Galaxy Journal: Verizon and Sprints own Galaxy
Note

Galaxy Note AT&TThe Samsung Galaxy Note has been officially announced to arrive on AT&T later this year, but it looks like the massive phone/tablet hybrid could be arriving on other carriers as well. According to an industry analyst, the Galaxy Note will be released on Verizon and Sprint’s network in the first half of 2012. However, the device will be renamed to the Galaxy Journal instead ? not that many people will mind, just as long as they get their hands on the phone.

Since there’s no evidence to back up the analyst’s prediction, we’ll just take it as speculation in the time being. How many of you would like to see the Galaxy Note on a carrier other than AT&T, or are you not bothered about last year’s devices anymore?

Survey: 39% of US smartphone buyers gravitate
towards Android

The march of the smartphone is inevitable – eventually, featurephones will most probably occupy just a minority in the total market share, but at this moment in time, they still are the de facto mobile communication device of choice for developing countries. How about smartphones in the US? A recent survey showed that US smartphone adoption is tipped to hit the 175 million mark by the time 2015 rolls around, according to the Yankee Group. Its new report is titled, “The Runaway Smartphone Landscape,” where the Yankee Group did issue a cautionary note to those who want to enter the market that Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android will be the 800lbs giants to beat, while HP’s webOS, Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Nokia’s Symbian will be trailing far behind. I wonder whether Nokia’s recent push with newer models that are powered by the Windows Phone operating system will help haul Microsoft’s platform to the forefront. [Press Release]

Wearing headphones could dramatically shorten
your life!

Here’s a hat tip from a research that was recently published in the British journal Injury Prevention, where it was headed by Richard Lichenstein of the University of Maryland Hospital for Children in Baltimore. According to this research, there is a worrying trend that the number of US pedestrians who were killed or injured badly had tripled in a matter of half a dozen years – and the common denominator would be this – all the victims wore headphones.

The annual figure hit 47 last year compared to just 16 in 2004, which means over the last six years or so, the total number of deaths numbered at 116. Over half of the incidents involved pedestrians who were hit by trains – definitely not a good way to go, not to mention the kind of mess it creates after that. Gory. Just to prove that males are, once again, more carefree and prone to take risks in their youth, 67% of the victims were males who have yet to experience taste of how being in the 30s age bracket is like. Wearing headphones might cause “inattentional blindness”, where this distraction lowers the resources the brain devotes to external stimuli, and hence increasing the risk of being hit by a train or other vehicle. The study involved iPods, MP3 players and other musical devices, but did not include phones (smart or otherwise).

Two Sony Xperia phones leaked, are they the Nypon
and Kumquat

With Mobile World Congress just around the corner, you can be sure that Sony, having shed the “Ericsson” part for their smartphone range, has something up their sleeves – with the Xperia S (see our demo) being the most recent model to be announced at the recently concluded CES in Las Vegas. Two more Xperia smartphones have photobombed a group photo, where the larger model at the bottom should probably be the Xperia Nypon, which will be powered by a NovaThor U8500 chipset, sporting a 4″ qHD Reality display and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording capability. At first glance, it does resemble the Xperia S, although the specifications are noticeably different. Same phone for a different market, perhaps? (more…)

Steve Jobs action figure canceled

Do you remember the Steve Jobs action figure that stood tall at 12″, dressed up in his signature turtleneck sweater and pair of blue jeans? Since this is not an officially sanctioned action figure (Apple would probably have called it the iSteve if it were to be released), obviously Apple’s legal eagles did threaten the company behind this action figure, and the matter has finally been put to rest – where such an action figure would no longer be on sale. The company has scrapped plans even to honor pre-orders of the Steve Jobs action figure due to the ?immense pressure? from both Jobs’ family as well as Apple?s legal department. (more…)

Prototype Sony Ericsson Windows Phone spotted

Sony Ericsson Windows PhoneSony Ericsson has never officially announced its plans to create Windows Phone devices, but it looks like the company is doing some testing on the side, according to some photographs that recently surfaced. The folks over at Nokiawp.net managed to get their hands on some pictures of a Sony Ericsson phone running the Windows Phone operating system. The device is clearly labeled as a prototype device and still has “Ericsson” in its name so these could be pretty old photographs, so it’s likely that it’ll never see the light of day; and it looks a lot like the cancelled prototype from last year.

Nokia Lumia 900 headed to other carriers

Nokia Lumia 900The Nokia Lumia 900 was announced last week as an AT&T exclusive, but if rumors turn out to be true, it might be an exclusivity that doesn’t last for long. WinSupersite recently reported that the new Windows Phone device from Nokia will make its way to a rival carrier 45 days after the phone’s release. With the phone expected to arrive on March 18th, May 2nd is the speculated date we’ll see it on T-Mobile, Verizon or Sprint.

However, like all stories that haven’t been confirmed by an official source, we should take it with a pinch of salt and shouldn’t hold our breath. In the meantime, is anybody thinking of switching to an AT&T number just to pick up the Lumia 900 when it is released? Be sure to check out our coverage on the phone.

Google Sesame: an alternative way to login

Google logoWhile our phones are great for accessing Google services, nothing beats the experience of doing it on a desktop computer especially when you have to edit documents or spreadsheets in Google Docs. But what if you’re not at home and only have access to an untrusted, public computer that may or may not have keyloggers installed? Google has come up with a simple solution to the problem: a QR code-based login system.

All you have to do is head to the Google Sesame page, scan the QR code with your smartphone, access the website there and login on your phone. Once authenticated, you’ll be able to launch Gmail and any other Google service on the computer ? all without having to even type your own username or password on the untrusted computer! A pretty nifty trick for all those paranoid folks out there worried about using public computers.
