Thunderbolt Promises Data Transfer At Lightning
Speed

You know the problem: your multi-megapixel SLR takes great pictures, the HD camcorder shoots outstanding video, and the smartphone in your hand goes ?click!? a few million times a day. Mountains of data keep piling up, and pretty soon you?re pretty busy backing up, moving things around, and constantly waiting for your computer to finish up, because USB never seems fast enough for the demands of the modern media world.

While USB 3.0 is starting to offer some relief, Intel is entering the market with its even speedier ?Thunderbolt? technology, developed in tandem with Apple and advertised as ?the fastest data connection to your PC.? At an event in San Francisco on Thursday, Intel showed a new Macbook Pro copying a 4.5 gigabyte file to an external RAID in less than ten seconds. A virtual speedometer on the laptop?s screen indicated transfer rates varying between 400 and 700 megabytes per second while the file was being copied. Top speed for the new technology is 10 gigabits per second ? more than 800 megabytes per second ? according to Intel.

Founder of MP3.com plans to launch Digital Audio
Recorder.fm

DAR.fm launch presentation

Yesterday, Michael Robertson, the founder of MP3.com announced that he will be launching a new online service called Digital Audio Recorder.fm or DAR.fm. If you know what DVR (Digital Video Recording) is, you’re halfway there ? just take it to the internet, and let it record audio instead of video and you have DAR.fm. With the service, you can select the sort of audio you would like to record ? select from a whole list of available radio stations, choose the programs that you want, and just hit record. Go out, do whatever you want, and come home to listen to whatever you recorded with the convenience of doing it on your own time and on whatever device you would like to use (PC, mobile phone, tablet etc) ? the recordings are stored in the cloud so all you really need is internet access. What’s great about DAR is that it will even break recordings down into segments, so you can skip songs as if you were doing it with a music player program on your computer. A great idea from the mind behind MP3.com though you can probably smell the RIAA lawsuits coming his way real soon. Hit the break to check out a video of Robertson presenting his DAR.fm idea at the Launch.is conference:

PlayStation 2 goes portable

Portable PlayStation 2

If you’re a fan of console mods, you’re gonna love this one. A modder from England has recently turned his PlayStation 2 into a portable console. It wasn’t described how or what he did to achieve the mod, but from what we can see, it looks pretty impressive. It’s much too bulky to be brought around everywhere, and the lack of a battery pack basically forbids you from doing so anyway, but when juiced up and loaded with a game, this console runs like any PlayStation 2 should. The modder who did it is looking to sell off the console, so hit the break to watch a video of it in action and if you’re interested, drop him a message to let him know. Now let’s see if Sony takes action against this PlayStation modder.
