My Analysis of Google TVs Ten Foot UI in Nikkei
Electronics

I recently had the opportunity to critique the Logitech Revue’s ten foot UI for Nikkei Electronics, a Japanese trade magazine that “offers prompt reports, to-the-point commentaries and in-depth analysis on advanced technologies.” Phil Keys, US Correspondent for NE, approached me for this project. He wanted an expert opinion on how to build a better interactive [...]

Give your iPhone 4 an aluminum back

iPhone classic sticker
If you’ve been a fan of the iPhone since its introduction, you would probably realize that with each new generation, the materials used for the phone became more and more fragile. Starting from aluminum, it got bumped to plastic, and now it is mostly made of glass. Well the folks over at iStickr have released a new sticker that is a throwback to the days of the old school iPhones ? once stuck on your iPhone 4, it gives it a back made of aluminum. Besides making your iPhone 4 look retro, it protects your phone from scratches, water, and it even has a cut out for the Apple logo to shine through (in addition to the cut outs for the camera lens and flash of course). The Aluminum first gen iPhone 4 Decal can be purchased here for $9.99.

A computer in my eye: the millimeter scale
computer is here

It's really tiny - but somehow still feels too big for my eye ;)

The University of Michigan has announced that it has built a computer so small that it can be implanted in (or around?) the eye of Glaucoma patients to monitor eye pressure. If you’re not familiar with Glaucoma, it’s a disease that causes the pressure in the eye to damage the optic nerve. It can lead to permanent blindness, and it is often hard to monitor because it is (usually) painless. Described as a millimeter-scale computer, the device is about one cubic-millimeter big and consumes only 5.3 nanowatts. The computer has a solar cell that can keep it charged if it is exposed to 1.5 hours of sunlight, or 10 hours of indoor light. It typically wakes up every 15 minutes to measure the eye pressure and should be able to transmit the data wirelessly. This is much more accurate than what most patients get today: one check per week or month.

While Glaucoma is the subject of today’s research by this team, such tiny computers could be used as sensors for a lot of things. We’re not sure about what the computing power is, but it’s got to be really small. The sheer size and the potential is what’s amazing, and this is only the beginning…

PowerColor AX6950 PCS++ Video Card

AMD's new Radeon HD 6900 series occupies the top position in their single-GPU product hierarchy. The two models, the HD 6950 and HD 6970 are very much like the HD 5850 and HD 5870 that they replace. The xx50 cards generally run at a lower clock rate and have a few sections of the GPU disabled, presumably because the vendor is trying to reclaim chips that have a small, isolated manufacturing defect. But what happens when your manufacturing process is so good that you're not producing enough defective chips to meet the market demand? When is a 6950 not a 6950? Well, quite often, as it turns out. In the case of the PowerColor PCS++ Radeon HD 6950 video card, it just depends on which way you flip the switch. Push it one way and you have a standard Radeon HD 6950, with 1408 shaders running at 800 MHz. Push it the other way and you have 1536 shaders running at 880 MHz, which is the exact configuration of the HD 6970. The only difference is that PowerColor kept the 1250 MHz memory chips in the PCS++, instead of springing for the 1500 MHz memory, like a real HD 6970 has. Join Benchmark Reviews as we investigate this unique product from PowerColor, that's sure to cause some excitement in the marketplace.

Lenovo T420: up to 30hrs of battery life

Lenovo T420, T420sLenovo has announced the T420 laptop earlier tonight and while it looks like a regular Lenovo from the outside, the T420 has a unique combination of lightness (<4lbs) and battery life. According to Lenovo, it can hold for up to 30hrs with a secondary battery installed. That’s a unique feature that can be extremely useful to those who absolutely need to be on – far away from a plug.

The other thing that is unique to the T420 model is the noise-canceling functions that can either block the ambient noise, or the keyboard noise. If you’ve been conferencing often enough, you know how annoying it is to hear someone typing heavily on the call :)

As it is the case with other Lenovo computers, the T420 should boot in 30 seconds (at least when it’s new and clean), thanks to the Lenovo Enhanced Experience and optimizations that Lenovo did to its Windows installation.

Motorola Xoom Honeycomb tablet priced on contract

Motorola Xoom

To those folks who don’t feel like shelling out $799 for Motorola’s Honeycomb (Android 3.0) tablet, slated to arrive this Thursday, we have some good news for you. Verizon has officially announced that the Motorola Xoom can be purchased from them at a subsidized price of $599.99 with a 2-year contract on their network. That’s $200 bucks off the tablet’s full price upfront, but in the long run you’ll definitely be paying more for the device. But if you don’t have the $799 on launch day, I guess it’s better than nothing. Or you could always hold out and wait for the WiFi-only version that’s been said to cost $599 unsubsidized, though there hasn’t been any mention to when that will arrive. Anybody out there who has pre-ordered the Motorola Xoom?
