG Spectrum 2, and here we are with word that the old school LG Spectrum user manual has just been updated, sporting references to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Unless someone out there made a typing error on purpose, this can only mean but one thing – Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to the original LG Spectrum. Basically, it does seem as though the operating system update is just awaiting its final approval from the folks over at Verizon.

Some of the new features found on Ice Cream Sandwich has been included into the updated manual, including multi-tasking capability. I guess it takes nothing else other than patience for Verizon to perhaps issue a statement for the arrival date of Ice Cream Sandwich for LG Spectrum owners. After all, if you had waited all this while, what is a short while more, right?

Eliodomestico water filtration system

The Eliodomestico water filtration system has picked up a gong this year under the ?Professional Winner for Social Impact?, where it was conceived by Gabriele Diamanti to be an improvement over the current water filtration system. This particular project is not only simple and straightforward, it will also do its part well to ensure that folks who drink water need not look for unsafe and unhygienic sources any more. After all, it has a no-nonsense construction that helps keep production costs down, and is constructed from readily available materials.

To put it in a nutshell, Eliodomestico is an open-source eco-distiller that is powered by solar energy in order to deliver safe drinking water for the masses, especially those who live in developing countries. It produces freshwater in a simple manner, using sea or brackish water for starters. Capable of producing up to 5 liters of life giving water daily thanks to a direct solar-powered distillation process, Eliodomestico does not require filters or electricity to work, and has minimal maintenance. Sounds like a dream device to own, no?

Amazon Kindle Fire might see price drop to $169

Typing in landscape mode is not comfy because the keyboard is so wide

While we do know that Amazon is working hard to roll out the spanking new Kindle Fire 2 to the masses later this fall, does that mean the original Kindle Fire will just die a quick death? Apparently not, as there are whispers going around that the original Amazon Kindle Fire will experience a price drop when its successor debuts, at least according to the good people over at DealNews. DealNews claims that Amazon will follow in Apple?s footsteps by retaining both the iPad 2 and new iPad, so that would mean the Amazon Kindle Fire will most likely see a price drop to perhaps $169, which would make it possibly one of the lowest for the Android-powered tablet market.

This might also be part of Amazon?s effort to price themselves against Google?s hot new tablet, the Asus-manufactured Nexus 7 that retails for a mere $199. What do you think about this move if it is proven to be true? Do you think that a 15% discount off a year-old tablet is compelling enough to have you part with your hard earned money? Only time will tell, so we have decided to strap ourselves in for this exciting ride.

Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite unveiled, comes with
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

When it comes to the world of Android-powered tablets among the more established names in the industry, Huawei does not really pop up into one?s minds. However, the company is not going to just bundle over and call it quits anytime soon, having officially announced the Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite which will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, although we are left wondering whether there will be an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update coming our way in the near future as well.

As the moniker gives the game away, the Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite will feature a 7? display at 1280 x 800 pixels, which is not too far different from the Huawei MediaPad that rolled out in 2011 that sported the Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system. Just what kind of hardware will the Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite pack? Well, it is said to come with ?3G cellular voice, SMS and MMS?, Wi-Fi connectivity, 1080p video playback, a metal unibody, and a rear camera of unknown resolution. We do hope to hear more about the Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite in due time, that is for sure. In the mean time, you can read more about the Huawei MediaPad 10.1 here.

Apple Q3 results fall below expectations despite
selling 17 million iPads

Apple logoApple has just announced their financial results for Q3 ended June 30, posting a quarterly revenue of $35 billion and a quarterly net profit of $8.8 billion. Comparing it to a revenue of $28.6 billion and net profit of $7.3 billion in the year-ago quarter, it must be said that international sales make up a whopping 62% of the latest quarter?s revenue. Sounds like impressive figures are being bandied around here, but this is Apple we are talking about here, and those figures translate to an earnings miss which has sent Apple?s stock to drop by over 5% initially. ASUS Padfone receives new OTA update

ASUS PadfonePersonally, I don’t know too many people who own the ASUS Padfone, but if you’re one of them, expect a new over the air update to start rolling out to your device this week. The new update brings your phone/tablet up to Android 4.0.4 (no Jelly Bean yet) in addition to some important changes. The update improves system stability and optimizes operating performance, dynamic display switch performance, power consumption, camera performance and quality; improves the message/email edit function, input method optimized, increased SD card support to up to 64GB, added Super Note, and adds device tracking and data protection support.

Very useful features that Padfone users will no doubt find helpful. If you haven’t received any notification updates on your device yet, go to Settings > About > System Firmware Update > Check Update, or download it manually from ASUS’ website. Do let us know how the update goes for you.

MSI GT70 and GT60 gaming notebooks now come with
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M

When it comes to gaming notebooks, you cannot have them small and light – and this particular rule has no two ways about it. After all, no gamer worth his or her salt is going to sit there and play on a tiny display, and neither do they want stripped down parts to the bare essentials that it cannot even crank out a decent frame rate, never mind that lugging a real gaming notebook around is no mean feat on one?s shoulders. Well, MSI hears this clarion call, and have just updated their GT70 and GT60 gaming notebooks with the latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M graphics chipset, which is said to be the fastest mobile GPU to date.

It will be powered by a speedy Intel Core i7-3610QM processor, a Killer E2200 Game Network, Dynaudio Tech speakers with THX Surround Sound and SteelSeries Programmable Backlit Keyboard, ensuring that gamers will be able to experience the ultimate in mobile gaming, although I see this as a waste for folks who want to purchase this just to play Facebook games all day long. It is a travesty, I say!
