Apple patent could give the iPhone and iPad a
display with a private mode toggle

Apple Patent

If you’re one of the many people who get annoyed at people staring at what you do when you’re using your iPhone or iPad in public places, this recently discovered Apple patent will bring a smile to your face. In the patent, Apple describes a technology that would place a “scattering module” behind the screen of a mobile device and wedge-like liquid crystal elements in the screen itself that steer the lights going through the display. When privacy mode is enabled, the cone of light would be narrowed so that only the user of the device who has a head-on view of the device will be able to see what’s on the screen and not somebody who’s looking over your shoulder.

In the patent, Apple didn’t limit themselves to using the technology in just mobile devices, but covered potential cases such as in the car for a driver only display. Apple also didn’t limit the technology to LCD displays, suggesting OLEDs and even carbon nanotube screens as possible displays it would work with. As usual, with all patents, they are by no means solid evidence that a company is going to use them in the future. But this privacy mode toggle screen sure sounds like a nifty feature to have especially if you have to read confidential documents while on the train.

Panasonic shows off solar-powered wireless
charger table

Panasonic Solar wireless charging table

How nice would it be to just dump all your stuff from your pockets onto your table at home after a long day at work, and the ability to wake up the next day without worrying whether your devices have been charged or not because you forgot to plug them in last night? Well, in the future, we might just be able to do so.

The folks over at Panasonic recently showed off a prototype table that lets you charge your phone or any device with a Qi battery by just placing it on the table. While we already have many induction-based chargers available on the market, what makes this table different from those chargers is that it gets the energy to juice up your devices by using solar panels.

Acturus: the tiny drone plane capable of not so
tiny destruction

Acturus

The folks over at the Acturus company recently built a new tiny spy plane drone, called Acturus, that’s the unmanned equivalent of a compact car. It features a wingspan of a bit over 17 feet and weighs only 100-pounds.

While Acturus’ primary purpose is to act as a spy plane, the Acturus company have managed to outfit it with a Saber ? a 10lbs laser-guided missile. This makes the drone plane capable of more than just a little destruction. According to one of the engineers behind the creation of the plane, “No one else can do that in our size category.”

Designed for primarily for commandos, the Acturus can be easily dismantled for portability and has camo painting to stay hidden while it’s not in the sky. The Acturus planes are currently being evaluated by the Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force now, but if they do get the green light, it’s going to change the whole face of modern warfare. Think AR.drone battles ? but with real explosions instead.

Apple employees told to neither deny nor confirm
presence of Mac Defender malware

Mac OS X virusYesterday we reported about the Mac Defender malware that has been making its rounds on Apple’s seemingly invincible Mac OS X operating system, and now we have an interesting follow up to the situation. It seems that Apple are treating the whole situation lightly. According to a report from Ed Bott of ZDnet, who got his hands on a leaked internal document, Apple has informed its employees to neither confirm nor deny the presence of any malware, nor should they attempt to fix the problem.

Now it’s one thing to dismiss malware because most of it has been designed to attack Windows, but when one shows up on Mac OS X and is made known to the public ? it becomes quite insulting to the consumers when Apple chooses to ignore the issue rather than step up to the plate. It’s as if they believe that by ignoring it, it will go away.
