Aritifical Ears Improve Hearing

Aritifical Ears Improve Hearing

Boffins at Northwestern Medical School recently concluded that ear prosthesis is able to increase apparent audio quality to a level that helps improve speech recognition in noisy environments, after studying eight different silicone rubber prostheses.

Auricular prostheses provide an acoustic gain at certain head positions and frequencies, and this acoustic gain is clinically relevant because it benefits speech recognition in noise. In some individuals, auricular prostheses not only effectively restore aesthetics but also may improve hearing. To verify the results of the present experiments, the main outcome measures described in this study will be used to obtain future measurements from individuals who wear auricular prostheses.

Sounds (no pun intended) as though I myself should get a pair of prosthetic ears, since my other half keeps on complaining that I don't seem to listen to what she says!

Lenovo Goes Green With New Monitors

Lenovo Goes Green With New Monitors

Lenovo knows that being green is the new buzzword, and hence have released a slew of new monitors that aim to keep Mother Nature and Greenpeace activists happy. First off we have the 17" L1700p that consumes 30% less juice and has 50% less mercury compared to standard models, while the L1940 shares the same benefits with a rated power usage of 16W at minimum and 23W at maximum - pretty impressive for a 19" display. Guess the 33% less power and 50% less mercury is a recurring theme in this new range, with the L2240p and L2440x following suit despite being larger in size. All these new monitors are EnergyStar 4.0-compliant and stand at EPEAT-Gold level status.

Lego NXT Wall-E

Wall-E's a truly memorable film IMHO, and I guess it was just a matter of time before somebody made a Lego version out of this cheeky little robot. Built using a Lego NXT kit, this cute little bugger is definitely a geek's wet dream come true, and it really boggles the mind to see how a bunch of bricks and some electronics wizardry can result in something so vivid and animated. What else would you like to see get the Lego treatment, Transformers?

Zune Gets New Colors

Zune Gets New Colors

Just in case the world goes by without realizing it, Microsoft has quietly slipped in Zunes that come in new shades, including white as well as a blue Zune 120. I suppose it was Apple who made white look sexy on gadgets - hopefully the plastic quality used to make these new Zunes will hold out long enough to prevent the white from turning yellow in a few years' time. Will there even be Zunes around by then?

Onda VX525 Now Available

Onda VX525 Now Available

Onda's VX525 might resemble an iPhone at first glance, but savvy readers will realize that this is no phone but a plain portable media player instead. Still, the asking price of $44 is pretty unbelievable considering the VX525 is equipped with the following :-

With a battery that lasts for up to 15 hours of non-stop audio playback, the VX525 looks like a pretty solid bargain.

Nokia Working On New Internet Tablet

Nokia Working On New Internet Tablet

Granted, Internet tablets never really caught on with the masses as it is much more comfortable surfing with a featherweight netbook, but that isn't stopping Nokia from working on a next generation Internet tablet which will rely on the N810 as its reference. Nokia aims to include 3G connectivity, a speedier Ti OMAP3 processor and an integrated high definition operating system (no idea what that constitutes - anyone care to help out here?). Hopefully they mean an operating system that is capable of handling high definition video with ease. What else would you like to see in an Internet tablet? There is no deadline imposed by Nokia to release this device, hopefully it doesn't end up like the Palm Foleo.

Fake NAND Flash Shows Up

Fake NAND Flash Shows Up

China's pretty notorious for their range of fakes and clones when it comes to consumer electronics, so it isn't surprising to read about fake NAND flash being branded as Samsung chips and sold as bulk from China. Majority of these fake products are carefully packaged as finished products from a myriad of branded vendors, but opening it up and you might even be greeted with a missing die. These fake chips are sold at rock bottom prices and have done a dis-service to market orders for legit memory chips in China. Couple that with an already beleaguered NAND flash market worldwide, we won't see any recovery in this industry at least for a while.

Kenwood CD Receivers Launched

Kenwood CD Receivers Launched

Kenwood has a couple of CD receivers in the offing, and they are the DPX503 and DPX303. The DPX503 is said to feature a large multi-line display with full-spectrum variable illumination that is definitely worth a second look, including an illuminated front Aux input and USB port with 1-wire high-speed iPod control. The 1-wire iPod control lets users control their iPods directly from the receiver itself as long as it is connected via USB to Apple's portable media player. As for the DPX303 Double DIN CD receiver, you get a large fine-dot display with four lines of text and a large multi-control wheel for quick and easy music search. It relies on an illuminated front auxiliary input to connect to iPods and compatible devices. There is no word on pricing though.

Japan Develops Even Faster Train

Japan Develops Even Faster Train

Getting around Japan is pretty fast and convenient thanks to their myriad of bullet trains and rail lines, and this time round they're pushing for even faster trains thanks to Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Touted to be the country's fastest train, this latest model will ferry people to their destinations at speeds of up to 217mph, which is significantly faster than the previous king of the hill model that ambled along at 186mph. Despite being faster, this new train is touted to be more energy efficient and emits less noise, making it a no-brainer to replace existing trains. It will take around 18 months or so for the design to be finalized before manufacturing and sales start.
