Apple to release OS X Mountain Lion on the 25th
of July

Apple has stated that OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 will be launched in July, although they were rather vague when it came to a specific date which we presume was subject to change depending on how well the preview went. However the folks at 9to5 Mac are claiming to have heard whispers that Apple Stores in both the US and overseas are planning overnight shifts for Tuesday, the 24th of July, leading them to speculate that this could lead to a public launch on the 25th of July. Given that the golden master release of OS X Mountain Lion was released last week, it?s not a stretch of the imagination to think that the 25th of July could very well be the public release date (although rumors have also suggested at 19th of July release). The upgrade will cost $19.99 and will be available for purchase via the Mac App Store on launch day itself. So, anyone looking forward to OS X Mountain Lion?

Verizon to release update to unlock the Galaxy
S3s bootloader

When the Samsung Galaxy S3 was launched on Verizon, much to the annoyance of many Android users, the bootloader of the device was locked. This pretty much hindered the efforts of developers and modders alike, and Samsung has attempted to rectify this by releasing a developer?s edition of the phone for a whopping $599. Naturally this is a price not many are willing to pay for the sake of modifying their phones but the good news is that Samsung/Verizon have decided to change their stance in response to customer queries. Fujifilm sues Motorola Mobility over alleged
patent infringements

Motorola Mobility logoIn an industry where patent lawsuits are becoming more frequent, Fujifilm Japan has sued Motorola Mobility for alleged patent infringements ? four to be exact, related to digital camera and photography technology (i.e. facial detection, converting colored images into monochrome, etc). Fujifilm claims that they reached out to Motorola Mobility back in 2011 and attempted to reach licensing deals, but these apparently fell through and Motorola Mobility continued with the alleged infringement which prompted this lawsuit. Among the devices that supposedly infringed upon these patents include the Droid X, RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Droid Bionic and the Xoom tablet among others. No word on how much Fujifilm is seeking in terms of damages. If you speak the language of ?legalese?, you might be interested in checking out the lawsuit in its entirety here. No word from Motorola on how they are planning to respond to these claims.

Rockstar releases Grand Theft Auto 5 screenshots

Rockstar has been pretty evasive and quiet when it comes to Grand Theft Auto 5, but in the latest set of Q&As, the company has released a couple of screenshots from the game, giving us a glimpse of the game which they are calling their ?biggest open world game to date?. Unfortunately apart from those screenshots (with more promised to be on the way), not much else was revealed about the game. Naturally the lack of information is frustrating for fans and has spawned a lot of rumors and speculation, which Rockstar had this to say: (more…)

Microsofts SwordFight project lets you duel with
your phones

video details and more

There are apps for our smartphones that takes advantage of the built-in gyroscopes and accelerometers to simulate light sabers, whereby swinging our phone about could simulate light saber buzzing sounds and clashing effects. If you ever thought that would make a great game, Microsoft is reportedly working on a project dubbed SwordFight. Utilizing a technology called FAR, this allows phones to detecteach other by how long it takes from the sound from one phone takes to travel to the microphone of the other. Points are scored by bringing your ?sword? within 15cm of your opponent?s. Unfortunately there are no plans to release SwordFight to the public at the moment, but if you?d like to check it out, you can watch the video above or head over to Microsoft?s website for more details.

Microsoft Surface smartphone concept looks pretty
good

When Microsoft unveiled their very own Surface Windows 8 tablet, many had started speculating that Microsoft could eventually start making their own Surface phones as well. This was unfortunately denied by Microsoft, which was kind of a pity given that the Surface is a pretty nicely designed tablet with what appears to be good quality materials. However this has not stopped some from coming up with some concepts of what a Surface phone from Microsoft could look like. Pictured above is such a concept, courtesy of Jonas Daehnert, and we have to admit it looks pretty sleek and is most definitely a phone we wouldn?t mind getting our hands on! Daehnert did not state specifically what sort of specs we could be looking at, but did mention it should be along the lines of a quad-core device with 2GB of RAM, 32-64GB of storage, a 1280×768 display, a 16MPx Full HD camera and ?so on?. Higher-res photos can be found on his deviantART page, so pop on over if you?re curious. So, who would buy this phone if it became a reality? I know I would!

Nexus Q gets CyanogenMod 9

While most of us were wondering why didn’t Google just make the Nexus Q a full-blown Android device, developer Jason Parker decided to do something about it instead. He managed to install CyanogenMod 9 onto the Nexus Q turning it into an impressive little sphere. However, as usual with most initial builds of Android custom ROMs, not everything is fully functional at the moment. Bluetooth and WiFi seem to be working, so that should be good enough for some people. Though there’s some issues such as sound not working properly yet. Check out the video demonstration above to see it in action. How many of you own a Nexus Q, and what do you use it for?

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean keyboard available for
download on Android 4.0.3 devices

If you own the Amazon Kindle Fire, you?re probably aware that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has been ported onto your tablet via a ROM, albeit in beta form. However if you don?t own the Kindle Fire but you?re looking to get in on the Jelly Bean action anyway, you?re sort of in luck as the Jelly Bean built-in keyboard has been extracted and is currently available as a download via the Google Play store. Unfortunately it appears to be available only for devices running Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and higher, so if you?re running on a lower version of Android, you?re out of luck (for now).

While we have yet to have a go at the Jelly Bean keyboard ourselves, it has been reported that while it does look similar to its ICS predecessor, Android 4.1?s built-in keyboard is expected to be much better at prediction and should be very welcome by those who type frequently on their mobile devices. However it should be noted that this port is currently in its beta stages and there are limitations to it, such as English being the only language supported at the moment. However if you?d like to give it go anyway, pop on over to the Google Play Store for the download.
