YouTube now used more often as a reliable source
for news [Research]

Do you find yourself relying on YouTube too much for news? Before you condemn yourself as a self-confessed YouTube junkie, it seems that you’re not the only one addicted to the video-sharing website. According to a report published on Monday by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, more and more viewers are now turning to YouTube for eyewitness videos, especially in times of major events and natural disasters. The report was based on a 15-month research and it revealed that events, such as the Japanese tsunami last year and the turmoil in the Middle East, were among the most-watched videos.

While the research revealed that news on television still holds the record for viewership, YouTube’s growing digital environment especially in the area of journalism is even more interesting. “There’s a new form of video journalism on this platform,” said Amy Mitchell, Deputy Director of the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. “It’s a form in which the relationship between news organizations and citizens is more dynamic and more multiverse than we’ve seen in most other platforms before.”

Facebook post the undoing of 16 year old in
Chicago murder case

You find all sorts of crazy stuff on social networks these days, where a recent fatal murder of a West Rogers Park man aged 62 was recorded on video, and subsequently, posted to Facebook. Apparently, the video of the incident was recorded on a teenager’s cellphone camera, at least according to officials in charge of investigations. Malik Jones, 16, from Chicago, was charged over the weekend with first-degree murder for the death of Delfino Mora, and he was held without bail by Cook County Circuit Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr.

Mora was a father of a dozen children, and he was collecting the cans in order to earn some money so that his family would be able to have a decent chance at life. It seemed that 15 years ago, an injury sustained by Mora left him unable to continue in his vocation as a construction worker, hence leading him to perform odd jobs here and there. It is rather weird for the video of the assault to be posted onto Facebook – it was as though mocking the long arm of the law’s reach which eventually grabbed Malik by the collar anyway. I hope that justice will be served in court, and this is one instance where Facebook is able to help local authorities in solving a crime.

Clog-free ink jet printer inspired by human eye

Science has always been inspired by nature, just take a look at how flight was invented after meticulous studies on a bird’s wing structure and what not. Well, ink jet printers can be said to be the most popular kind of printers in the world compared to the more expensive laser brethren, but one problem that has plagued ink jet printers since time immemorial would be clogged printer nozzles that not only waste time but money as well, not to mention resulting in reduced print quality. The engineers at University of Missouri want to make things right by inventing a clog-preventing nozzle cover which was inspired by, of all things, the human eye.

Mimicking it, Jae Wan Kwon, associate professor in the College of Engineering, said, “The nozzle cover we invented was inspired by the human eye. The eye and an ink jet nozzle have a common problem: they must not be allowed to dry while, simultaneously, they must open. We used biomimicry, the imitation of nature, to solve human problems.”

A droplet of silicone oil seems to be the solution here, covering the opening of the nozzle when it is not in use, just like how a film of oil will maintain a thin layer of tears so that it will not evaporate off the eye. I wonder when will this particular invention make it to the mainstream consciousness as well as pervade future ink jet printers.

Slim PS3 spotted in the wild

More than a week ago, we realized that there is a slimmer PS3 in the works – the CECH-4000 model, and while not full frontal shots of the console were shown, it was only a matter of time. Today marks the first leaks of spy shots of the new, redesigned console from Sony, which was leaked by Brazilian website Tecnoblog. The photos that you see above do indicate that the slot-loading optical drive is no more, with the possibility that it has been replaced by a pop-up tray or sliding tray.

Located in front would be the pair of USB 2.0 ports that have not gone anywhere since they appeared on the original PS3, in addition to a removable 2.5-inch hard drive. When you flip the slim PS3 around, there is a solitary HDMI port that caters for all the High Definition goodness, an Ethernet port, a digital audio out (optical), AV multi-out and a power cable port. A trio of models were included in the leak, where they all sport different internal storage. The CECH-4011A, CECH-4011B and CECH-4011C will come with 16GB, 250GB and 500GB, respectively, according to the leak. 16GB does sound out of place, and 160GB would be a more comfortable figure.

Fiat 500L comes with Lavazza espresso coffee
machine

You know what they say – if you do feel sleepy at any time during your road trip, it is highly advisable that you pull over and get some rest. Alternatively, it does not hurt to get a caffeine jolt as well, with most of us choosing coffee as our poison of choice. Well, the Fiat 500L does have an interesting addition to its capabilities apart from getting you from point A to point B in relative comfort, with the inclusion of a Lavazza coffee-maker located right next to the gear-stick. This particular kit is even accompanied by a sugar container, a coffee pod dispenser and a spoon.

It does not matter whether the Fiat 500L that you own is a three- or five-door option, either ride will still be accompanied by the Lavazza espresso machine. You will still need to pull over to the side of the road in order to make a cup for yourself, as it might be dangerous to keep your eyes off the road just to see how the cup of coffee is being prepared while you drive.

Apple outs third iOS 6 beta to developers

Developers have received a third beta of iOS 6 from Apple, which is always a good thing – and this release has happened with ample time between now and the coming fall for developers to dive into and work out all the different nooks and crannies offered by this particular update. It is also the second major update for developers since June, coming just three weeks after Apple’s last version. It is said that there are plans for several more betas in the pipeline ahead of a release to the general public later this fall.

According to MacRumors, this particular third iOS 6 beta update will not be accompanied by a changes list, but that does not mean that nothing new is thrown into the mix. No sir, several discoveries from the previous beta do point towards an updated addition of the Smart Banner feature so that website owners are able to promote their iOS applications, in addition to toggling the new Shared Photo Streams feature on and off. If you are a developer for Apple, how are you taking to the third iOS 6 beta – like a fish to water?

Marvel unveils new armor for Iron Man 3

And of course, it wouldn’t be that exciting if Robert Downey, Jr. will not be the one to play the role of Tony Starks, a.k.a. billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist. Unfortunately, Marvel was too careful not to reveal too much about the new armor’s cool features. So, let?s watch and drool for now as we wait for more details. Some Facebook games no longer need permission to
access your details

Facebook PermissionIt looks like playing games on Facebook is going to be a simpler process in the future. According to reports online, there are a number of games now from big publishers such as Zynga that have games which don’t request for permission to access your basic profile information. These apps have a “Play Now” button and also means that users have one screen less to click when playing such games (which is supposedly a big deterrent for most people). While apps still don’t have unrestricted access to sensitive information like your email address or date of birth, let’s hope this new feature is only available to larger, more reputable developers who can be held accountable for their actions.

At the moment, this new feature is only available to a small amount of Facebook users, but you can expect it to everyone else in the near future. Read more at Facebook’s Help Center.
