The Flexible Display Center and Universal Display Corporation has just announced that they managed to fabricate the first full-color, flexible AMOLED display prototype in the world with success, thanks to their own bond/de-bond manufacturing process. Of course, that isn’t the only “secret ingredient” in this technological recipe, where it will work in tandem with Universal Display’s full-color, top-emission phosphorescent OLED technology and materials. The displays will also utilize Universal Display’s patented, proprietary single-layer encapsulation technology in order to seal the OLEDs that are manufactured on DuPont Teijin Films Teonex polyester film. More on the prototype’s details in the extended post.
The prototype will measure 3.8″ across diagonally, and being a flexible display, it offers a QVGA resolution (320 x 240 pixels) that won’t wow anyone, but since it is flexible, this is a good enough start. Do you prefer this or the foldable Super AMOLED Plus display instead?

Some updates in the Chrome OS code as well as forums before Google I/O happened recently pointed towards the imminent release of a new version, and with the recent unveiling of Chromebooks to the masses (although they aren’t ready yet to ship since the first orders will start heading out at around June 15th), it does seem that this time window is there as Chrome OS still required some polishing work – after all, why release something that needs fixing right away? The latest update today makes the nudge to a final release even closer as Google Chrome OS 12 has arrived in beta.

Don’t you just love juicy rumors? Well, Nokia hasn’t been rocking its way at the top for quite some time now no thanks to a variety of factors such as complacency, the rise of Android, BlackBerry and iOS devices, as well as a shift in sentiment to something different. With Nokia looking to Microsoft for an operating system understanding in the future for new handsets, word on the street has it that things are much worse off for Nokia than what we originally thought – it seems that Microsoft is looking into the purchase of Nokia’s phone business.

The recent earthquake and nuclear disaster that followed in Japan had been quite a blow to the country (and the world, of course), with plenty of logistics and emergency evacuations being performed. How else are people supposed to keep in touch in real time apart from cell phones? Twitter has proved to be “an excellent system” according to doctors when it comes to communicating with chronically-ill patients.
Japanese doctors claim in The Lancet that social networking sites have been vital when it comes to notifying patients on just where to get their medication – which could end up as a life or death affair. Never mind that telephone networks were disrupted after the earthquake, Internet access was still reliable, hence the use of Twitter and such similar services.

One of the key features of Google’s latest update for Gingerbread on the Nexus S was the ability to hold native video calls through the Gtalk client. Judging from the latest reports ? only users who use the app over WiFi can take part in video calls. Apparently T-Mobile has decided to block all 3G video calls from happening, and has made it available only WiFi.
You might be thinking to yourself, “What?” The company that once mocked AT&T and the iPhone 4 for only being able to FaceTime over WiFi is now the very company that enforces it? The irony. Folks on Sprint with their Nexus S 4G phones aren’t facing such problems, but it looks like their circle of webcam Gtalk video friends over 3G has now grown smaller.
Granted, there are other apps that let you video call over 3G without any restrictions, but Gtalk is an app that comes preloaded on the device, it is the essential IM-client on Android phones and T-Mobile has got the nerve to gimp it. People aren’t going to be very happy when they find out. Oh well, at least T-Mobile customers get their free WiFi calls again.

Some researchers over at the Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania and California Institute of Technology/Jet Propulsion Laboratory are developing a new way to map out building interiors quickly and accurately; by using tiny, swarming robots. Similar to the concept of the Jollbots used for exploring Mars, by having many tiny robots, more areas can be covered at the same time, while the robots would also be able to get into hard to reach places.

A week ago we reported that T-Mobile was bringing back free WiFi calling to its customers. Today, Kineto Wireless sent out a newsletter that confirmed the service was returning. And the folks over at Giga Om reached out to T-Mobile and received a response from its representative saying:
T-Mobile is excited to expand our Wi-Fi Calling feature, a unique and valuable service T-Mobile has been offering customers for over three years. Starting today, T-Mobile customers can add Free Wi-Fi Calling to their rate plan ? at no additional charge ? to place calls over Wi-Fi without deducting from their allotment of minutes. We all know how much fun it is to stick objects under a microscope, but those things cost a lot and they aren’t exactly child-friendly. But if you have a young scientist at home who is keen on studying small objects, it’s better to look for an alternative solution. We’ve covered alternative microscopes in the past, i.e. the iPhone microscope, but what if you don’t have an iPhone around the house or you can’t trust your kid with an iPhone yet?

Add to myYahoo!Samsung has announced plans to release an operating system upgrade for its Galaxy S, bringing it up to the latest version of the Android OS for smartphones.
