HTC has revealed two new phones at its New York City event. Among them is the HTC Windows Phone 8 X, which is HTC’s flagship Windows phone.
The HTC Windows Phone 8 X comes with many of the same guts that delighted us when we reviewed the One X, including the same beautiful 720p super LCD 2 display, which produces rich colors and deep blacks. A team of researchers lead by Gilles-Eric SÚralini (University of Caen/France) has secretly (to avoid industry pressure) studied the effects of genetically modified (GM) corn on 200 rats, and the team of scientists have shown that 50%-80% of those rats develop tumors/cancers in less than one year, compared to 30% for those that were fed with something else. For comparison, one “rat year” is about 40 “human” years. The study also look at the interaction between herbicides and the enzymes introduced in GM foods. The research has been published by the American journal American journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology. (more…)By Ubergizmo. We did see a quad-core powered ZTE Grand Era U985 smartphone late yesterday evening, but that smartphone does seem to be headed only for China. The thing is, ZTE seems to be pursuing after a larger market share in the smartphone industry, with word that there are solid plans to roll out a Mozilla phone sometime early next year, at least according to the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
The Wall Street Journal claims that ZTE is in cahoots with Mozilla so that they will be able to better diversify their product range and not rely too much on Android and Windows Phone as their mobile operating system crutches. Apparently, ZTE is in partnership with “a regional telecom carrier outside of China”, which is not too surprising considering how Mozilla did announce their fair share of tie-ins with Telefonica and Sprint when you roll the clock back.
The Mozilla phone OS will most probably run an HTML-based platform, although it should not compromise on performance in order to keep up with the rest of the mobile operating system pack. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phablet was announced at the end of last month, and today, we have word on its official availability to at least five different carriers in the US; namely AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular by the time mid-November rolls around. If you are interested in pricing details, be prepared to be disappointed as that depends on the carrier whom you are going to hook up with, while retail availability will also be announced by the carriers themselves.
Since the Galaxy Note 2 is optimized to run on a 4G LTE network (as well as HSPA+ 42 networks), you can be sure that carriers that support 4G LTE will definitely want to have this under their fold to attract more customers. Just how much are you willing to pay for the Galaxy Note 2, or do you feel that your original Galaxy Note is good enough to last you for at least another year? It does seem, however, that the Galaxy Note 2 for Verizon will come with a locked bootloader.
We received word from US Cellular that they will be carrying the 16GB Titanium Gray model for $299.99, where it will come with an instant rebate if you place a pre-order, waiting for it to roll out in stores at the end of October, which is slightly earlier than the above mentioned general November release. Sprint will offer it in Marble White and Titanium Gray though. [Press Release]By Ubergizmo.
