In case you didn’t already know, one of the best ways to improve in something is to measure your performance. This is why we have tons of equipment and apps we have on our smartphones to help us keep track of our progress. When you know what your last “score” was, you have a target to achieve or surpass, hence the importance of measurement. Nike knows this and has added yet another device to its lineup of health-related devices: the Nike+ FuelBand.

Earlier today, Microsoft has announced its earnings which have met investors expectations, at least when it comes to the overall revenues and profits. Some reports have been dramatizing the 6% drop of the Windows business, but it is probably due to the Thailand floods that have slowed down hard disk and other critical PC components, thus slowing the PC market in general.
Interestingly, the Gaming and Servers divisions did very well. It’s not a surprise given that Xbox and Kinect have been top sellers, and despite all the fact that most “cloud” players prefer using LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP), Microsoft continues to grow quickly in the server space.
Now, I wonder how much Microsoft made from those Android royalties that it is getting from HTC, Samsung, Quanta, Compal, ViewSonic, Pantech and many others. While we know that at some point last year those royalties were larger than the Windows Phone business, we don’t know the exact amount. In the grand scheme of things, the Android-related royalties would probably not make that big of a difference for Microsoft, but it should still be a considerable amount in absolute terms.

Just as expected, the Verizon LG Spectrum just went up for sale today and it is LG’s most interesting smartphone at the moment. It pitched (and priced) by Verizon as a true high-end smartphone, and and the paper, it should perform well. Its main feature is a large 4.5″ 720p (1280×720) IPS display but on the inside, it is powered by a dual-core SnapDragon S3 processor running at 1.5GHz. Of course, it’s a Verizon LTE phone which comes with a sizeable 1830mAh battery.
Out of the box, there is 16GB of user storage, and 1GB of RAM for applications. The cameras specs also look good: 8 Megapixel, 1080p video recording. In the front, there is a 720p camera for video calls. Of course, those numbers are just an indication and don’t actually mean much until we’ve put it to the test, so stay tuned.
Note that Bluetooth is “only” 3.0 – that’s too bad because BT 4.0 uses much less power in standby mode, so that would be a big deal for those of you who like to use a headset at all times. Finally, this phone runs Android 2.3, and there is no official word on when (or if) it will be upgraded to Android 4.0 shortly. [official homepage]

If you’re bored of large, flat, touchscreen displays, the folks over at DISPLAX have got something for you: a Multitouch Globe. Just like its name describes ? it is a huge multitouch surface that is in the shape of a globe. The Multitouch Globe has a diameter of 1 meter (40 feet), and supports multiple touch points. Users interact with it just like they would interact with any other multitouch display, with the added benefit of a more natural feel when it comes to certain implementations i.e. looking at a map of the world.
