We’ve previously covered about how bit-torrent downloading rates in the US have been going down, while the number of Netflix subscribers has been slowly rising. Well, it looks like we have more details to corroborate with the theory that Netflix is doing a good job of cutting down piracy.
According to a report released by Sandvine, a company that sells network management and measurement software to large ISPs, Netflix takes up more bandwidth than any other website or service in the whole of North America. And yes, any other service includes P2P file sharing. At peak times, Netflix accounts for 30% of all broadband traffic! Compare to P2P file sharing that only hits a peak of 18.8% this year – a drop from 19.2% in the fall of 2010.
With so many platforms that support the service, and high quality, HD movies being streamed through the service, it’s no surprise that Netflix is so popular. Not to mention its large selection of movies that is constantly being updated. It looks like an affordable and useful service is the key to providing Americans with an alternative to piracy. Perhaps the government should pick up some cues from Netflix if they want to crackdown on illegal downloading.

Producing some of the best LED displays around especially in the TV market and in smartphones (Super AMOLED displays anyone?) Samsung is no stranger when it comes to LEDs. It looks like they’re tired of conquering the LED display market, and have their sights set on new consumer electronics ? LED lighting solutions.
The Korean company has announced that starting today; it will be making its first LED lamps available in the US. Samsung aims to push LED lighting solutions into the mainstream professional and consumer market to turn LED lamps from niche products into something popular. LED lights consume less power, last longer than regular light bulbs, and are pretty much superior in every other way. The only reason we haven’t seen a widespread adoption yet is because of its cost. But like with almost all technology – prices tend to drop with time.
Having proven themselves with high quality LEDs in their more advanced products, it’s always interesting to see a company go back to creating simpler creations. Whether or not Samsung will be successful, it’s hard to say but this should be a breather from the never-ending smartphone race littered with lawsuits from competitors. How many of you have started replacing your fluorescent light bulbs at home with LED variants?

For those of you familiar with the game show “Hole In The Wall” where people become human Tetris pieces to fit into a hole in a wall that’s moving towards them? Well, it looks like Microsoft is attempting to translate the game to the Xbox 360 with the help of the Kinect. The folks over at Game Set Watch recently spotted the title “Hole In The Wall” in the German USK rating board. The game will be published by Microsoft and will be arriving on Xbox Live Arcade as a Kinect title.
While it wasn’t mentioned how Microsoft would be recreating the experience, it isn’t hard to think of how the Kinect would be used in this game ? a motion controller that can detect human shapes hooked up to an Xbox 360 is pretty much self-explanatory for a game like this. Granted, it would be more fun to take part in the real game, but I guess since you can’t afford to build a moving wall in your home, the Kinect version will do. Hit the break to see what Hole In The Wall/Human Tetris looks like:

Dragontape has just announced the launch of the Dragontape app for the iPad. This app lets users create a “mixtape” of their favorite video clips and songs found online. Instead of sharing videos by clicking on a video and then huddling around the iPad with your friends while it loads, Dragontape lets you compile all your favorite video and music into a single mixtape for easy viewing.
Dragontape also gives users the ability to cut, edit, fade, parts of the files for smoother transitions in between different videos. That way, you can also skip the boring introductions and jump straight to the best parts. No downloads or uploads are necessary ? everything is online. Speaking of which, your Dragontape mixtapes can be shared online with all your friends as well. And if they feel like it, they can collaborate with you on improving the mixtape by giving you a hand with the editing.
Dragontape is currently in beta and you can download it for free for from the App Store for a limited time period. Head over to the Dragontape website to watch some mixtapes or find out more information.

According to reports, Nintendo and Best Buy have struck a deal to turn Best Buy stores into places for folks with the 3DS to hang out in. Starting this June, Best Buy will be offering free wireless access to 3DS owners inside 1,000 of their stores. Through the console’s SpotPass feature, 3DS owners will be able to take advantage of the free WiFi to download movie trailers, gaming extras and exclusive offers.
Besides letting 3DS owners have fun while inside Best Buy shops, this move will also let potential customers try out the 3DS firsthand in order to experience everything it offers. Sales of the 3DS haven’t been doing too well in the US and this new partnership will hopefully help Nintendo push out truckloads of units to consumers.
What do you think of this team up? Will it help generate a significant boost in sales of the 3DS? Or do you think that people are holding out on buying one now because of the lack of games?

A new Samsung Android smartphone codenamed “Hercules” has recently surfaced in the rumor mills of This Is My Next. And judging by its specs alone, it seems fitting to be named after the Greek demigod. The phone will be a high-end device and will support Category 6 HSDPA (42Mbps) and Category 6 HSUPA (5.76Mbps) for blazing fast data over HSPA+.
The phone will pack a 4.5″ 480 x 800 Super AMOLED Plus display (similar to the Infuse 4G), Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) out of the box, a dual-core Qualcomm 1.2GHz APQ8060 SoC, NFC support, AWS plus 850/1900MHz compatibility that will let it work on both AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks in the event the merger goes through, a thickness of 0.37″, 16GB internal ROM, 1GB of RAM, and a microSD card slot (supports up to 32GB), an 8megapixel rear camera with flash and 1080p video capture, and a Micro USB port.
The phone is said to arrive on T-Mobile mid-August, and will have a price point of over $350. Sounds like an awesome phone to have. Though let’s wait for more details before we pass any judgment on the device. Any takers?

Add to myYahoo!Ever dream of a mid tower case that had four hot swap internal SATA drive bays that you could access easily? Of course the case would have to have plenty of fans for cooling, and a pass thru ventilation design for the PSU to reduce heating the internal components. And of course, you would want your mechanical drives to be noise isolated. It might also help if the case had a cool look with a back lit LED fan to kind of show it all off. Hey let's throw in water cooling holes just in case, and what would be nice is if the price was affordable. Perhaps less than a hundred bucks?
