It's a power strip and surge protector that very simply detects whether or not the devices you have plugged in to it are actually on or not and stops drawing power from the wall. I immediately thought of a great application for this: my spare laptop power adapter that I like to leave plugged in to the wall outlet, so I can quickly plug into my laptop to juice it back up. Immediate power and money savings. Just in case you've got devices that you need/want to leave on permanently (and we all do!), just plug it in to the red outlets.
