Crackle streams free movies to your Android
device

CrackleWant to stream movies onto your phone but don’t feel like paying money for Netflix or any similar service? How about the option of watching blockbuster movies and TV series without getting into trouble with the law? Say hello to Crackle, the ad-supported video on demand streaming service. Functioning pretty much just like any other video on demand service, Crackle lets users watch their favorite TV Shows and movies legally, on their mobile devices, anytime, and anywhere they want.

However there’s a catch: adverts. Ads will be shown before a show starts, after a show starts, and in between as well. Fortunately they don’t last very long, but they do somewhat interrupt the whole movie watching process. It takes away the immersiveness of the whole show. But hey ? it is free after all, and you’re not forced to use Crackle. You still have the option of using other services if you’re unhappy with the usage of ads.

Head over to the Android Market now to download Crackle for your Android phone to give it a shot.

Batmobile: now hydrogen-powered

Batmobile

Everybody’s going green these days, and it seems that even the caped crusader is too. DC Comics recently commissioned an ex Formula 1 car designer Gordon Murray to come up with a new Batmobile for the Batman Live stage show. The result? An environmental-friendly Batmobile that runs on Hydrogen (if you look past the afterburner that you don’t have to use all the time?)

Gordon Murray decided to go for the more realistic approach with the design of the vehicle, applying his knowledge of F1 cars to create a vehicle that looks like it could work in the real world? except for the virtual wheels the car is supposed to have. Other features include: front-mounted lasers, sonar, and loads of LEDs to impress people.

Hit the break to watch a video demonstration of the  Batmobile or if you’re in Europe/UK, you can check it out live if the Batman Live show comes to your part of town.

Facebook Spartan: No-one knows what it is, but
everyone is excited

spartan

They got the glory, but in the end, they all died

Facebook is reportedly working on a top-secret project codenamed “Spartan”. It is said to be a mobile platform that runs in a web browser, thanks to HTML5 support. Because thin news is often like storytelling, an epic battle was needed and pundits are already saying that this could spell the end of the Apple AppStore and the beginning of a new era in which Facebook would dominate the mobile world (again?). Can this be true, and what does it mean to developers and end-users like you and I?

Razer Hydra comes with Portal 2 DLC (updated)

Razer Hydra Portal 2

If you’re a fan of Portal 2 and you’re thinking of buying the Razer Hydra motion controller – you’re in for a treat: the $140 controller comes with downloadable content (DLC) for Portal 2. The Portal 2 DLC contains six brand new chambers for you to find a way out from, using your brand new Razer Hydra.

The Razer Hydra is a special gaming controller that is comprised of two control sticks and a magnetic sensor.  The new maps have been specifically designed to work with it and in the event you’re finished with Portal 2, the Hydra works with 125 other games as well, so you’ll still have use for it. With the Hydra controller, users can pick up, stretch, and rotate items. Watch the video after the break for a better idea of how it works, it’s actually pretty amazing. But is it worth the $140? What’s the most expensive downloadable content (DLC) that you’ve ever spent your money on? $20? $50? How about $140? Valve software has just released some new DLC for Portal 2 that costs a whopping $140. But for a very good reason. In addition to the six new chambers included with the map pack, it comes bundled with the Razer Hydra controller.

Kinect SDK used to create Twitter client

Kinect Twitter client

The Official Kinect SDK was only released yesterday and it looks like folks have already started getting busy with it. James Pfaff, an intern at Microsoft came up with a simple Twitter client for the Kinect. He used hand gestures to select the characters, and voice commands to add spaces, confirm and delete characters. Judging by the video demonstration it doesn’t look like the fastest or most efficient way to send out a Tweet, and some of you might be thinking ? if he can get it to recognize voice commands, why not make it recognize alphabets being spoken instead? Maybe if he made the whole client completely gesture based, it would make sense as an alternative client for people who wanted to Tweet but couldn’t speak.

Anyway, this client should mark the beginning of things to come ? expect even more homebrewed Kinect projects in the coming months. Watch the video demonstration after the break:

Spotify rumored to launch this July

Spotify

We previously reported that Spotify managed to get three out of the four major labels onboard with its music streaming service and judging by what Spotify’s general manager, Jonathan Forster, recently announced in an advertising conference ? we could be seeing the service in the US very soon. According to Forster, Spotify is wrapping up the final licensing deals for its US launch. While he wasn’t specific about a release date, he did say something interesting though:

“We won’t launch before July 5th.”

Now this doesn’t mean that we’ll be seeing Spotify on July 6th, but it does feel like the release of Spotify isn’t too far away. With no other music streaming service capable of competing against Apple’s iCloud service, it makes sense for record labels to want Spotify to make its debut in the US. After all, I’m pretty sure they don’t want one service to monopolize the whole market either. Well we’ve already passed mid June, let’s see what July has in store for us.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 devices released in Europe
first

Nokia WP7

Folks in the US might be in for a disappointment if the following rumors turn out to be true. According to some reports online, the vice president of Nokia Europe mentioned that Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 devices will be released in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK first; later this year. However, a Nokia spokeswoman, Anna Martin, refused to confirm his comments about the release of the first Nokia WP7 phones.

If this is true, that means US consumers won’t be the first to get their hands on Nokia WP7 phones ? which is understandable, given Nokia’s presence in Europe compared to the US, but it’s quite odd that the phone won’t be launched in Finland, Nokia’s home country. This could mean that the VP forgot to mention Finland, or Finland is not part of the launch. But regardless of where they launch first, I’m sure everybody is just looking forward to find out what the new WP7 phones will be like.
