For those of you who take the public transport (for various reasons), then here is something from John Graham-Cumming that might just carve a smile on your face. We are talking about an ambient bus arrival monitor which was constructed from a hacked Linksys wireless router, where it is capable of retrieving data from London?s Countdown service, informing one just how much longer one needs to wait until the next ride comes along. Definitely worth having right in front of your work desk, as you can then estimate just when you are going to wrap up the day’s work at your desk before heading home. This particular project seems to be usable by the average programmer, and I guess you can always apply the same principle to just about any exterior form factor, be it a train, plane or ship.

There are whispers going around that Sprint might be rolling out the HTC One X this coming June 10th, and so far, the smartphone has also been give the codename “HTC Jet”. Of course, there was no direct connection between the HTC Jet and the HTC One X, but all of the specifications between the two so far have always lined up with each other without missing a beat. Both smartphones rely on the Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor that has NFC capabilities, and this makes it easier to arrive at the same conclusion. Other specifications include 1GB RAM, a 4.7″ touchscreen display with Gorilla Glass 2, and LTE connectivity. I guess it will be a toss up between the Galaxy Nexus or the HTC One X if Sprint is going to release them in the near future. Which smartphone model will you prefer to have in your pocket? I suppose those who want a speedy camera can always wait for the HTC One X…

Yes, we do know that the Nokia Lumia 610 comes with WiFi hotspot capability, in addition to the Lumia 710, 800 and 900 receiving tethering capability as well. Having said that, here is the Nokia Lumia 719 which was captured as a spy shot, where the smartphone is said to make its way to the Asian and American markets. Using the powers of deduction, the model number itself places it higher than the current Nokia Lumia 710 in the smartphone hierarchy from Nokia. Sporting a seemingly basic design, the Nokia Lumia 719 does seem to be thinner compared to the Lumia 710, and the physical keys remain right below the display. Word on the street has it that the smartphone will feature a 3.7″ AMOLED display complete with Nokia’s Clear Black technology, and a 5-megapixel shooter that is capable of capturing video in High Definition. No idea on pricing, but it is tipped that the Nokia Lumia 719 will be announced in China officially this coming March 28th.

There are two major camps in the tablet market at the moment – the iPad from Apple, as well as Android-powered ones. There is the strong possibility of a third contender soon though, Windows 8 from Microsoft. Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of design has confirmed that Nokia is already working on a new tablet device which will run on the Windows 8 operating system, but here is news for Lenovo fans – the company also has plans concerning Microsoft’s upcoming operating system. Reports are making their way across the Internet, with whispers going around that Lenovo intends to be the first in the market to deliver a Windows 8-powered tablet. In fact, Lenovo’s management believes that the operating system itself will be shipped this coming October, and Lenovo wants to greet that particular operating system “wave” by riding on it. It would be interesting to see just how a new operating system in the tablet scene will change the dynamics of competition. Will you be curious enough to give a Windows 8-powered tablet a go?

I am not quite sure just how many people use Mozilla’s Thunderbird email client any more these days, but Mozilla has continued to support this particular software by upgrading it to version 11. The update will focus mostly on a range of bug fixes, where the user interface in the email software has been changed – all the tabs have been moved over to the top of the page. Apart from that, Mozilla purposely introduced this change so that developers of third party applications for Thunderbird are able to have more “fun” with Thunderbird. Not only that, Mozilla has plans for future updates for Thunderbird that will see instant messaging support introduced within the email client, and is meant to integrate email and instant messages. Sounds just like Gmail, no? I guess if you cannot beat ‘em, just join ‘em. After all, it makes sense to take the best of what the competition has to offer and work on carving out your own “signature” features which are properly aligned.

Consumer electronics devices have one particular issue that has yet to be resolved – heat. The new iPad is not exempt from this phenomenon either, but it seems that over the weekend, there were reports coming in that the new iPad has had its fair share of heat problems. So far, user forum postings as well as a report sees a bunch of users suffering from a hotspot that is located in the lower left corner of the new iPad. In fact, the worst case scenario involved the entire iPad shutting down, while a message pops up to inform the user that “the iPad needs to cool down” – you don’t say? (more…)
