HTC Incredible S launched in Asia

So the HTC Incredible S has already been launched – at least in Asia. It will be tied down to a carrier in Malaysia at least for March (DiGi), followed by an unlocked version from April onwards. According to a HTC exec, the earthquake in Japan will not affect the HTC Incredible S supply in the immediate future even though they obtain their Super LCD display from Sony who has shut down their plants in Japan due to the recent earthquake. It wasn’t mentioned, however, whether future supply lines will be disrupted or not.It can be quite safe to assume that the HTC Incredible S will not reach the sales figures of the iPhone 4, so demand for Super LCD displays may not be that high for the moment even in a limited supply environment despite all the logistical problems to boot.We do hope to snag a unit for review purposes, and all in all, the handset does look pretty good on paper and in real life, huge display and all. Check out our hands-on at Mobile World Congress last month for a clearer look. A picture gallery will be up shortly. Meanwhile, the argument between Super LCD and Super AMOLED goes on among fanboys…

iPad 2 and iPhone 4 could suffer from shortages

We know that the iPad 2′s launch in Japan will be delayed due to the recent earthquake and tsunami disasters, and with news of Toshiba closing down their LCD plant for a month and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical.also doing the same to one of their factories might just see the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 suffer from shortages. After all, it is widely believed that Mitsubishi is Apple’s main supplier of BT resin, where it is used in printed circuit boards. Toshiba, supplier of around 40% of global flash memory, will also definitely (negatively) impact Apple’s iPhone 4 supplies in the near term. Even if other parts manufacturers do not shut down their factories, logistics is still a nightmare for many, and will most probably result in supply problems for weeks to come – and some say even until the end of June. Nice to know that Apple does not put all of their eggs in a single basket by having several vendors.

Toshiba to shut down LCD assembly line in Japan
for a month

Toshiba has announced that they will be closing down their LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) assembly line for a month at the very least, and this has resulted in PC manufacturer Lenovo voicing their concerns that they are suffering from a parts shortage. Toshiba is also joined by Hitachi during a similar time period, and it is most likely that such a disruption to might result in a global supply shortage which in turn will dent corporate profits and economic growth across the board. Just how does Toshiba’s plant closure impact the world? For starters, that place supplies the mobile phone industry and auto makers navigation displays, comprising of around 5% of the global small LCD display market. Take your time, Toshiba – lives are more important than making sure everyone has got their LCD fix.

Ericsson kickstarts industrys first HD voice call
on CDMA

Ericsson has recently made the first HD voice call on CDMA in the industry, calling it CDMA HD voice that delivers speech in a wider spectral range of 50Hz to 7000Hz. What do these figures mean for the end user? Well, we are talking about increased voice quality and intelligibility coupled with a decrease in listening fatigue, despite having you being in environments with high background noise. Here is what a top executive over at Ericsson has to say about their latest development, which we hopefully will see implemented in the market in the near future.

?We have demonstrated the first high-definition CDMA voice call in the world over an Ericsson network utilizing the new EVRC-NW 3GPP2 standard codec and ensuring interoperability with existing functionality while easing the rollout of future wideband services. This is the starting point of a voice quality revolution that will significantly enhance CDMA networks as we know them today.?

Fog and projectors used to create 3D
multi-viewpoint display

3D rabbit fog

A research group from Osaka University in Japan recently demonstrated a display that can be used to show 3D images with the usage of fog and multiple projectors. The projectors are set up in different angles around a fog screen, and each one projects a different viewpoint of the same object onto the fog. This allows users to view the image from multiple viewpoints, as if it was a 3D object, as they move around the fog. Even though the technology the students used can be further improved (more projectors and fog can be used), what they’ve managed to accomplish so far is pretty impressive. They hope to apply the usage of such technology to healthcare and entertainment in the future. Watch a video of the system in action after the break:

Songs can be used to hack cars

Car hackerSome researchers studying the different methods on how to gain access to computer systems featured in modern cars have discovered that it is possible to hijack a car through its stereo ? by letting the CD player read a song infected with a Trojan horse. While users listen to Trojan-infected songs, the malicious software can rewrite the firmware of the car’s stereo system to give hackers a way to access the vehicle. The scary part is that something as innocuous as a song could be used to trigger such events. And let’s not forget how easily songs can be shared and spread across file-sharing networks on the internet.
