Rand McNally is a household name when it comes to mapping and road trip needs, but whatever took them so long to release their first standalone GPS device? Barring the uninspired name (Rand McNally GPS Navigator), this device is extremely portable at 3" x 4.5" x 1.4" and comes filled to the brim with virtually everything you can think off to get back on track. The Rand McNally GPS Navigator holds the distinction of being the first system that comes with both traditional paper and electronic maps. For $499.99, you get pre-loaded maps of the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More features are available after the jump.

Suunto has made its mark as a reliable watchmaker, and the new Suunto t3 is yet another feather in its cap with various features such as a heart-rate monitor, pedometer, and a real-time calories burned read-out. Since most people use their cellphones to tell the time these days, purchasing a watch just for the sake of keeping track of the sands of time would be foolhardy unless you are a watch connoisseur. Make sure you pick up a timepiece that comes with multiple functions not found on the cellphone. The intuitively designed Suunto t3 fits the bill and is available for approximately $170 from Amazon.

Anyone who has just given birth will definitely shun the Nike + iPod kit as that would require one to really pound the pavement. No, new mothers who are recuperating from childbirth and want to get back into shape will do much better with the easy-to-install Strollometer. For $40, the Strollometer comes with a magnetic sensor located on the back wheel which will transmit data to the console wirelessly. You will be able to view a whole bunch of information such as your strolling speed, distance, trip time, and temperature as you and baby spend a little bonding time together. Designed to fit any baby stroller, the Strollometer can be purchased from Amazon.

Inventors have filed a U.S. patent for discs that can store both HD DVD and Blu-ray versions of movies, potentially putting an end to the so-called 'Format War' which has hardly taken off yet. This new disc comes in 3 layers - a standard DVD version, one for HD DVD, and the other for Blu-ray. This bodes well for the casual movie watching consumer as they no longer have to worry about purchasing the 'winning' player, although gamers who are looking into the next generation of consoles might beg to differ. Ultimately, such a disc is a step in the right direction although there could be some concern about costs. What's your take on this people?

Owners of the Xbox 360 console, sit up and take notice! Bring your gaming experience to the next level with the Pioneer HTP-GS1 while your tush remains firmly planted in the Ultimate Game Chair. This 5.1 home theater sound system was designed and developed with the Xbox 360 in mind, making a selected number of HD games play much better. The HTP-GS1 also supports DTS, Dolby Digital, NR, PRO II, and even the MCACC (Multi Channel Acoustic Calibration System). Alternatively, you can hook up your digital audio player to the HTP-GS1 as well although that would rank as overkill.

Take ten 3 point diamonds and embed them around the lens. Gold plate the exterior in 24 karat. All hand-finished, of course. The insides: the Minox DC1011 10.1 megapixel camera, with a 2.5 inch LCD and 3x optical zoom. Minox is near-half owned by Leica (which is owned by Hermès) so it should be good as well as stylish, but diamonds aren't usually so subject to Moore's Law. Of course, next year you could have them popped out and re-set in your cell phone or maybe your shoes. [GT]

Add to myYahoo!I ran across an interesting USB-based technology today that a fellow gadgetblogger posted: it's a battery that's rechargeable via a USB port. TheUSBCell, as it's called, is made bya British company, MoxiaEnergy, and all you have to do is pop the cover on the battery and stick itinto a USB port. Nifty. I do wonder if it suffers from the problems thatconventional rechargeables have, what its lifetime is (max # of recharges),whether it delivers steady voltage, etc.
