iPhone 5 claimed to be weeks away from
announcement

The iPhone 5 is just “weeks away” from being announced according to a tipster who recently leaked some details to the New York Times. The tipster claimed to be an Apple employee (who as usual, wished to remain anonymous) who wasn’t allowed to speak publicly for the company. In addition to leaking a vague announcement date, the alleged Apple employee gave some other details about the phone.

The tipster mentioned that the iPhone 5 will feature an 8-megapixel camera and a faster A5 dual-core processor but we all knew those upgrades were coming anyway. Other than that, there wasn’t any new information to be added to the rumor mill. Well, we’re already in the middle of September, and the iPhone 5 has been previously rumored to be announced this month and released next month so we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out. In the meantime, we’ll keep our eyes peeled.

Facebook Subscribe Button: Playing Catch-Up With
Google+

facebook subscribe-button

Facebook subscribe buttons have started to surface on Facebook. This is clearly a move that mimics Twitter, and Google+. That makes sense as the feature is actually useful and arguably “necessary” for Facebook if it wants to attract, or retain “star power” in its system. The truth is: most people won’t need or care to be a “broadcaster”, but “influential people” who have a large following in Twitter or Google+ will appreciate this new addition. Of course, their followers will probably welcome this Facebook upgrade.

Pantech Breakout spotted in the wild

Pantech Breakout
The Pantech Breakout was recently leaked in press shots a week ago, and today it looks like the phone has started arriving in stores. Expected to go on sale on September 22nd, the folks over at Droid-Life have managed to get their hands on some photographs showing the phone unboxed. Judging by its specs, the Pantech Breakout is expected to be the mid-range LTE device on Verizon’s network so don’t expect it to cost a fortune.

The phone will feature a single core 1GHz processor, a 4″ (800 x 480) display, a VGA front facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear camera, 512MB of RAM, 390 MB of internal storage, an SD card slot with 8GB preloaded (supports up to 32GB), Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and of course 4G LTE connectivity. With the ability to function as a hotspot for up to 10 devices, it’s actually not too bad. Expect more details very soon.

Samsung Overtakes Apple in Smartphone Sales
[Europe]

Galaxy-S2-iphone-4

According to IDC, Samsung has surpassed Apple in European smartphone sales by shipping 4.8 Million units, compared to Apple’s 4.6M units. Samsung had a strong momentum before, but clearly, the Samsung Galaxy S2 should get the credit for this (read our Samsung Galaxy S2 review). HTC stands at the third spot, and you can easily understand why every player is fighting with the gloves off: Apple sues Samsung, and HTC countersuing Apple while Google is arming HTC with patents.

RIM to cut PlayBook prices and release massive
update

blackberry-playbook-review--04
We all know that RIM hasn’t been doing too well, thanks to its recent Q2 financial report where it announced losses and the disappointing sales of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. RIM had only shipped out 200,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in Q2 ? a far cry from the 490,000 tablets that analysts expected the company to move out. Well, in order to turn the tablet into a success, the company is going to do what a lot of companies seem to be doing recently ? give it a price cut.

However RIM won’t be cutting the price of the tablet directly ? the discount will be given through incentive programs, rebates and deals. It wasn’t mentioned how much this discount will be but we should find out in due time. In addition to the announced price cut, RIM also mentioned that it will be releasing in October: a huge update to the PlayBook that brings all the long-awaited missing features to the tablet: a native e-mail, calendar and contacts app, the Android app player, and video store with 10,000 videos. We can’t wait.

No X86 Apps On ARM+Windows 8 (Duh)

Windows 8For some reason, part of the media world has awakened to the fact that Windows applications compiled for Intel’s X86 architecture, won’t work on ARM-based Windows 8 machines. First, I’m not sure where the idea that those apps would work came from, so is very much a “duh” moment.

Obviously it would “technically possible” to run X86 applications on ARM-based machines, but that would at the very least involve emulating an Intel CPU on an ARM one, but the ARM-based machines may already have their hands full running huge Windows applications like Outlook without any emulation, so you can only imagine what would happen if every single machine-code instruction had to be emulated… This just sounds like a terrible idea.

But it may not be as bad as it sounds. Most Windows Apps can be recompiled and tested and that would involve only a tiny fraction of work when compared to porting the app for a different environment. Most applications are very abstract from the processor anyway. The question is: will app developers take the time to do it?

My guess is that a lot of them will, if the Windows+ARM platform is getting a minimal traction. I may be wrong, but I don’t think that Microsoft has committed to porting its Office suite, but if they are serious about ARM systems, they will probably do so.

HTC Runnymede renamed to HTC Bass

HTC Bass
The HTC Runnymede has been leaked quite a bit over the past few weeks, with its specs and pictures turning up online for all to see. Well, now it looks like the phone has been completely revealed ? and just a few days before its rumored announcement at the upcoming HTC event too. The Android phone that packs a massive 4.7″ display (not to be confused with the WP7-running HTC TITAN) finally has its real name revealed (come on, who thought that HTC was going to release a phone named Runnymede anyway?) to be the HTC Bass.

Seeing how its counterpart, the HTC Rhythm (formerly known as HTC Bliss) is said to be announced at the same event as well, Bass makes more sense than Runnymede ? although it does break the R&R combo of the phone names. The phone was recently posted up on a UK online store which gave away the name of the phone but not its price and release date. The HTC Bass is expected to be unveiled on September 20th. Read up more about its specs.
