Synergise system helps wheelchair users navigate
tricky terrain situations

Getting around on a wheelchair is a snap with the right infrastructure in place, but there are moments when local council guidelines for the disabled are not followed, making it inconvenient and downright tricky for one to navigate around. Patrick Hyland, a London-based designer, has come up with what he calls the ?Synergise?, a mechanical system that enables wheelchair users to negotiate commonly faced issues such as cambered surfaces. Cambered surfaces tend to affect propulsion as since the wheelchair will naturally veer towards the road through the force of gravity alone, requiring the user to brake on one side while propelling the other, affecting the momentum as well as leading to a higher energy consumption level. In a nutshell, covering a certain distance would make it twice as taxing compared to the energy used by able-bodied people who travel the same distance.

Synergise intends to put an end to that, as it enables wheelchair users to negotiate angled surfaces without expending too much energy, not to mention reducing the risks of RSI (repetitive strain injury) in the process. Hopefully the Synergise system will be able to enter mass production as soon as possible.

Sharp photocopier makes short work of bacteria
with Plasma-cluster Ion technology

Some of us might be familiar with Sharp?s Plasma-cluster Ion technology which can be found in their range of refrigerators, humidifiers, and washing machines amongst others, which is touted to turn the air around that particular piece of consumer electronics sterile, which results in nasty bacteria dying so that one has cleaner and purer air to breathe. Good thing this patented technology has now arrived on their new range of office photocopiers which will sport a rather hefty Plasma-cluster ion emitting unit that is affixed to the top.

According to Sharp, their marketing pitch goes something like this, ?Because the workplace is where people spend so much of their time, we want to devote our energy to improving the quality of their air they breathe.? Hmmm, I am not quite sure how many folks got sick hanging around the photocopier machine while carrying out a conversation, but you can never be too paranoid, can you?

US Army tests female body armor in Afghanistan

Sometime in July earlier this year, we ran a story on how the US Army was working on a new body armor that was specially developed to fit the female body, which is definitely a good idea since the male and female physiological make-up are different in their own unique ways. Having said that, female soldiers from Fort Campbell who are deploying to Afghanistan will have the honor of field testing the first Army body armor which was specially tailored to fit women?s physiques, being shorter in nature.

The latest generation of female-centric Army tactical vests is shorter in length so that it can accommodate smaller torsos, while being tailored to fit closer to women’s chests. It will also do away with the gaps between the material and the body, where it can be fitted with smaller side ballistic inserts for small waist sizes. Not only that, it feels lighter since it will not rest on the female soldier’s shoulders, unlike the male counterpart. In fact, one is able to perform a cartwheel in this without having the body armor fall right off, which is something that could happen if a female were to wear the old armor.

iPhone 5 shipping date delayed to 3-4 weeks

Less than a week ago, we reported that the iPhone 5?s pre-order shipping times had slipped to 1-2 weeks, no doubt due to the fact that the iPhone 5?s pre-order of 2 million units were sold out in record time. Well, it seems that those of you who placed a pre-order for your iPhone 5 recently might be disappointed to know that shipping times had been further pushed back to 3-4 weeks, meaning you will still be able to enjoy some iOS 6 goodness on-the-go right before Halloween. Sounds crazy, doesn?t it? Well, at least those folks who are lining up for the new iPhone 5 at least four days before the official release at the Apple Store in New York City might not have lost their marbles after all. Do you mind waiting for an additional two more weeks for your iPhone 5?

LG Optimus G more details preview with videos

video details and more

Yesterday, I was at the LG Optimus G launch event in Seoul and I could briefly play with a unit and post a hands -on. This morning, the LG flagship smartphone was launched in the US at a press conference in New-York.

I finally got the time to shoot additional photos of the Optimus G white version, which is the model I prefer.  So far, I am really impressed by the unit I played with, the unibody design is sleek and elegant, with a great build quality that encloses powerful performance.

LG is pushing hard its software differentiation by emphasizing its ?unique user experience?, which is supported by a set of custom user interface features. Some people are not really fan of Google mobile OS customization since it  increases the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem, however, I found LG innovations very interesting, pleasing to the eyes and practical.

See the demo video above, another one is available in the full post with a detailed explanation. More information about the Optimus G in the full post.

HTC Windows Phone 8X preview

We’ve been covering the HTC launch event live on Ubergizmo, and now we’ve had a little bit of hands-on time with both phones, including the Windows Phone 8X, which is the device announced today with the most exciting features and specs. At the event, HTC  emphasized ”hero devices,” high end devices that generate buzz. There’s no mistaking the lower- end 8S for a flagship, so that leaves the 8X as HTC’s Windows “hero phone.”

We knew that the Windows Phone 8X would have an unusual industrial design, but when we got our hands on it, we realized that in person it looks much more unique than in preview pictures. This is a quality phone, and the unibody construction was a good design decision. The back is a durable either polycarbonate that’s covered in a grippy rubber. This polycarbonate comes in four different colors, which look really great. Usually, colored phones are a bit garish, but HTC’s designers did a great job matching the colors to Microsoft’s color scheme.

At HTC’s event, it really emphasized the Beats software and partnership, most likely because of its $300 million aquisition, but I’m not sure how much consumers will notice. The onboard speakers are decent and sounded loud, but nothing extraordinary, and neither device announced today–even the “hero device,” the 8X– doesn’t come with Beats Headphones. Although it’s been said before, the Beats tie-in is simply an improved equalizer, and mostly marketing speak. However, the 8X does have a built-in headphone and speaker amplifier, but we’ll have to try it out with some nice headphones to really do a solid evaluation.

HTC has touted a new “sandwich” construction, where the battery is packed between the screen and the components. HTC claims this allows the 8X to be as skinny as possible, and at least at a visceral level, the 8X does feel like  a slim phone. However, this means that the battery is extremely non-user replaceable. Sure, iPhones don’t have user replaceable batteries, but Apple also has great infrastructure–HTC doesn’t have stores. People who like to hang on to phones for years may have trouble with the battery in later years.

The camera module and image chip are the same as the One X, so photo quality should be about as good as that phone’s excellent camera. Also, HTC upgraded the front camera with a wide-angle lens, ostensibly for people who love to take self-shots with a camera meant for videoconferencing.

HTC Windows Phone 8S Finally Arrives

HTC Windows Phone 8S on the right in white and red

At its NYC event today, HTC released two phones running on Microsoft Windows Phone 8. Among them is the HTC Windows Phone 8S, which is a middle-market device intended for first-time smartphone buyers and those looking to get into Windows Phone without purchasing a high-end device. Windows Phone 7 always had a plethora of devices that weren’t high-end, but were very nice, and the HTC Windows Phone One S carries that banner.  (more…)
