OLEDs with solar charging capability

OLEDs with solar charging capability

Cornell University researchers have managed to build OLEDs that function like solar panels while retaining all the qualities and functionality of an OLED, including being thin and flexible. The researchers used reverse engineering to turn light back into electricity in the OLED itself. The very idea bodes well for a plethora of electrical goodies such as cellphones, digital cameras, and portable media players as they can recharge themselves when idle. Of course, such technology is currently in its zygote state, so it will take a fair amount of time before something commercially viable can be produced.

Battery in Zune falls short

Battery in Zune falls short
Things do not seem to look up for Microsoft's upcoming Zune portable media player. Reports show that the Zune's battery is good for 12 hours of audio and 3.5 hours of video, and these numbers are a wee bit lesser compared to Apple's 30GB iPod which offers an extra 2 hours of music and 30 minutes of video in comparison. The larger LCD display and WiFi would seem to be the main culprit. Will any of you iPod owners out there purchase a Zune when it is released? Hopefully Microsoft's Zune will not have a shelf life that is as short as its battery life.
