The iPad 2 and tablets in general are very versatile devices, allowing users to pretty much use them for anything ? from playing games to watching movies and reading books, as well as controlling your DVR. In addition to those regular “home” activities, some folks even bring their tablets to help them out in the kitchen. Sure it’s great that you can have access to all your favorite recipes while in the kitchen, but what happens when your hands are covered with ingredients or just too dirty to touch your tablet without making a mess?

Well, Ruth Reichl has come up with a solution to the problem ? an app that lets you flip its pages without touching the screen. How does it work? First thing that came to mind would have been voice commands, but this app takes it a step further ? it detects your hand movements using the iPad 2′s front facing camera. That way you can easily turn the pages of the recipe book without having to stain the screen with food or leave it smelling like fish. Pretty ingenious if you ask me. The fact that it doesn’t use voice activation means that you’ll be able to sing at the top of your lungs while cooking and you won’t accidentally trigger any commands. Reichl’s app isn’t released yet, but stay tuned for more details and we’ll let you know when it does.

Future cars can talk to one another

Ever wished you could telepathically send your angry thoughts over to the driver who just cut into your lane suddenly without any warning? Unless you decide to get into a fit of road rage and throw caution to the wind, the best remedy would be to calm down and wish the other party well – who knows, he/she might be in a hurry, but either way, it would be good for your overall well being not to get too upset. Well, all that might change in the future as cars down the road might be able to “talk” to each other – as early as 2014 in fact, while alerting other cars who share the road concerning traffic, accidents that just happened or even the fact that there is an ambulance on the way.

DRY-ALL helps make your wet phones work again

If you dropped your phone in water and you think that it may never work again, don’t fret. A solution is here. The folks over at DRY-ALL have come up with a product called the Wet Cell Phone Emergency Kit. Touted to have a 100% success rate (when all instructions are followed) it sure sounds like a fantastic product. In case you were wondering what sort of trickery this product is, it’s basically a bag that absorbs all the moisture from a phone quickly ? with the end result being as if the phone didn’t enter water in the first place.

According to the demonstration video, all users have to do is remove the battery, wipe the phone dry and place it into the bag which is sealed up and then left alone for a period of time. After the phone is done drying, users can just take it out of the bag, replace the battery and cover, and they’re ready to use the phone again.

Originally designed to protect moisture sensitive military equipment, it looks like its creators have found a more consumer-friendly approach to selling the product. Superdog Cairo had $30,000 worth of equipment
during Bin Laden mission

Fancy a dog having a more expensive outfit than some celebrities out there with all their long dresses and handbags – that is exactly what Cairo, the dog who worked with Navy SEALs during their recent raid in Pakistan, had. No idea on Cairo’s breed, but we have word that the body armor worn during the mission cost somewhere from $30,000 onwards, making Cairo bulletproof and legitimately protected from unexpected attacks on his body.

The body armor was developed by K9 Storm of Canada, where their flagship product is the $20,000-$30,000 Intruder, sporting a high-definition camera that is mounted on the dog’s back. This will help the handler check out whatever is happening from the dog’s point of view, and the camera is smart enough to switch to night vision automatically when it goes all dark. Apart from that, the camera lens is one tough puppy (is it Gorilla Glass?), being impact-resistant and waterproof.

Pantech Vega Racer is ready to rock and roll

Tablets are clearly forming quite the formidable market to exploit – nay, build upon by manufacturers who want a slice of the pie. After all, with Google promising to solve the Android fragmentation problem with an upcoming Android operating system version, things would look up as the bridge between the tablet and the touchscreen smartphone draws nearer to one another. In the meantime, we will just have to sit tight and see what other kinds of tablets that will be pushed out – and see the kind of smartphone which the Pantech Vega Racer is made out of.

Potentially being the world?s first 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon handset when released in Korea later this month, it will arrive via SK-Telekom, rocking to the Qualcomm MSM8660 processor with an Adreno 220 GPU and 1GB RAM. All those clearly point to high end specifications, but isn’t a dual-core processor at 1.5GHz overkill at the moment? Imagine the kind of battery life this handset will have, good thing it isn’t going to connect via 4G/LTE, otherwise the battery drain would be made much worse.

LG to release Optimus 2X patch

As reported by quite a number of early adopters, the LG Optimus 2X seems to be plagued by a number of annoying issues such as random reboots and shutdowns. There hasn’t been an explanation to why all these problems are happening, but LG has confirmed that they happen when users hit the power button whenever it is charging or when the phone is on standby mode. In addition to the fix for the random restarts, it wasn’t mentioned what else would be part of the update.

The update will begin rolling out in Europe this week, and North America next. Hopefully this also means that the LG G2X will be getting it too. Any Optimus 2X users waiting for the patch? Let us know if you receive it and tell us how it works out for you. Surprisingly, this wasn’t an issue that we noticed with our LG Optimus 2X review unit when we were testing it out.

Unnamed webOS devices spotted

A webOS developer (a forum member of PalmPre France as well) actually managed to uncover new and upcoming machines that HP had been testing – in secret. Among them would be a HP TochPad with a physical keyboard in a log that was dated April 14th, where it sports an unannounced version of the webOS with the codename Nova Dartfish, sporting a 1,024 x 768 resolution for its display. The inclusion of a physical keyboard and yet not in a slider version could only mean one thing – either it is a very, very large BlackBerry-like form factor, or it will be a foldable model. No swappable battery for this model, so forget about bringing around an extra battery if you think you’re going to be spending plenty of time with it.

Pleo goes naked before the FCC

The folks over at the FCC must be rubbing their hands in glee as they take apart the Pleo. Yes, that robotic dinosaur that is said to be so lifelike (at least where a robotic toy is concerned to date) that it has captivated all 10 kids out there. Well, the original Pleo might have all the snazzy electronics inside, but it failed to deliver on the sales front, ending its shelf life rather abruptly. Good thing there is this thing called resurrection, as the fleshy robot appeared at CES 2011 earlier this year under the guise of Pleo RB, with the suffix standing for “Reborn”, thanks to adopted manufacturer Innvo Labs.
