It looks like rumors about the new Microsoft Office being unveiled today turned out to be true. Following the webcast (which we are covering on our live blog at the time of writing), Microsoft officially announced on its website its next-generation productivity suite. Firstly, it’s not going to be called Office 15 or Office 2013 – instead, Microsoft has decided to go with Office 365. While not a huge departure from previous incarnations of Office, the latest version has a bunch of new features to make it go hand-in-hand with Windows 8. What sort of features, you ask? Namely – a touch-friendly UI.
Finally, T-Mobile is confirming the coming of the Samsung Galaxy Note on its turf. Albeit things are a little too late over at T-Mobile, there’s no question that some customers are still craving for the 5.3-inch “phablet”. The carrier confirmed via Twitter saying,”We are excited to confirm the Samsung Galaxy Note will be coming to T-Mobile! More info to come.” And just as what you can expect from a tweet, merely 140 characters alone, the details were bleak.
Unfortunately, T-Mobile didn’t confirm the exact date of availability for the device. Word about a Samsung Galaxy Note on T-Mobile first surfaced last month. Since then, we’ve seen images leaked every now and then, with the latest ones revealed in a poster and on T-Mobile?s website. Still, it’s hard to get really excited about it, considering the new rumors that Samsung will be launching the next-generation Galaxy Note at the IFA 2012 in Berlin sometime in August.By Ubergizmo. For those of you who own the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G on T-Mobile, it looks like you won’t be left out of the Ice Cream Sandwich train. According to T-Mobile’s customer support page, the update to Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming in the future though there was no specific date revealed. However, folks with the phone should be receiving an update notification today that provides a number of useful fixes for the Android phone.
The list of fixes include: E911 issue over WiFi resolved, echo issues when on Hearing Aid Compatibility call, and an improved Proximity Sensor. As for the Ice Cream Sandwich update, let’s just hope Samsung doesn’t take too long. It’s been doing pretty well with rolling out the updates for other Galaxy S2 phones, so let’s hope this isn’t going to be a problem.By Ubergizmo. Albeit this isn’t really the first time for researchers to conduct tests on fruit flies, what we are about to tell you is almost mind-boggling. Geneticists from the Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada and the University of California were able to successfully breed fruit flies that have numerical skills. If you’re thinking about calculus or algebra, that seems to be rather far-fetched. Instead, the new breed of fruit flies can reportedly figure out the difference between two or more flashes of light during the series of tests conducted.
But it wasn’t easy. The geneticists had to breed more than 40 species before the evolution occurred. In case you’re wondering what’s the point of the research, the team believes that their study will help dyscalculia patients in the future. “The obvious next step is to see the how the fruit flies’ neuro-architecture has changed,” said Tristan Long of Canada’s Wilfrid Laurier University. Long added that their research is still a far cry from the team?s ultimate goal, citing that comparing the genetic make-up of the evolved fruit fly to that of a standard test fly has to be done.By Ubergizmo. Last week there was a rumor going on about Microsoft announcing its upcoming version of Office today (Office 15/Office 2013), and it looks like it might be spot on. According to reports online, Microsoft will be holding a webcast at 12 PM PDT where it will be announcing “news from Microsoft”. No information about the event has been released except that Steve Ballmer will be making an appearance so it should be some pretty important news, but thanks to a photograph posted on Weibo it looks like it’s going to be an Office-related event. The photograph (above) supposedly shows us the entrance to the event in San Francisco and more importantly, the new “Office” logo.
The webcast can be streamed from Microsoft’s website, so be sure to check it out at noon PT/3PM ET if you’re interested in what’s going on. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.By Ubergizmo. If you’ve seen the photograph above before, don’t worry – you’re not the only one. According to reports online, over a billion people have seen this photograph since it was published back in 2002. For those of you wondering where you’ve come across the image, it’s been part of Windows XP’s Luna theme that came default with a lot of computers. The photograph, entitled Bliss, was taken when former National Geographic photographer Charles O’Rear was at a rest stop driving through the wine region of Napa Valley in California.
The photograph was sold to Microsoft at an undisclosed “extraordinary” price, and you could say the rest is history. If you’re interested in checking out more of the photographer’s work, you can head here. Honestly I always thought Bliss was a digitally created image and not a photograph – I guess I was wrong.
