The HTC Thunderbolt was one of the most anticipated smartphone as it is the first handset to use Verizon?s powerful 4G LTE network. Given that Verizon?s 4G had stellar performance in our previous review, we were anxious to see how this would translate to the user experience of a handset. Design-wise, the HTC Thunderbolt is a distant relative of the acclaimed HTC EVO 4G, and a sibling of the HTC Inspire 4G. It has a big, comfortable, 4.3? LCD TFT display and a rear kickstand to hold the phone while watching movies. But despite using the fastest network in the U.S, the Thunderbolt is not equipped with a dual-core processor and a high-end display (OLED, IPS). How does it behave in the real world, and is it for you? Let?s take a look.

Dedicated GPS navigation systems aren’t too popular these days simply because the nature of convergence in devices as well as advances in miniaturization has allowed a GPS chipset to be crammed into something as small as a smartphone, working equally well to boot. Still, Garmin flies the flag for dedicated GPS devices by sending their Garmin nuvi 2575 GPS over to the FCC, from whence we do know that the nuvi 2575 will be accompanied by an analog TV antenna for your mobile TV needs wherever you are, TMC FM traffic data support for real-time traffic updates, an optional Driving Recorder which will see a camera connected to the nuvi 2575, where it will go about recording live video when you drive. The perfect child monitoring tool for parents who cannot bear the thought of their kids growing up. All video can be recorded in high (1280 × 720) and medium (640 × 480) quality settings, and can also be played back on the nuvi 2575 or exported to another device. No idea on its pricing or availability, but having it appear on the FCC means it will hit the markets soon.

Once in a while, a concept comes along that might just move your heart to wish that it will become reality – and the Rollerphone concept is one of them. Taking a look at it, it does seem to be a standard wrist band which projects time in a similar manner to that of the Alessi concept which cropped up nearly two years ago. What makes the Rollerphone so desirable? Well, for starters, it will feature a retractable transparent screen located at the base, sporting perfect ergonomics and anthropometry in design courtesy of its customization ability. To put it plainly, the screen can unfurl to the tip of your fingers in order to give it more or less the perfect fit between the ear and mouth. “Carrying” with it media centre capability as well, you are able to watch videos, chat online, play games, read books and rock on to your favorite tunes on this puppy. Makes us wonder just what kind of super battery this thing runs on – probably a conceptual one as well.

Boxee has stepped forward to announce additional details on an upcoming iPad app, not to mention that there will be an update to the software which runs on the company’s set-top box. Boxee marketing VP Andrew Kippen did confirm rumors which were swirling around earlier that there will be a new tablet app in the pipeline, and if it were to be released (in due time, we hope), then it will keep the iPad 2 company with a spanking new utility. This exclusive utility will let users stream content to a TV via AirPlay, or they can also opt to watch previews of items which are being viewed by friends. Version 1.5 of the Box software is slated to pu tmore focus on browser enhancements, where the direct results of that would be speedier launch times and page loads, not to mention improved support for content coded in Flash, HTML5 or CSS3.

Add to myYahoo!AT&T is prepping another model running Microsoft Windows Phone 7. This won’t be a brand new device though — the HTC HD7S will be a slightly re-branded version of the HD7, an updated version of a high-end model that debuted last year. The earthquake in Japan has clearly moved more than just earth and displaced lives, it has disrupted the world like never before due to globalization and an unprecedented triple whammy of a tsunami and nuclear fallout risk altogether. This has affected many of those in the computing industry, and even Nokia is no exempt as the Finnish company announced that it expects some disruptions to its supply of new cell phones and other devices due to the recent developments. Nokia claims that the disruption was due to the inability of its firms in the Land of the Rising Sun to keep up with delayed shipments, and will require additional resources (which are wanting) to keep up with the pre-earthquake production pace. There is no specific time window as to when production, and life even, will continue at its full pace. This development won’t affect its Q1 2011 results though – which ought to bring some slice of relief to their shareholders.

The FCC must be a pretty fun place to work in as you get all of the unreleased devices to tear apart and peer into their innards, long before the rest of the masses see them on store shelves. The latest device to go through their hands would be a 6? e-book reader that boasts of 3G CDMA/EVDO wireless data capabilities form PocketBook, where it will feature a Wacom touchscreen display that plays nice with the included stylus for note taking purposes. Apart from being an e-book reader first and foremost, it also stocks a Web browser and a news feed reader just in case you want to do some casual surfing on the go – be warned, however, that normally e-book readers don’t make good Web browsers in general due to their relatively weak hardware. There is no word on pricing or availability at press time, but it seems as though the PocketBook 603 will be arriving in the US due to CDMA and EVDO network support.
