RIM to launch BlackBerry music service

While RIM’s BlackBerry market share might be on its way downhill, it’s not too late for RIM to make amends while it still can. In order to capture a larger market beyond the enterprise sector it’s so familiar with, it looks like the company is going to take some drastic measures to appeal to a wider audience. CNET has reported that according to its sources, RIM will be launching a new music service.

Apparently RIM is negotiating contracts with the four major record labels in the US with at least one of them already onboard and two more close to finalizing the deal. There’s no word on how the service is going to work, but it’s said to run on top of BBM. All shall be revealed in a few weeks, as the BlackBerry music service should have launched by then ? assuming CNET’s sources on the matter are correct. What do you think of these rumors? Does RIM need a music service to capture its audience or should music be least of its concern?

HP Terminates WebOS Devices

In the wake of slow sales of WebOS devices, HP has announced that it is terminating its line of WebOS devices, which includes the TouchPad Tablet and the smartphones. HP has announced this as it revealed its quarterly revenue of $32.2 Billion, up slightly when compared to last year.

If there’s one thing to take away from this announcement, it is this: competing in the hardware space is extremely tough and even giants like HP sometime have to throw the towel. As an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), procurement and purchasing power is as important as the design and technology behind the product.

Among other carriers, AT&T is partnering with GOGII, the maker of textPlus, and application that enables free and unlimited SMS (in the U.S and Canada) for devices that normally don’t have access to SMS. The communications are paid for by sponsors or advertisers. This means that WIFI-only devices like iOS (iPod touch, iPhone) and Android tablets and MP3 players can get a phone number by which they can receive SMS text messages via textPlus.

This application goes beyond traditional texting and adds the notion of Group texting and also offers a social aspect as you can search for friends. Interestingly, it application is also available to 3G devices. It may be interesting to see if 3G-device users will download the app to get free SMS.

In any case, we trust that in the final analysis, AT&T will make more money as this expands the SMS market, and because SMS has amazing gross margins. What do you think of using SMS on non-phone devices?
