Verizon switches to UMTS-based LTE

Verizon switches to UMTS-based LTEFor their next generation network, at least. Verizon will be eschewing EVDO revision C in favor of the GSM Association’s standard that is currently known as 3G LTE (Long Term Evolution). This move is most probably attributed to the fact that Vodafone will be implementing similar technology abroad, and hence the need for a common platform. So far, download rates of 100Mbps and upload rates of 50Mbps have been touted for every 20MHz of spectrum, but bear in mind these are just theoretical figures. Real life performance will definitely be a far cry from the numbers posted here. Take EVDO for example - I tend to get 500kbps on a good day, which is less than 25% of the theoretical 2.1Mbps advantage. This network is expected to go live in 3 to 4 years.

New 3D eyewear from Kopin and SensioKopin and Sensio has teamed up to bring a new set of 3D eyewear to consumers by merging technology found in Kopin's BDM-922K binocular optical engine and Sensio's S3D-220 decoder chip technology. The final device is said to boast full-color, VGA-quality (640 x 480 resolution) video output that gives you the feeling as though you were sitting seven feet away from a virtual 48" display. Alienware sets new record

Alienware sets new record

Alienware computers and notebooks are always at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, that no one can deny. They have done it yet again by releasing the first notebooks that come with massive 320GB hard drives, with the Area 51 m1550 representing the 15.4" segment and the Aurora m9700 and Area 51 m9750 taking honors for the 17" segment. The 17" systems come with dual bays, enabling you to install another 320GB hard drive, bringing the total to a mammoth 640GB. That's around 107 average games for you to tote along - definitely more than you can handle even on a round-the-world flight. Pricing for the Aurora m9700 begin from $1,599 upwards.

Old folks tired of robots

Old folks tired of robotsLooks like older folks grow tired of robots easily, as evident by their feedback after having the $4,300 Ifbot "communication robot" mingling with them at a Kyoto nursing home for about a month. Majority of the elderly see "robots as overly-complicated and unpractical", which goes a long way in denting hopes that robots will be the primary caregivers of the elderly in the future. What's more, it was discovered that old people prefer to have simple things, like a cellphone with large numbers on it. The next time you want to surprise grandpa on his birthday, get him a regular teddy bear and not a flame-throwing Robosapien.

Sneak pic of Asus R3

Sneak pic of Asus R3

Asus has yet another UMPC up their sleeves, and this is known as the R3. You view it horizontally just like how the Sony PSP is viewed, and it does boast GPS navigation so you will be able to find your way around in unfamiliar territory while reading up on the latest reports from the office. Features include a 4.8" display at 1024 x 600 resolution, a Webcam (for video conferencing purposes, presumably), and a fingerprint reader to help secure the data within. The Asus R3 is tipped to ship sometime next year at a yet undisclosed price. Looks like there isn't any physical keyboard on this thing, so be prepared for more touchscreen goodness.

Panasonic goes HD with new camcorders

Panasonic goes HD with new camcorders

Panasonic has unveiled the HDC-SX5 and HDC-SD5 High Definition camcorders that are extremely portable. In fact, the latter has been dubbed the "smallest palm-style 3CCD full HD camcorder in the world". Strangely enough, both devices don't shoot 1080p, which leads me to wonder where the "full HD" compliment comes in. The HDC-SX5 is the cheaper of the two, and comes with a couple of recording choices - SD cards and regular DVDs. As for the slimmer HDC-SD5, it uses only SD memory cards as the storage medium of choice. The Panasonic HDC-SX5 and HDC-SD5 will retail for $900 and $1,000 respectively.

Samsung CX940UX hooks up via USB

Samsung CX940UX hooks up via USB

Samsung has just expanded their Syncmaster LCD monitor range with the CX940UX. This stunning 19" monitor is different from your everyday screens since it hooks up to your computer via USB. While you might have to use up a USB port on your computer with the CX940UX connected, the monitor itself comes with another 2 USB ports to replace your "loss". In addition, the CX940UX will be able to control half a dozen of similar monitors that are connected to your computer without the need for extra graphics cards or drivers. From the looks of it, this would be great for those dealing with stocks as well as graphics artists and DTP users. If USB 2.0 can achieve all this, one can only imagine what USB 3.0 will bring. No word on pricing as at press time.
