Good news physical media haters. SCEE’s bigwig, Andrew House says that digital versions of retail NGP games will be simultaneously released on game launch days – a lesson Sony’s apparently learned from the failure that was the PSP Go. At the launch of the PSP Go, Sony promised same day digital game releases in its PlayStation Store. Instead, digital releases of games such as Phantasy Star Portable 2 were hammered by delays, leaving eagerly awaiting gamers to just give up and buy a UMD copy. As digital distribution plays a larger role in content distribution (just look at Apple’s App Store), it’ll be important for Sony to balance out retail and digital. Sony’s gone on record before stating that there are complicated legalities that keep digital releases from seeing simultaneous releases alongside retail, but we’re hoping Sony’s managed to expedite the process for the NGP. If Sony actually pulls through on its promise of same day digital copy availability ? in all global regions, NGP gamers will have plenty to cheer for.

It’s official, AT&T has announced that it was acquiring T-Mobile USA for $39B, adding 33M customers in one fell swoop. The combined entity will therefore have about 129M subscribers. This deal makes a lot more sense than the rumored Sprint+T-Mobile deal that we called “a marriage from hell” earlier this month.
Both networks are using GSM as the basic building block, so the network consolidation should be relatively easy and transparent to T-Mobile users. Deutsche Telecom, the parent company will have an 8% stake in AT&T – if the deal is approved by the government. The good news for T-Mobile users is that they will gain access to the iPhone and eventually to AT&T’s 4G LTE network (whenever it will be ready). The bad news is that you can forget about that unlock code that T-Mobile was giving away on request. AT&T always had a tough policy on network unlocking. Is this good for consumers? Probably not… [press release]

If you have updated your iDevice (that would mean the iPod, iPhone or iPad) to iOS 4.3, chances are pretty good you would have noticed that the battery life isn’t what it used to be. That might sound like bad news to you folks out there, but it isn’t all doom and gloom, you know – there is a workaround to “solve” this situation, and it will involve disabling Ping for a noticeable jump in your device?s battery capabilities, as it is restored to what it is before the latest update. Turning off Ping is pretty simple, just head on to Settings, choose General > Restrictions, click on Enable Restrictions, enter a new pincode, and last but not least, Disable Ping. Make sure that the switch is clicked so that it ends up as a shade of blue grey. This will result in you sacrificing social music recommendation on your device, but we don’t suppose that’s the price you’re willing to pay for superior battery life?

Social network users in Europe will be pleased to know that the European Union (EU) will be enshrining a “right to be forgotten online“, making sure that prospective employers are unable to check out previously uploaded Facebook photos of a user who is in a compromising situation that might affect the outcome of a particular job interview. EU justice commissioner, Viviane Reding, mentioned in a speech to the European parliament, that “a US-based social network company that has millions of active users in Europe needs to comply with EU rules.” This means that high standards of data privacy in the default setting is mandatory, as well as providing the user more control over the type of data displayed. We would want to chip in our two cents’ worth into the entire situation – in the first place, if you’re uncomfortable with what you upload should others stumble upon it – don’t. That’s the best rule of thumb to avoid any regrets down the road…
