Google Glass, the Brin-approved, fashionable (or not) wearable computer still isn’t available to consumers, and it may be another year. If you’re itching to put a tiny screen in front of your retina, you should take a look at Motorola Solutions’ HC1 head-mounted computer. The HC1, which runs Windows CE and is powered by a TI OMAP 3 microprocessor, is practically a bargain at a $4000 asking price. (more…)

Drones are becoming a bigger part of life for those of us in the United States, but those rigs are flown by professionals who are paid to, well, not crash the extremely expensive tools. If you want to do amateur RC helicoptering at home, most experienced hobbyists recommend buying a inexpensive “starter” model, because you’re going to wreck the first RC helicopter you fly. That is, unless you’re flying the Space Ball, a new RC helicopter out of Japan that encloses the rotor mechanism in a flexible, plastic, cage. In Japanese fashion, there’s also a feature that lets you atomize fragrance all around the room with your mini helicopter.

Smartphones are changing the world and making it easier for all kinds of people to access information. Except for blind people, who miss out on several of the aspects of smartphones and touchscreens that make them so cool. Qualcomm, which produces the Snapdragon SoC that powers many Android phones, has built features for blind people that could make life significantly easier for the 285 million visually impaired people worldwide. Qualcomm is calling the software ”Project Ray,” and it features a user interface that’s completely reconsidered from the point of view of a blind person. For instance, a user touches the screen, and that point becomes the starting point for other interactions with the device. The devices also use vibration to provide useful feedback. Currently, the UI can make calls, text with a vocal read-out, and do most social networking. Also, the Central Library for the Blind, Visually Impaired and Handicapped is making a lot of blind-accessible media available for download. Sounds like a good program.
The Project Ray handset is built on top of Android and is currently in testing in Israel.

Ever since the iPhone 5 came out sporting a new 30-pin connector (soon to be added to the iPad) discerning shoppers have been wondering when cheap third party cables were going to hit the market. We think we saw one that lit up, but that’s still at $20, which is the same disappointing price that the official cable retails for. The problem is that Apple’s included a chip in the cable that isn’t cheap. The chip reassigns pins so the cable can be direction agnostic when plugged into a iDevices. However, a leak today to BGR shows that Chinese manufacturers may have cracked the chip, meaning that cheap third party cables can’t be that far away. The photo above shows that multiple clones of Apple’s chip design have been manufactured–even before Apple’s partners have been able to get their offerings to market. Also, note that cables made with these chips are definitely not sanctioned by Apple, and are possibly illegal if they’re not licensed.
So if you’re looking for a second (or third, or fourth) charging cable for your iPhone 5, hold tight. They’re coming soon.

Windows 8 is being released to the masses later this week, and companies are scrambling to get their apps ready for the deluge of users. Skype popped a new version earlier today, and now Hulu has followed suit. Hulu released a Windows 8 app today, so although it would be easy enough to access Hulu through a browser, you can now access Hulu through the Windows 8′s Modern UI. This isn’t simply a case of redudant functionality–the Modern UI app has several features that more than make up for the fact that you’ll have to pay for content that’s available for free through a browser. The Hulu Plus Windows 8 app allows you to use “snap view,” which means you can snap a small video box to the side of your window and work in the other half of your screen. Also, you can pin a favorite show to the Start Menu–so, for instance, you can be reminded that there was a new Daily Show when you boot up your Windows 8 rig.
If you’re already running Windows 8, you early adopter, you can download the Hulu Plus app through the Windows Store now.

With 26 million Americans having chronic kidney disease and almost 100,000 waiting for a kidney transplant, the numbers themselves are rather grim. Although the amount of donors and transplants has risen recently, researchers are still looking for ways to build an organic kidney that could replace defective ones. As a temporary solution, other researchers have looked at creating an artificial kidney that would give more time while waiting for a transplant.
The Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research has successfully built kidney “organoids”. They are not like “whole” kidneys, but they perform the same organic functions – mainly blood filtration. This was done by growing kidney tissues and the hard part was to promote enough blood vessels growth in the new areas so that blood filtering could happen. For now, it works in rats.
This is more an “extension” of the kidney than a replacement, but if it helps performing the function, why not? Although this seems very promising, we’re probably years, if not decades, away from any human medical application. What do you think of the idea of growing a kidney in a lab one day?

Prexiso is a Swiss manufacturer of precision laser sights for surveyors and everyone else who needs to measure things finely and accurately. Now they’ve brough their technology to the iPhone, and also added app functionality. Their previous laser distance measuring tools were handheld, tiny LCD affairs aimed at professionals, but now they’ve made the tape measure look obsolete for consumers.
