EA might charge subscription for universal gamer
profile

Remember that idea from EA Sports about “persistent gamer profiles” or universal profiles where gamers can transfer their old stats, rosters and whatnot over to their new games? It looks like it’s going to become a whole lot less of a dream and a lot more real soon – and it’ll require a subscription.

Pastapadre claims that it’s got the scoop on EA Sport’s new service. Concrete information on how much the service will cost and to what extent data will be able to transferred from old EA Sports games like Madden, NHL, FIFA, etc. to newer copies is still unavailable, but at least we know it’s not just a concept of Peter Moore anymore.

The subscription will reportedly offer “full downloadable versions of participating titles before they come out in stores.”

If this is how EA plans to one up retail with digital distribution, it seems like a good idea. Madden fans are a rabid type and would gladly jump pay a little extra to play a new football game early. At a right price point, EA could in one swoop, usurp every other sports video games.

Microsoft pretends to feel bad for Sonys PSN
downtime, laughs in secret

In light of Sony’s ongoing PlayStation Network issues, including the confirmation that it was shut down because of an external intrusion, Microsoft’s come out to chuckle at Sony.

According to a Microsoft representative:

“Of course it?s regretful that Sony is encountering issues at such a busy time, and Microsoft takes no joy in the problems gamers are having playing their favourite games online.”

The rep goes on to say that Microsoft expects Xbox Live usage to increase as a result.

“That being said, we are expecting Microsoft?s robust online network to see an increase of traffic from those gamers who own both systems. Being able to play their games via the Xbox Live network could make all the difference for some gamers.”

Gamers who are left in the cold as Sony works on re-securing its PSN will likely turn to Xbox Live to get their fix of online gaming. I know there are a lot of Call of Duty: Black Ops addicts out there and waiting for PSN to go back up (which could be days) isn’t going to fly with them.

There’s also a lot of chatter about whether or not Sony should compensate gamers for the PSN downtime. Given that PSN is free, unless you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, Sony’s not really obligated to owe gamers anything. We’ll see how this whole thing ends up. But as of right now Anonymous says it wasn’t them.

Will Resistance use the NGPs camera to pick up
weapons

The NGP has two cameras, one on the front and one on the back. We already know that Sony is going to be pushing a few augmented reality games with the two cameras, but how else can they be used? According to Jolt‘s super ninja Sony sources, in Resistance, players will be able to pick up new weapons they pass by, simply by “passing” their hand or finger on one of the system’s cameras (Jolt says rear cam, but the cam next to the screen looks more accessible to me). It certainly seems do-able: a motion detecting control that could keep the action rolling without lifting more fingers off the dual-analogs and face buttons.

Another use is in Uncharted, where a dark room could be lit up by just aiming the NGP’s rear camera at a light source – be it a lamp or the sun. Sounds like a bright idea, no?

Jolt has yet to prove that it’s a credible news source for leaking information, but if Resistance and Uncharted do use the NGP’s cameras to provide an interesting new layer of control and immersion, then Sony’s device looks to be able to offer more than just a portable PS3-experience.

iPhone 5 could sport radical design change

Former Engadget editor, Joshua Topolsky let loose the dogs on a potential new shift for the iPhone 5 over at ThisIsMyNext. Citing close internal Apple sources, Topolsky says the iPhone 5 will have  3.7-inch screen that reaches edge-to-edge (we’ve hear 4 rumors of a 4-inch screen before), a multitouch gesture-based Home button and a chassis that resembles a teardrop. The body is supposedly tapered – similar to the MacBook Air.

Here’s a mock-up by @CDugD (it’s a mock-up based on rumor, so don’t take it as fact). Topolsky’s report says the iPhone 5 will be thinner than the iPhone 4 (an already anorexic phone). The screen is said to be bonded glass, which would make the LCD thinner. Worried about the Retina Display? His report says the increase in screen size will lead to a drop in pixel density from 326 to 312 pixels per inch, but would still qualify as “Retina Display” (anything over 300 PPI is indiscernable to the naked eye). A 4-inch screen would drop the PPi down to 288, disqualifying it from being RD (we’ve heard the Meizu MX has a 4-inch 960×640 display, but not sure what the PPI on that will be).

As always, please remember this is pure speculation. Sources might have credibility, but whatever Topolsky’s Apple insider might have seen, it could have just been a prototype made to throw people off or created as an experiment for using new materials and forms. Jony Ives loves him some raw materials!

While it’s pretty clear a new iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S won’t be launching until this fall, it’s still fun and exciting to hear what the Cupertino heads are working on. I’m all for thinner (can’t get enough of it), but there’s a certain limit that even Apple will eventually hit in terms of making the iPhone thinner: acceptable radiation levels, juggling long battery life and keeping the device from heating up.

We’ll see in a few months whether or not the iPhone 5 will be completely redesigned or just a spec bump along the lines of the iPhone 3G to 3GS. My bet is Apple will keep the same design as the iPhone 4 and update its A4 to A5 CPU and maybe toss in a better camera that shoots 1080p – maybe.
